(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

The aim of this 4-year project is to develop and optimize a reactor that utilizes magnetic fields for intensified CO2 capture and conversion. By employing time and spatially varying magnetic fields, materials with different functionalities and magnetic properties, are driven towards a specific spatial organization in the reactor, leading to an intensified CO2 conversion. This type of reactor is also referred to as a magnetic field assisted fluidized bed reactor (MAFB). The project will investigate the optimal magnetic fields and coil design required to achieve this behavior through a combination of experiments and computational modeling. You will work closely with fellow researchers who will model the reactor’s hydrodynamics, with inclusion of reaction kinetics. Moreover, they will obtain data by testing the experimental reactor in-situ to support the modelling results for the hydrodynamic and magnetic model.

Within the framework of a newly funded ERC Consolidator Grant (PASTIME project), we are seeking several motivated PhD students in biophysical modeling. The students will perform theoretical and computational research using simulations at the molecular scale. In the PASTIME project, we will search for methodologies to study the kinetics of drug transport. Since experiments often are too expensive or lack sufficient detail, molecular simulations can give insight in the dynamics of drug binding to proteins, or the permeation kinetics of those drug molecules through membranes. While such computational methodologies exist, new fundamental developments are needed to understand the ‘time’ aspects and to make the computations feasible with present-day computer power.

(09) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral fellow

The Research Group PProGRess/UGCT, is now looking for a highly-motivated applicant to fill a PhD position on conservation of building stones. Physical, chemical and biological weathering has a profound impact on the Earth’s landscape and on its building infrastructure. Rock and masonry are constantly damaged and disaggregated by chemical reactions, water infiltration and temperature changes. Strengthening efforts to protect and safeguard the world’s cultural and natural heritage is one of the United Nations’ Targets for Sustainable Cities and Communities in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Fluids are a major driver of rock weathering: they trigger, among others, dissolution, precipitation, frost and salt weathering. The key to manipulating weathering lies in understanding and controlling fluid flow within the internal pore structure of rocks and thereby influencing the related pore-scale processes. Within this PhD study new conservation techniques will be studied in order to contribute to stone conservation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

Heatwaves and droughts are becoming synchronized. In our warmer world, soils dry faster, heating up the air even further. These compound dry–hot events propagate like a wildfire: the drying upwind can trigger heat stress episodes on populations located hundreds of kilometers downwind. What are the physical mechanisms that drive these compound events and cause heat stress episodes on societies? Can we forecast these episodes weeks-to-months in advance using recent technological progress? Can intelligent land management attenuate the intensity and frequency of future events? HEAT will aim to answer these questions. This will be achieved through a combination of satellite data, physics-driven atmospheric models, artificial intelligence, and state-of-the-art climate model simulations. Altogether, HEAT will enhance preparedness and resilience against extreme hot and dry events by providing accurate seasonal forecasts, novel mechanistic understanding, and land management strategies to mitigate future events and their impact on societies.

AFireTest is a 1.5 million EUR project funded by the European Research Council (ERC). Over a total period of 5 years, 3 PhD researchers and 2 post-doc researchers will jointly develop the next generation of fire testing. Current fire testing is based on standardized tests which do not provide in depth understanding of material behavior and the impact of design choices on the fire risk in buildings. Within the new concept to fire testing (Adaptive Fire Testing), test specifications will be set with a specific goal of maximizing the net information gained from the test, taking into account (i) the current state of knowledge; (ii) the goal of the assessment (e.g., material understanding vs building risk evaluation); and (iii) the costs of performing the test (including environmental costs).

Personal Genomics is now becoming a reality, thanks to the steadily increasing availability of affordable sequencing technology. Despite the great promise of genomics for personal health and precision medicine, most institutions, as well as individuals, are hesitant to share genomic data. Principal reasons are the risk of unethical handling of the data, for example leading to higher insurance costs at the level of individuals. Hence, the build-up of trust for sharing this highly sensitive, identifiable personal information is critical, individually, nation-wide, and internationally.

Observational data is frequently used to draw causal inferences when a randomised trial is not feasible or ethical. The ‘target trial’ framework attempts to harness design principles from trials to improve the standard of observational epidemiology. Researchers are stimulated to first specify a hypothetical target trial, before trying to emulate it their data, in order to avoid common analytical pitfalls. The approach has helped to resolve conflicting results between observational and randomised studies in studying the effect of hormone therapy on coronary heart disease. It has been applied more recently to guide treatment strategies for antiviral therapy in HIV epidemiology and judge the effectiveness of Covid-19 vaccines.

About Ghent University, Belgium  –Official Website

Ghent University is a public research university located in Ghent, Belgium. It was established in 1817 by King William I of the Netherlands. After the Belgian revolution of 1830, the newly formed Belgian state began to administer the university. In 1930, the university became the first Dutch-speaking university in Belgium, whereas French had previously been the standard academic language in what was Université de Gand. In 1991, it was granted major autonomy and changed its name accordingly from State University of Ghent (Dutch: Rijksuniversiteit Gent, abbreviated as RUG) to its current designation.

In contrast to the Catholic University of Leuven or the Free University of Brussels, UGent considers itself a pluralist university in a special sense, i.e. not connected to any particular religion or political ideology. Its motto Inter Utrumque (‘In Between Both Extremes’), on the coat of arms, suggests the acquisition of wisdom and science comes only in an atmosphere of peace, when the institution is fully supported by the monarchy and fatherland.

Ghent University is one of the biggest Flemish universities, consisting of 44,000 students and 9,000 staff members. The University also supports the University Library and the University Hospital, which is one of the largest hospitals in Belgium. It is one of the greatest beneficiaries of funding from the Research Foundation – Flanders (FWO). Ghent University consistently rates among the top 100 universities in the world.
