(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: 4-year PhD position in Automatic Sign Language Processing

We are seeking a highly motivated and talented individual to join our research team as a PhD student in the area of natural language processing for sign languages, especially neural machine translation. The successful candidate will work on fundamental technologies for sign languages that will improve the quality of sign language machine translation systems. SIGMA aims to provide fundamental tools for automatically processing sign languages, with the main goal of improving a higher-level task: sign language machine translation. Improving machine translation for sign languages is relevant for Swiss and international societies. While for hearing persons translation technology is mature and usable in every-day situations, such tools do not exist for Deaf sign language users. Deaf individuals can only be full members of a digital society if translation technology is afforded to them. The project is situated at the intersection between computer science, linguistics and accessibility studies, and therefore is highly interdisciplinary.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student

The research focus of the chair is on social-cognitive development in infancy and childhood. The project focuses on multilingual language development in early childhood. Previous research shows that monolingual and multilingual children differ in the repertoire and flexibility of their communicative behavior. In the planned research project, the characteristics of these differences in early childhood (0 – 6 years) as well as the underlying mechanisms will be investigated in more detail. For this purpose, behavioral methods but also eye tracking or electroencephalography (EEG) can be applied.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in computational psychiatry

Our lab is interested in novel ways of phenotyping psychotic disorders, such as quantitative analysis of speech and language with large language models and natural language processing. In the context of a multinational EU Horizon project (TRUSTING) we will apply quantitative language analysis to predict relapse in psychotic disorders in a clinical trial. We will design and implement multimodal paradigms (e.g. combined fMRI and speech production) and use methods such as machine learning, multilevel analyses and computational modeling to decompose behavioral performance into interpretable aspects of cognitive and perceptual processing.
