PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in theory of dynamics in quantum materials

Complex materials are governed by a variety of degrees of freedom, such as lattice, orbital, and spin. Recent progress in experimental techniques and novel large scale facilities open up the possibility to dynamically alter such degrees of freedom and stabilize quantum phases which are not present in the equilibrium. This poses challenging and exciting questions to our understanding of transient phenomena in materials. We are searching for 1-2 candidates for a PhD project, to investigate light-induced phenomena in materials, mainly mediated by collective excitations such as phonons, magnons, and molecular torsions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Concrete Structures

In the research project “Materials for the infrastructure of tomorrow”, we will integrate experimental characterisation and predictive modelling in 4D (3D+ time). The aim is to characterise and model the long-term performance of steel-reinforced concrete with cement largely replaced by natural pozzolans. We will study the carbonation process with related shrinkage and microcracking, influencing chloride ingress and in turn steel corrosion and crack development. Imaging instruments at large facilities will be strategically combined with lab-based experimental methods more readily available, for 4D monitoring of the life-cycle performance. Further, we will implement constitutive models in a multiphysics finite element analysis approach. The experimental imaging data will be used to populate image-based models at multiple scales. Carbonation with related shrinkage and microcracking will be modelled on micro-level, while the swelling effect of corrosion and subsequent cracking will be modelled on meso-level.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in mathematics for deep learning foundations

Deep learning is an incredibly successful machine learning technique in areas ranging from computer vision to natural language processing. However, despite its success, little is understood about the theoretical foundations of deep learning, impeding progress in applications and research alike. It is therefore imperative to develop an understanding of the mathematical structures underlying deep learning. The PhD project will address this from the point of view of group theory combined with insights from theoretical physics, building on recent advances in the highly active areas of geometric deep learning and neural tangent kernels. Possible further topics concern the geometries of data and of probability distributions as well as the application of deep learning to research in pure mathematics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in analysis of global value chains for local electricity systems

A transition from the 20th century electricity system, organised around centralised fuel-based power plants, to systems mainly relying on distributed solar and wind power, will demand deployment of a range of new energy conversion and storage technologies. An implication of this is that many of the geopolitical and environmental concerns once centred on fuel supply and combustion, now shifts to the entire value chain of these energy conversion and storage technologies. This shift increases the importance of life cycle assessment (LCA) as a tool for evaluating and comparing the environmental impact of different systems and technologies. The rising geopolitical tensions in the world, and the supply chain interruptions in the aftermath of the Covid pandemic, further demonstrate the importance of studying the spatial shape of evolving value chains. The overall aim of this project is to monitor, and analyse the implications of, the evolution and spatial distribution of the value chains underpinning novel energy storage and conversion technologies by compiling and evaluating datasets of global product flows. The results of the project is expected to inform technology developers and system planners about potential supply risks, environmental implications, and upcoming socio-political concerns. It may also contribute to the development of new analytical methods. The project is part of the Swedish Electricity Storage and Balancing Centre (SESBC) funded by the Swedish Energy Agency, Region Västra Götaland, industrial partners and Chalmers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Optimal usage of batteries by adaptive modelling and machine learning

The performance and lifetime of battery cells are to a large extent determined by how they are used, which is managed by a battery management system (BMS). At present, they act through more or less fixed constraints on measurable cell-external variables, i.e., current, voltage and temperature, to avoid accelerated aging and risk of thermal runaway. However, the decisive causes of the limitations are internal conditions that cannot be measured. Due to limited computing capacity and poor coupling between the simplistic battery models used and the cell-internal states, this normally results in an underutilization of the cells at the same time as they age prematurely. Previous theoretical studies have shown that a transition to the use of cell-internal constraints provides significant improvements (tens of percent in performance and longevity). The next generation BMS, with greatly improved computational capabilities, opens for use of both machine learning and more computationally demanding physically based models, with observers connecting the measurements to the critical internal conditions. In this project, you will derive such models, optimal control that uses them, and verify your results in experiments.

About Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden   –Official Website

Chalmers University of Technology  is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, natural sciences, architecture, mathematics, maritime and other management areas.
The university was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Swedish East India Company. He donated part of his fortune for the establishment of an “industrial school”. Chalmers was run as a private institution until 1937, when the institute became a state-owned university. In 1994, the school was incorporated as an aktiebolag under the control of the Swedish Government, the faculty and the Student Union. Chalmers is one of only three universities in Sweden which are named after a person, the other two being Karolinska Institutet and Linnaeus University.
