PhD position summary/title: Researcher/PhD Candidate: Social Life of Medieval Canon Law
As a PhD candidate you will be responsible for one of the subprojects, more specifically, for a subproject that considers how ideas and notions of social hierarchy are transmitted, appropriated, altered, and promoted through clusters of authoritative statements in canonical collections. Your PhD research, which is to result in a dissertation, charts notions of social hierarchy and stratification in canonical compilations throughout the early and high Middle Ages. It represents a novel approach to the genre of canon law and directly contributes to the relevance of canonical sources and studies for the wider historical academic community.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate at the Behavioural Science Institute and Donders Institute
Do you have a MSc degree in psychology, biology or cognitive neuroscience? Do you want to be part of a project that makes use of cutting-edge science to make a direct real-world impact? Apply for this PhD position at the Behavioural Science and Donders Institute and join a project that bridges the fields of affective neuroscience, serious games and clinical psychology to test and improve a virtual reality biofeedback training programme for the Dutch police. Police officers often have to make split second decisions under threat. Threat and associated psychophysiological changes are known to impair acute decision making in police officers and can lead to stress-related mental health problems in the long run. Together with the Police Academy, we have developed a VR-based biofeedback game, in which participants learn to control their threat physiology in an active action context via a closed loop-biofeedback system (short trailer). Initial results have shown great promise and therefore this game will now be further developed to be implemented in the curriculum for the Dutch police.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: MEMORISE: Virtualisation and Multimodal Exploration of Heritage on Nazi Persecution
This PhD Project is part of the EU-funded Horizon programme MEMORISE: Virtualisation and Multimodal Exploration of Heritage on Nazi Persecution. The aim of MEMORISE is to create a comprehensive infrastructure to preserve and enhance heritage on Nazi persecution, supporting easy access to, exploration of, and engagement with this heritage. The PhD project will look specifically at on-site and virtual visits of heritage sites. Its aim is to develop an educational concept to evaluate the benefits and limitations of existing user interfaces for learning about and engaging with heritage on Nazi persecution. The outcome will also be relevant for other types of memorial sites and creative industries. This PhD project analyses existing approaches that utilise automated computation and virtual and augmented reality techniques to engage with history in general and Holocaust memory in particular. The project develops and tests an educational concept based on reviewing existing educational approaches in Holocaust education and media literacy fields and evaluates best-practice approaches, learning principles and heuristics. This offers new approaches to learning about complex heritage through digital technologies. The project will test the concept with pilots at memorial sites and will evaluate the usability of the virtual environments, the search infrastructure and the educational concepts.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Learning and Control with Spiking Neural Networks at the Donders Centre for Cognition
Are you interested in how our brain is able to so precisely control the body, and adapt to new situations? Would you like to dive deep into current theories for how this works, and develop new ones? Are you either highly interested in modelling the brain, and/or in applying the resulting theories to practical problems? Then this is a PhD position you should apply for. To successfully control the body our brain needs to generate stable states (i.e. keep a hand somewhere), but also full dynamic behaviours (i.e. a full arm swing). The brain does this highly efficiently through networks of spiking neurons – the efficiency and success of which is yet to be reproduced in AI. Crucially, neural activity during dynamic tasks is often observed to lie on lower-dimensional manifolds. Why this is useful, and how networks generate and adapt such activity manifolds, is the subject of many theoretical models but still very much an open question. In this NWO-funded 4-year PhD project, using tools from both AI and neuroscience, you will develop neural networks which produce such low-dimensional manifolds and then use these to learn efficient and effective control. This project is expected to yield more capable AI systems and further our understanding of brain computations.

Are you fascinated by how our brains construct our conscious visual reality? By how our eyes move around several times per second, our brains apparently always knowing where to look? If that applies to you, and you furthermore are excited about developing new experimental neuroimaging and analytical methods (including deep learning), then this PhD position may be right for you! As part of this job, you will conduct research testing several key hypotheses (related to the ‘Bayesian’ brain) about information sampling during visual perception. What types of visual information are dominant in determining where we look? Which brain structures are involved in processing this information? How is this related to what we know about neural motivational control in general?

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Complex Reinforcement Learning and Geometrical Aperiodic Environments at the Donders Centre for Cognition
We offer you a full time (100%) position for 4 years. This project is supervised by Dr Tal Kachman and Prof. van Gerven (PhD supervisor). You will be employed at the Artificial Intelligence department of the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour and have the opportunity to collaborate and interact with renowned international experts in machine learning, computational neuroscience and neuromorphic computing. You will also benefit from the extensive training programme offered by the Donders Graduate School. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to supervise MSc and BSc students in their (honours) thesis projects.You will be responsible for innovating and creating state-of-the-art algorithms in complex systems such as reinforcement learning environments with emphasis on multi-agent interactions. This will also entail creating production level research code in Python, C++, and generating open-source knowledge base. Knowledge dissemination is an integral part, and you will be expected to publish extensively as well as give invited seminars talks and produce general-purpose
content such as blogs.
