PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in cybersecurity and care
As computers have become part of nearly every aspect of our lives, so too have the dangers of being hacked, harassed or attacked through technology. Yet security systems designed to prevent this are often so badly designed that they are disabled or ignored by users. Security systems can even exacerbate existing problems with technology – such as failing to support those who care for others, or by allowing those with shared access to abuse that access. Recent research has documented how security is a shared activity, often organised within homes or families. Those relationships often involve care relationships – such as between parents and children, or between the elderly and their care givers. Amongst the many responsibilities of carers, carers need to manage others’ digital resources – such as bank accounts and security information. This can be difficult when these services are designed for single user usage.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Formal Verification
Runtime monitoring is the task of identifying complex temporal patterns while incrementally processing streams of events. Tools that solve this task are called monitors. They input a temporal pattern specification, process the stream event-wise, and output verdicts that indicate for each event whether a pattern occurs at the event’s position in the stream. Some monitors use implicit specifications: they fix a particular temporal pattern and use a dedicated, optimized algorithm for the monitoring task. Other monitors support entire temporal pattern specification languages and input the specification explicitly as part of their workflow. The goal of this PhD project is to develop and compare monitors for both implicit specifications and explicit and expressive pattern specification languages that scale to high-volume and high-velocity data streams. Implicit monitors are always tied to an application area. As a specific application, we intend to use implicit monitors to assure the correctness of an interactive proof assistant—a tool that checks formal mathematical proofs—which carries out thousands of logical inferences in what appears to its users as a single automatic proof step.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Plant Ecology
Strong, ongoing warming in the Arctic is causing drastic changes on arctic vegetation and plant functionality, which can modify potential roles of the arctic ecosystems in the climate system. This amplified warming is expected to largely increase the frequency of heatwaves in this region. Under heatwaves, we expect a reduced plant uptake of CO2, but a large burst of stress volatile organic compounds (VOCs) as a plant defense mechanism. Meanwhile, plants can also acclimate to the warmer condition and might change stress responses to heatwaves depending on the preceding growth condition.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the Department of Biomedical Sciences Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences University of Copenhagen
Cardiac activation has long been thought to occur solely through conduction from cell to cell via gap junctions. However, many findings are at odds with the idea that gap junctions are the sole route of conduction. The aim of the project is to demonstrate a different mode of conduction, which involves changes in the extracellular potential. The investigations will primarily be performed using patch clamp, whole-heart Langendorff perfusion and electron microscopy. We aim to demonstrate whether cell-to-cell activation can occur independent of gap junctional coupling at the cellular and tissue level. A demonstration of electrical field coupling will have high impact on our fundamental understanding of cardiac electrophysiology. It will necessitate a revision of textbooks in human physiology and most importantly change the way we clinically address conduction in cardiac diseases.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Project in methane capture with cyclodextrins
Methane (CH4), a greenhouse gas that is ~86 times more potent than carbon dioxide (CO2) over a 20-year period, is produced on the megatonne scale annually by many industrial and agricultural processes. Capturing this environmentally damaging waste product is an attractive solution to the issue of atmospheric methane pollution. However, methane is an inherently stable molecule with a low polarizability and has a low affinity to other molecules – hence it is difficult to capture efficiently. Cyclic carbohydrates, socalled cyclodextrins, are however able to bind methane. The goal of the project is to find cyclodextrins with high affinity for methane so they can be used to capture this GHG. The Ph.d. fellow will design and synthesize new cyclodextrins derivatives and study their methane binding capabilities to gain insight into this important problem .

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Plant Nutrition
In the project, we want to study the processes controlling transport of plant nutrients contained in nanoparticles (NPs) across the plant tissue, which will enable us to produce next generation crop fertilizers that are more efficient, sustainable and climate friendly than current conventional fertilizers. We want to improve our understanding of how NPs interact with plant tissue at cellular level. Specifically, we want to study how NPs can be tailored to penetrate the cell wall and become internalized by plant cells. In the project, we take a mechanistic approach to gain an improved understanding on how these processes are controlled at the molecular and cellular level.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Respiratory Physiology at the Department Biomedical Sciences
One of the great unanswered questions within respiratory physiology is whether the COPD lung undergoes specific exercise training-induced adaptations or not. Currently, the dogma is that the lung is perhaps the only organ of the human body that does not such changes. In the present study, we will challenge this by examining various aspects of lung function with particular emphasis on pulmonary vascular function both during rest and exercise before and after an extended period (6 months) of regular supervised high-intensity interval training. The findings may both broaden our understanding of basic exercise physiology and will furthermore be of use in the design of rehabilitation programmes for patients with chronic lung diseases.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship at the Department of Political Science, University of Copenhagen (UCPH): The Future of Humanitarian Design
The recruited candidate will form part of the research project ‘The Future of Humanitarian Design (HUD)’. HUD is a four-year Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) funded project. HUD explores how emerging technologies, processes of aesthetic design, and engineering insights can be combined with knowledge from international relations to tackle the crisis facing humanitarianism. To do so, the project is constructed around a form of experimental action research in which International Relations scholars will collaboratively work alongside architects, engineers, and others to lead the co-design of three technological innovations designed to improve humanitarian practice and conditions. In this, the goal is to 1) explore how we might better integrate ‘high theoretical’ and ‘critical’ social scientific concepts and theories into the world of practice (humanitarian and beyond), 2) to see how social science can be more closely ‘bridged’ with engineering, architectural, and design practice and knowledge, and 3) therein, take up the urgent task – especially in the light of recent geopolitical events – of working collaboratively across the sciences to improve the conditions of some of the most vulnerable populations in the world.

About The University of Copenhagen, Denmark – Official Website
The University of Copenhagen is a public research university in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in 1479, the University of Copenhagen is the second-oldest university in Scandinavia, and ranks as one of the top universities in the Nordic countries and Europe.
Its establishment sanctioned by Pope Sixtus IV, the University of Copenhagen was founded by Christian I of Denmark as a Catholic teaching institution with a predominantly theological focus. In 1537, it was re-established by King Christian III as part of the Lutheran Reformation. Up until the 18th century, the university was primarily concerned with educating clergymen. Through various reforms in the 18th and 19th century, the University of Copenhagen was transformed into a modern, secular university, with science and the humanities replacing theology as the main subjects studied and taught.
The University of Copenhagen consists of six different faculties, with teaching taking place in its four distinct campuses, all situated in Copenhagen. The university operates 36 different departments and 122 separate research centres in Copenhagen, as well as a number of museums and botanical gardens in and outside the Danish capital. The University of Copenhagen also owns and operates multiple research stations around Denmark, with two additional ones located in Greenland. Additionally, The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the public hospitals of the Capital and Zealand Region of Denmark constitute the conglomerate Copenhagen University Hospital.
A number of prominent scientific theories and schools of thought are namesakes of the University of Copenhagen. The famous Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics was conceived at the Niels Bohr Institute, which is part of the university. The Department of Political Science birthed the Copenhagen School of Security Studies, which is also named after the university. Others include the Copenhagen School of Theology and the Copenhagen School of Linguistics.
