PhD position summary/title: PhD Researcher in Atmospheric Sciences – Deep convection dynamics
We are looking for an enthusiastic PhD student with a background on meteorology/atmospheric sciences for fundamental research on cloud dynamics in deep convective clouds above the Amazon rain forest. In this project, you will analyse observational data from the international aircraft field campaigns ACRIDICON-CHUVA and Cafe Brazil and will furthermore use numerical simulations using the Large Eddy Simulations (LES) code MicroHH. The aim of this project is to better understand the processes governing the characteristics of convective downdrafts, such as timing, location, strength, and their implications on the cloud dynamics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position Exploring the carrying capacity of low-trophic aquaculture in the North sea
The project is carried out by a consortium of Wageningen University, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), and others. Aim of the project is to develop knowledge on production systems and modelling at ecosystem level to enable the mussel and seaweed sectors to innovate their production technologies and farm organization, and to scale-up nature positive circular low-trophic aquaculture production in the North Sea. The consortium involved has a strong inter- and transdisciplinary focus and will consider the interrelation between economic and environmental outcomes, and will work, together with diverse user groups such as nature conservation, towards understanding of the carrying capacity of seaweed and mussel production in coastal and offshore environments.
Deadline : Mon 12 June 2023
(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD researcher – Designing sustainable waste conversion value chains using decision support models
The Operations Research and Logistics group of Wageningen University is hiring a PhD candidate to participate in a large national multi-disciplinary project (ReBBloCS) funded by the Dutch Enterprise Agency (RVO). The main goal of the ReBBloCS project is to maximize utilization and add value to what is currently considered waste for a number of industrial waste streams.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on machine learning-based prediction of protein-protein interactions
In the framework of the NWO-M2 project ‘Machine learning-based prediction of transcription factor protein-protein interactions’, two PhD candidates will collaborate to develop a robust computational method to predict protein-protein interactions of TFs with complex evolutionary histories. The method will be developed based on the MADS-domain transcription factor family, which regulates important plant processes such as flowering and fruit development. One of the PhD candidates will work in the Bioinformatics Group, the other PhD candidate in the Plant Developmental Systems group of the Laboratory for Molecular Biology to perform wet-lab experiments aiming to gain insight into the specific requirements for protein-protein interactions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Elucidating specificity determination in plant transcription factor complex formation
Biological processes are controlled by transcription factor proteins (TFs), which interact in many different combinations to regulate gene expression. However, it is still largely unclear how the specificity of protein-protein interactions is encoded in protein sequence and structure and how this determines which combinations of proteins with unique functions can be formed. Ultimately, this knowledge is important to steer and control biological processes, and investigate for example the cause of human diseases or govern modern plant breeding approaches.

(07) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral Candidate in urban greening and health, Marie Skłodwska-Curie Actions
The project will focus on the study of the relationships between objective health data and green area availability where people live, and on the health benefits that can be expected by greening residential neighbourhoods, to identify what type of nature reduces stress best in real-life settings. The goals of the project are to study the extent to which socioeconomic health disparities may be reduced by making optimal use of the stress-reducing qualities of contact with nature, and to study which types of nature are most effective in this regard for people with a low socioeconomic status.
Deadline : Mon 5 June 2023
(08) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Position for Reverse Stress testing
In the proposed research project, we aim to develop a reverse approach to tackling supply chain risks. This approach starts from the conditions under which a supply chain functions well, instead of the supply chain risks themselves. This approach is inspired by risk analysis approaches in the financial world that became common practice after the 2008 financial crisis. In this project, you will further outline and detail this approach using quantitative models and methods. You will collaborate with a variety of food companies that the ORL group has strong ties with, including food processing and retail.
