PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Waviness and kinking in unidirectional composites-modelling
The aim of the project is to describe, to model and to simulate kinking-failure of long fiber-reinforced composites induced by the fiber-waviness. You will develop our understanding of the mechanisms behind kink-band failures induced by compressive forces. This knowledge is central for bearing capacity simulations of components made of fiber reinforced plastics. Major challenges relate to the fiber-waviness characterization depending on the composite manufacture, and how to properly represent the initiation/propagation of kink-bands in the most computationally efficient way. Inspired by “continuum damage” for the material degradation, micro-mechanically motivated FE-based approaches are to be explored. The simulations will be validated experimentally. Kink-band simulations are also used to optimize prototype composites with a tailored manufacturing process formulated in other work tasks of the network.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Machine Learning: Causality & Generalization
Generalization in machine learning refers to a trained system performing well on previously unseen examples. When analyzing and developing learning algorithms, unseen examples are often assumed to follow the same distribution as training examples. However, real data often follows different patterns: 1) The distribution of testing (in-deployment) examples often differs from those collected for training, 2) We often have access to different information or variables at training time than we do when the trained system is deployed, 3) The number of samples is rarely as large as we would like it to be. One example of this is classification of medical images using deep neural networks, where training sets are often limited in size but rich in annotations which are not available when the trained system is used.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Circular Logistics Services
The PhD student project focuses on the academic fields of freight transport, logistics and circular economy and aims to explore the challenges around logistics services that facilitate the transformation to circular economy and consequently circular supply chains. Today, organizations in sectors such as manufacturing, retailing and even services are declaring a strategic transition to circular economy. They introduce aggressive sustainability agendas and new circular business models which in turn put pressure on freight transport and logistics services. They set clear targets for becoming circular by transforming how they source, produce and deliver products and/or services. Such a transformation in the organizational strategy requires a similar change in supply chain design, structure and management which manifests itself in the form of circular supply chains in theory and in practice. However, for these circular supply chains to function successfully, logistics services need to become circular too.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Biological Nanoparticle Nanofluidic Scattering Microscopy
Nanofluidic Scattering Microscopy (NSM) is a novel microscopy method developed by the Langhammer group that enables the determination of size and mass of single biological nanoparticles and biomolecules in a completely label- and affinity-chemistry-free fashion (Nature Methods: DOI:10.1038/s41592-022-01491-6). It is the aim this PhD position to further develop and adapt the NSM method and the corresponding micro- and nanofluidic systems to enable single cell experiments and the analysis of secreted biological nanoparticles, such as exosomes, in the framework of a large research programme with the main aim of resolving the heterogeneity problem in exosome biology. This hetergeneity problem is the consequence of cells having evolved to release diverse subpopulations of exosomes, with diverse molecular and biophysical properties, and that this complexity has been difficult to resolve using existing experimental methodologies. In this context the project, which is a collaborative effort with the Esbjörner (coordinator) and Westerlund groups at Chalmers, the Volpe group at Gothenburg University and the El-Andaloussi group at the Karolinska Institute, will address the following key fundamental questions: (1) What exosome subtypes do cells release? (2) Where do they originate from? (3) What are their key enabling biochemical and biophysical characteristics?

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in diagnostics of PEM based devices: fuel cells and electrolysers
PEM fuel cells and electrolysers are attracting vast attention due to the key role that they can play in the decarbonization of many important sectors, such as industry, transport and heating. PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Modelling of Interfaces in Solar Cells and Tunnel Field-Effect Transistors
We are looking for a PhD student to work on electronic structure modeling of materials for solar devices. Searches for materials with specific properties are the bottlenecks of many emerging semiconductor technologies, such as quantum computing, electronics and solar energy conversion. Properties matching a desired function are key to the introduction of new technologies, but as development approaches final implementation, all components need to be tuned for a harmonious coexistence within a micro-device via doping, surface functionalization, nano-scale engineering, or other methods. From the point of view of first-principles modeling, a microdevice is a stack of functional layers (1, 2 or 3D, organic or inorganic), separated by interfaces – i.e. volumes within which the proximity or bonding between two neighboring materials influences the properties, and causes a deviation from the bulk state. The present project will focus on comprehensive modeling of various materials that are used in a solar cell, such as the photoabsorber (halide perovskite in particular), hole and electron transport layers, and their interfaces. Advanced electronic structure methods, hybrid functionals and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, as implemented in the ABINIT, QuantumEspresso or CP2K codes, will be used.

About Chalmers University of Technology, Gothenburg, Sweden –Official Website
Chalmers University of Technology is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, natural sciences, architecture, mathematics, maritime and other management areas.
The university was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Swedish East India Company. He donated part of his fortune for the establishment of an “industrial school”. Chalmers was run as a private institution until 1937, when the institute became a state-owned university. In 1994, the school was incorporated as an aktiebolag under the control of the Swedish Government, the faculty and the Student Union. Chalmers is one of only three universities in Sweden which are named after a person, the other two being Karolinska Institutet and Linnaeus University.
