PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Reinforcement Learning for Control of Partially Observable Dynamical Systems

The control-oriented research at Linköping University concerns different topics such as sensor fusion, learning methods for control, and optimization. We are currently looking for a PhD student to conduct research on the intersection of reinforcement learning and control theory.

Project description: Reinforcement Learning (RL) provides an end-to-end framework to control dynamical systems, from sensory data to control input, and has shown astonishing performance for example in playing strategic games and surpassed human champion performance. This project aims to study, analyze, and develop RL algorithms for control of partially observable dynamical systems. More specifically, the following research directions will be followed:

  • To study and quantify the effect of partial observability, noise, and uncertainty.
  • To study how data can be efficiently used in RL algorithms including model-free and model-building approaches.
  • To develop efficient algorithms for partially observable dynamical systems.

Deadline : June 11, 2023.

PhD position summary/title: We are looking for a PhD student in Applied Physics, with the focus on electronic properties and device performance of two-dimensional crystals of organic semiconductors.

The main focus of your research is to investigate the growth of large-area two-dimensional crystal of organic semiconductors (2DCOS) films with well-controlled thickness to approach their potential applications (e.g., energy conversion, light emission, memory and sensing) and to probe their electronic properties correlated to the corresponding device performance. You will fabricate organic semiconductor thin films, 2DCOS crystals and device fabrication and (opto)electronic characterization in our cleanroom full with characterization equipment, further explore the chemical, physical and electronic structure of 2DCOS films based on a wide variety of surface science techniques both in house and at synchrotron radiation laboratories to characterize them, e.g., angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to map the band structure to correlate with mobility results obtained in device, the momentum-dependent interband transition to shed light on the exciton dispersion related to photophysical properties, etc.

Deadline : 2nd of June 2023.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Wireless Communication Networks

You will be involved in the project “Real-Time Networked Systems: Goal-Optimal Design and Performance Limits” funded by the Swedish Research Council. The advancement of smart devices equipped with sensing, computing, and communication capabilities has led to a wide range of latency-sensitive applications that require efficient and automated operation through wireless connectivity but without direct and pervasive human supervision. These real-time networked systems are driven fundamentally by the necessity to automate decisions in a sense-compute-actuate cycle. Scalable support for such systems depends on what we refer to as “semantic communication”: the provisioning of the right piece of information to the right point of computation (or actuation) at the right moment in time. However, to date the theoretical basis for designing such systems is missing since the classical data communication is agnostic to the purpose of data transfer and to the meaning and/or the importance/accuracy of the transmitted messages. We envision an end-to-end architecture that enables the generation of just the right amount of data and transmission of the right content to the right place at the right time. This will be achieved through a redesign of the entire process of information generation, transmission, and usage in unison, by incorporating the semantics of information, defined not necessarily as the meaning of the messages but as their significance, possibly within a real-time constraint, relative to the purpose of the data exchange. For more details on semantic communications see our review paper entitled “Semantic Communications in Networked Systems: A Data Significance Perspective” published in IEEE Network, vol. 36, no. 4, pp. 233-240, July/August 2022.

(09) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Computer Science

The research for the advertised position will be within a project concerning parameterized complexity of constraint satisfaction problems (CSP). CSPs are a highly important class of formalisms across many subareas of computer science (for instance, automated reasoning, machine learning, scheduling, computational linguistics, optimisation, computational biology, and verification) and CSPs have been used in computer science since the early 1970s to specify various problems. Many (but not all!) practically interesting CSPs are NP-hard and are thus regarded to be intractable. The Boolean satisfiability problem is a well-known NP-hard example while a polynomial-time example is to solve linear equations over the rationals. Gaining a better understanding of the computational complexity of CSPs is an extremely relevant task.
