PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics, within the discipline of generation and characterization of magnetic nanocomposite materials

The aim of the project is to develop and combine techniques to produce new types of magnetic composites, consisting of aerosol-generated nanoparticles, and to use process techniques to control the spontaneous formation of 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional structures. Such structures could be very useful in applications in data storage, magnetic memory, magnetic cooling, and as building blocks of future magnets for green technologies. The main focus of the project will be the development of hard and soft magnetic nanoparticles composed of mixed metals, but the project will also include advanced characterization, both of the individual nanoparticles and of the larger composite structures. This will be done using electron microscopy, X-ray-based methods, and measurements of the magnetic properties of the materials using a magnetometer. Thus, in addition to advancing knowledge of new nanomaterials and aerosol nanoparticle formation, the graduate student will gain extensive experience in several important production and characterization methods for nanomaterials. We have a large network of international collaborators and temporary placement in industry, or another university may be part of the job description.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in neuroscience

Aging is associated with slow but persistent deterioration in cognitive ability, a process accelerated by neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s disease (AD). Aging is also associated with consistent alteration to organization of the brain’s functional network, which itself is associated with cognitive decline and which becomes abnormal in early stages of neurodegenerative diseases. Brain functional organization can be modified pharmacologically and through brain stimulation, raising the possibility that such interventions may eventually be used to halt cognitive decline if wielded properly. The PhD will use massive fMRI datasets to test the temporal interrelationships between changes in brain network organization across the human adult lifespan and across the AD spectrum. Genetic and lifestyle factors that accelerate or slow these temporal sequences will be interrogated. A special focus of the project will be to understand how functional changes in the medial temporal lobe, a brain region critical to memory and Alzheimer’s disease, influences and is influenced by global brain functional organization.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in quantitative biology

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is thought to be caused by pathological misfolding and aggregation of β-amyloid and tau proteins. However, very little is known about the molecular changes that precede this protein aggregation, nor what molecular cascades lead from protein aggregation to cell death. Furthermore, much of what we do know about such molecular activity comes from animal studies, which are imperfect models of AD lacking many disease features that occur in humans. Recently, several datasets of human tissue have become available measuring gene transcriptomics) at the cellular level in elderly people who died with and without AD. In conjunction with proteomic data collected from cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of healthy and cognitively impaired patients by our lab, these resources create an excellent dataset for probing molecular changes that precede, accompany and are precipitated by pathological protein aggregation in AD. This PhD project will use state-of-the-art disease modeling and statistical learning approaches to characterize the temporal landscape of the AD molecular cascade in humans. The project will involve modeling cell-specific molecular changes over the course of the disease, and will translate and monitor these changes in living, patients based on CSF proteomics

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Energy Sciences with focus on flexible power generation and cogeneration

The future renewable energy system will call for a flexible system approach with a plethora of different production means and energy storage to meet the demand for the security of supply and affordability. A large part will be non-dispatchable and therefore require replacement capacity. Today’s heat and power plants cannot decouple the electricity and heat production, hence a flexibility limitation coupled with the heat demand. This needs now to be decoupled. The first step in decoupling can be introducing a condensing tail with a suitable set of valves and a heat sink.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Inorganic Chemistry – Green and Sustainable Materials Chemistry

This research project focuses on the use of novel “green” solvents to find more sustainable but cost-effective routes from feedstock to functional materials. Deep eutectic solvents (DES) have recently emerged as promising replacements for toxic organic solvents but have high viscosities. Fluidising DES with liquid CO2 will reduce their viscosity but also change the solvent properties. This PhD will study the solvent structures and properties of DES + CO2 in two systems: (1) sugar-based DES for lignin extraction, functionalisation and processing, and (2) halide-free DES for manufacture of catalytically active metal oxide nanoparticles. We will investigate solubility and solution states of lignin and metal species in novel DES+CO2 mixtures to develop anti-solvent precipitation routes to generate particles from these species dissolved in DES+CO2.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden – Official Website

Lund University  is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.

Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.

Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.

The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
