PhD position summary/title: PhD positions in Quantum Nanophotonics

The positions are in the brand-new Quantum Photonics Laboratory (QPL). We are scientists, applied physicists, and engineers. We explore the flow of and interactions between light, sound, and microwaves. Today’s demand for computing and connectivity is on a steep trajectory. There is no reliable path to a sustainable growth in our capabilities to compute and connect. A key issue is the excessive energy loss caused by communication. In classical datacenters and computers, this energy loss leads to heating and greenhouse gas emissions. In emerging quantum processors, the energy loss prevents scaling up small quantum devices into more powerful distributed systems. We believe using light for communication is our only hope for solving this. To do so, we must convert microwave signals onto light. We are developing new hardware to this end. PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Tensor Networks for Quantum Dynamics and Quantum Algorithms

Both Quantum Computing and Quantum Communication are rapidly developing research fields. Quantum hardware is currently at a stage where it is demanding to make full-scale coherent simulations on classical computers. By reducing the amount of entanglement in the system, it is possible to simulate larger systems, e.g., using tensor network packages. In addition, we can use the same packages to model dynamics in quantum networks with time delays, which is relevant for large-scale quantum networks. Based on previous work, we aim progress significantly on at least one and preferably both applications.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Solid and Structural Mechanics

The goal of this project is to develop a method that can determine the maintenance and reinvestment efforts that minimize the Life Cycle Cost (LCC) of an individual S&C. The method is intended to consist of two parts. First, a Digital Twin that describes the physical condition of the S&C using a simulation model that is continuously updated with data from remote monitoring, in-track inspections, and inspection cars. The simulation model should also have the ability to predict future conditions. It is part of the project to determine the most suitable model type, and both physics-based and a combination of physics-based and data-driven modelling (machine learning) will be evaluated. The second part consists of a cost optimization where the S&C’s LCC is evaluated for different maintenance and reinvestment strategies using the Digital Twin.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Biological Nanoparticle Nanofluidic Scattering Microscopy

Nanofluidic Scattering Microscopy (NSM) is a novel microscopy method developed by the Langhammer group that enables the determination of size and mass of single biological nanoparticles and biomolecules in a completely label- and affinity-chemistry-free fashion (Nature Methods: DOI:10.1038/s41592-022-01491-6). It is the aim this PhD position to further develop and adapt the NSM method and the corresponding micro- and nanofluidic systems to enable single cell experiments and the analysis of secreted biological nanoparticles, such as exosomes, in the framework of a large research programme with the main aim of resolving the heterogeneity problem in exosome biology. This hetergeneity problem is the consequence of cells having evolved to release diverse subpopulations of exosomes, with diverse molecular and biophysical properties, and that this complexity has been difficult to resolve using existing experimental methodologies. In this context the project, which is a collaborative effort with the Esbjörner (coordinator) and Westerlund groups at Chalmers, the Volpe group at Gothenburg University and the El-Andaloussi group at the Karolinska Institute, will address the following key fundamental questions: (1) What exosome subtypes do cells release? (2) Where do they originate from? (3) What are their key enabling biochemical and biophysical characteristics?

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in single molecule analysis with nanopores

Our group works with chemically modified nanostructures for various applications. We are interested in developing a new kind of platform for trapping single or very few biological molecules. This will open up new possibilities for analyzing biomolecules and their function, which may ultimately lead to a better understanding of life on the molecular level. More specifically, we want to study the behavior of proteins. For instance, we believe that the methods we are developing can be used to gain new insights on oligomer formation among certain proteins that are associated with diseases such as neurodegenerative conditions (amyloid formation). By investigating how a very small number of molecules, confined in space to the nanoscale, interact with each other we may be able to understand better how and why toxic oligomers form.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Storage and flexibility for enhancement of grid capacity

A decrease in CO2 emissions is necessary to reduce the global warming. One component in this reduction is to reduce the use of fossil-based fuels in electricity generation and shift production towards renewable energy sources such as wind-power and solar-power. The shift to such sources comes with an additional challenge in the inherent variability of such energy sources as the level of possible production changes with meteorological factors beyond our control. A fundamental property for an electrical power system in a stationary operation is that the produced electric power must equal the electric power consumed in the loads. Uncontrollable variations in either load or production must hence be balanced by changes in other parts of the system. This project aims to study how this balancing can be accomplished from two perspectives. In the first perspective, we study how energy storage systems can be placed and dimensioned to obtain optimal reduction in variability. In the second, we study how the energy market mechanisms influence the loads to participate in balancing the variability of the renewable sources. The project is conducted within the competence centre “Swedish Electricity Storage and Balancing Centre” (SESBC) funded by Swedish Energy Agency and Swedish industry.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Microwave power amplifier circuit design for 6G radio networks

Telecommunication is one of the key enablers of our modern society. Wireless technology allows us to be connected to an abundance of information anytime, anyplace, to a degree that was unthinkable less than 20 years ago. Telecommunication will also play a key role in transforming our society further and help solve key issues like climate change. It enables smarter devices, connected factories and transport solutions that will be more energy efficient and will facilitate an increased use of renewable energy sources and de-centralized storage, e.g. in electric car batteries. In the last 30 years the focus of wireless research has shifted from making communications possible, to making it more spectrally efficient – i.e. squeezing higher data rates into the same amount of radio spectrum. While communication systems move to higher and higher frequencies, the available spectrum is ultimately limited and needs to be shared by many services.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position: Internationalised Higher Education and English-Medium Instruction

This PhD project evolves around the relationship between the teaching approaches of teachers working in English-medium instruction (EMI) and their level of English proficiency, a relationship that has never been studied empirically. Specifically, the project explores whether highly English-proficient EMI teachers are more prone to adopt a student-focused teaching approach whereas teachers with limited English proficiency are likelier to adopt a teacher-focused teaching approach. Set in Sweden, Hong Kong, and Brazil, (and involving the PhD-student in all three locations, directly and/or indirectly) this collaborative project relies on comparative education methodology (using surveys, self-assessment, language testing, and interviews) and will enhance our understanding of the role played by language in EMI. By mapping the English proficiency of teachers in different contexts of EMI, the English skills that contribute to effective teaching in EMI, and the need for language support for EMI teachers, this project can significantly impact research in multiple fields as well as EMI practice.
