PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarships (2) in Machine Learning: Uncertainty Quantification for Graph Neural Networks – DTU Compute

In the coming years, machine learning is expected to revolutionize molecular discovery and design. The traditional cycle of screening, simulation, and synthesis will be enhanced by automated, data driven, high-throughput screening, capable of predicting the function of novel compounds. Deep neural networks are the pivotal machine learning technology that enables these advancements. In particular, the recently developed graph convolutional neural networks show outstanding results. A central scientific challenge is to search the vast space of potential molecules, and the state-of-the-art is uncertainty guided search; however, current neural networks lack precise and calibrated uncertainty estimates. Our goal is to create novel methods for uncertainty quantification in graph neural networks, for example by advancing techniques such as variational approximation, ensembles, Monte Carlo sampling, and post-calibration.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Characterizing methane fed microbiomes for co-metabolism of trace organic chemicals in groundwater – DTU Sustain

Intense agricultural and farming activities lead to pollution of the environment via run-off of nutrients and other organic pollutants (e.g., pesticides) to different water bodies. High nutrient levels can lead to eutrophication and may reach levels that prevent water use for drinking purposes. The project will address the removal of nutrients and pesticides from groundwater taking advantage of methane already present in many groundwater streams. The project relies on the use of bioinformatics to characterize the methane fed microbiomes and provide input data for metagenome based metabolic models. These models are then used to optimize bioreactors to treat groundwater. The PhD will work with a team of interdisciplinary researchers as part of the project Metagenome-based Metabolic Modeling for Green transition of Water Treatment – application to Methanotrophy, granted by the Danish Research Council.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Chemical-Spatial differentiable Digital Twin for Atomic-scale Catalyst Design – DTU Energy

Atomic scale design of catalysts is typically done by searching the chemical composition space. Finding new ways for fast explorations of the structural and compositional phase space fast can accelerate discovery of new catalysts for Power-to-X tenfold. Traditional workflow-based high throughput methods are often slow in traversing the chemical space, as one must search for the low energy atomic structures for all new compositions and evaluate the properties. In this PhD project, we will take a digital twin approach by developing generative deep learning models for crystal graphs that follow the symmetry groups associated with crystals structure and learns to probabilistically generate new low-energy structures and compositions. By utilizing crystal graph data that is labeled for the property as well as unlabeled from open databases, we will train these models to be able to propose new catalysts from a joint distribution of chemical composition and structure that are likely to be highly active for the catalytic Power2X processes under investigation in CAPeX. The digital twin will be implemented in a “Decentralized and AsynchroNous Materials Acceleration Platform” (DANMAP) developed in CAPeX for accelerated closed-loop discovery, synthesis, and testing of candidate materials with a higher fidelity method and it will also be used for further model-based optimization.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Ultrafast Lasers and Frequency Comb – DTU Electro

The optical frequency comb has been a key enabling technique in photonics. It simultaneously combines ultra-broad optical bandwidth, and extreme resolutions in both time and frequency. These remarkable properties led to the Nobel Prize being awarded in 2005 for comb-enabled precision spectroscopy. Instead of a single comb, we will explore dual-comb lasers to reach the targeted measurement parameters. A major challenge for dual-comb systems is overcoming the high complexity of traditional approaches using a pair of electronically locked modelocked lasers. The project will investigate single-cavity solutions to overcome such issues. While doing so, we will further investigate the limits of such a technology as well. Though most of the current technologies operate at visible and near-infrared wavelengths, there is a surge in mid-infrared and short-wave infrared applications. Thus, we want to advance this frequency comb technology towards longer wavelengths beyond 2 µm.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Fellowships – CO2 Conversion to Solids: Increase Sustainability by Transforming Waste Building Materials to New, Valuable Products – DTU Physics

As a result of recently funded projects, our research group is looking to fill 6 positions. The goal is to develop fast, cheap, environmentally friendly ways to mineralise CO2, to convert it back to solid, where it will remain stable for millennia. Even with the very best alternative energy sources and conversion of CO2 into products, current air and ocean CO2 levels will need 1,000 to 10,000 years to return to preindustrial levels. To reduce climate change and ocean acidification, CO2 must be converted to solid and put back into the Earth, where it came from in the first place. At DTU Physics, we are running several projects in parallel, that range from very fundamental investigations of mineral-water-gas properties, through developing predictive models and new experimental methods and instrumentation, to applying research results and designing industrial CO2 trapping processes. The need is urgent, the task is challenging and a multidisciplinary approach is essential – so we are looking for highly motivated group members, including chemists, physicists, nanoscientists, mineralogists, geoscientists, engineers and others. We welcome group members at all levels, from young bachelor students to experienced scientists and engineers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Electronic-Photonic Integration – DTU Electro

The intimate integration of state-of-the-art electronics with ultra-low capacitance optoelectronic devices is set to revolutionize both the photonic and electronics fields. As an example, the sensitivity of optical detectors may be improved by orders of magnitude. Photonic links (interconnects) on electronic chips can significantly lower the total chip power consumption since electrical interconnects currently consume most of the power and most of the gates and photonic links are intrinsically more efficient. Since communication would become “free” with proper electronic- photonic integration the computing architecture and power would enter a new paradigm [1]. The technology complexity including photonics technology in CMOS fabrication is large, but crucially it does not require cryogenic cooling or similar, so, once developed, it can easily find its way to self-driving cars or powerful mobile phones with much longer battery life as well as of course supercomputers and data centers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in solid state electrochemical TEM – DTU Energy

P2X is becoming a key technology in green energy infrastructures, and its core is electrolysis. The most efficient electrolysis technology is solid oxide electrolysis (SOEC), but the primary concern for implementing SOEC on a large scale is the loss of efficiency caused by cell degradation. The most detrimental degradation occurs as nano-structural changes in the Ni-containing electrode, but the mechanisms are not fully understood. The goal of the project is for the first time to map particle Ni rounding and wetting as function of temperature, gas composition, and applied electrical potential. The results will bring the SOEC technology ahead by determining thresholds for operating parameters where detrimental nanoscale degradation can be avoided.
