PhD position summary/title: SNSF-funded PhD Position in Advanced In Vivo Imaging of Heterotopic Ossification
Heterotopic ossification (HO) is a very common and sometimes highly debilitating pathology characterized by the formation of mature bone in soft tissues. The underlying mechanisms are still poorly-understood and therapies to prevent and heal HO have a low efficiency. It is not uncommon that bone has to be removed surgically. This formation of bone in soft tissue is the result of an osteoinductive process during which stem cells are differentiated into bone cells. This property is essential to treat large bone defects. Currently, osteoinduction can be achieved by the implantation of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs), but the safety of BMP has been questioned. Another approach is to implant osteoinductive bone graft substitutes, but their potency is low, and the underlying mechanisms are still debated. Demonstrating that a low extracellular calcium concentration is key in triggering bone formation and having a better understanding of this process could open up new opportunities in the design of potent osteoinductive bone graft substitutes and the treatment of impaired bone healing.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Carbon dioxide removal technologies in deep mitigation pathways
Limiting global average temperature rise to below 1.5°C requires significant reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, ultimately to net-zero and even below net-zero. Achieving such steep reductions and sustaining negative emissions requires carbon dioxide removal (CDR) technologies. These findings were collected by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) based on findings from Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs). However, current integrated assessment models only poorly represent CDR technologies, limiting our understanding of the potential role of CDR.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Earthquake Seismology
Objectives: Aseismic processes can play a first-order role in the build-up to large earthquakes, but they are hard to detect and monitor. The strong recent advances in deep learning powered seismic monitoring is an opportunity to fundamentally improve the detection and characterisation of the subtle seismic signatures that aseismic processes leave behind. The doctoral candidate will i) develop new DL methods that are tailored to characterise the seismic signatures of aseismic slip during earthquake sequences, in particular stress migration and rotation, strain acceleration as captured by repeating earthquakes, and fluid pressure build-up as evidenced by seismic swarms; and ii) study the predictive value of aseismic observations for anticipating large earthquakes. We will use some of the recent, exceptionally well recorded earthquake sequences to constrain transient aseismic deformation, including deformation caused by underground fluid flow. From this observational basis we will be able to develop a mixture seismicity model that accounts for the observed triggering of earthquakes by both previous shocks and by aseismic transients. This will allow us to study how the total deformation is partitioned into seismic and aseismic contributions, in space and in time. The goal is to understand the physics of the hard-to-observe aseismic deformation, and to design a seismicity model that provides substantially improved probability gain, compared to state-of-the-art models.

PhD position summary/title: PhD for proxy development – lipid biomarkers
Currently, soils store a large fraction of the CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. However, whether they will continue to do so in the future is unclear, as soil fertility potentially limits the amount of primary production (carbon fixation) and belowground carbon storage. Current experimental approaches reveal a complex interaction between the above- and belowground ecosystem, and its chemical environment. A historical perspective, i.e. looking at past changes in soil fertility and carbon storage, can elucidate these processes on timescales that exceed experimental approaches (decades to millennia). While changes in atmospheric CO2 and climate are well constrained using a combination of direct measurements and estimates based on proxies, we currently have no methods to reconstruct soil fertility through time. In this project, you will develop biomarker lipid proxies that allow quantifying soil mineral fertility, building on current research that highlights the dependency of GDGT lipids on major soil exchangeable cations: free hydrogen, exchangeable calcium and exchangeable iron.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Researcher – Microplastics in Agricultural Soils: Runoff, Transport and Impacts
We aim to establish custom-built small-scale laboratory plots which will enable the simultaneous assessment of soil erosion and MPs and NPs movement through the soil profile, both vertically and laterally. These aspects will be assessed across a range of soil textures, slope, and rainfall intensities to understand how plot characteristics influence MPs and NPs transport. Using model particulate plastics that have previously been developed in-house containing trace metals will enable quantification of plastic particles throughout the experimental system. This approach offers several advantages, including being able to accurately and quickly quantify MPs and NPs in complex matrices by using the metal as a proxy for plastic using trace metals analysis techniques, such as ICP-MS. Consequently, we will be able to assess how effects on soil erosion and the transport of MPs and NPs varies with the properties of the size, morphology and polymer of the particles, soil texture and plot characteristics. The successful candidate will perform laboratory experiments to generate primary data to understand these processes but can also expand upon this work by developing fate and transport models if desired. The diverse nature of plastic research involving environmental science, analytical chemistry, and materials science will allow the successful candidate to perform multidisciplinary research.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in experimental fluid dynamics: cavitation bioeffects
Transdermal drug delivery, i.e., delivering drugs across a patient’s skin, can be facilitated via low-frequency ultrasound via the process known as sonophoresis, or sound-mediated improved permeabilisation of the skin. This allows for larger molecules such as peptides or proteins, which would otherwise struggle to passively diffuse across the skin, to reach the blood circulation thanks to sound-induced mechanical effects. Cavitation is generally suspected to be a major mechanism allowing for the localized, transient and reversible disruption of the outermost layer of the skin which typically represents the most difficult layer to penetrate. However, the exact contribution of cavitation and the distinct cavitation effects such as localised jetting and acoustic emissions in the process are currently unknown. This project aims at comprehensively quantifying and decoupling these physical effects in media relevant for transdermal drug delivery, such as polymer solutions and ionic liquids. The research addresses fundamental open questions in acoustic and cavitation properties of complex fluids and the associated physics, and systematically investigates cavitation effects involved in the acoustically mediated surface perforation through unique temporally and spatially resolved experiments at the micro-scale, coupled with theoretical and numerical modelling. The research leverages an international and interdisciplinary collaboration with biomaterials engineers with an expertise on skin biomechanics.
