PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Computational Biology
Ancient DNA (aDNA) has changed history studies, enabling us to analyze early genetic variation directly. In recent years, there has been a sharp increase in the amount of collected aDNA and high-profile investigations. Still, insufficient information about the geographical origin and admixture has limited the usefulness of the collected data. The project aims to develop population genetic models and investigate population history in human and microbial populations. We will study Viking and Israelite populations and bacteria collected from archeological sites. We ask questions like how, where, and when these populations migrated, how did they respond to epidemics, as well as the timing, rate, and extent of adaptive evolution in response to infectious diseases or changes in the environment. We seek to recruit an excellent student interested in doing world-class research at a leading lab. The candidate will work jointly with Dr. Eran Elhaik and experts to develop statistical methods for projects in population genetics and infectious diseases.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Physics with focus on Laser Wakefield Acceleration (MSCA project EuPRAXIA-DN)
The doctoral project is focused on experimental research on laser-driven (laser-wakefield) acceleration of electrons to high energies, utilization of strong field gradients in laser-produced plasmas, and generation of intense X-rays utilizing these electron pulses. You will benefit from access to a new and unique multi-terawatt laser system that at the High Power Laser Facility. It is based on optical parametric chirped pulse amplification (OPCPA), and promises access to sub-10 fs laser pulses at up to 100 Hz repetition rate. The aim is to develop concepts that can unlock new means for laser wakefield acceleration through laser pulse shaping. In a laser-wakefield electron accelerator, the maximum electron energy obtained in a single stage is limited since the accelerated electrons move faster than the laser pulse in the plasma. This mismatch usually leads to a slippage of the electrons in the plasma wave, and eventually the electrons outrun the driving laser pulse. A specific goal for this project is to overcome this ”dephasing” effect and to increase the maximum energy that can be obtained in a single stage by locking the accelerating phase through laser pulse shaping. You will have access to the wide-ranging EuPRAXIA-DN training program which will include several international schools and workshops on plasma accelerator science and technology, as well as complementary skills. The fellowship includes a temporary placement (so-called secondment) at IST in Portugal which will provide critical insight into high performance computing challenges. The purpose of the secondment is to foster interdisciplinary collaboration, knowledge exchange, and networking, enhancing the fellow’s research experience and broadening their expertise in different environments and research contexts.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Aerosol Technology with focus on secondary use of ash from waste incineration
To create a sustainable society, we need to increase the circular use of materials, meaning that we need to utilise recycled materials and industrial side streams, replacing primary raw materials. At the same time, we must ensure that this industrial transition does not result in uncontrolled emissions. An untapped secondary resource with great potential is ash from waste incineration. During the incineration, energy is recovered through production of heat and electricity, and at the same time the amount of waste is reduced. Through various standardized and advanced techniques, we can gain a better understanding of both the ash itself and of the properties of the particles being emitted to the air during secondary use of the ash, with the aim of better understanding how we use the ash as a resource and minimize uncontrolled emissions and exposure of toxic substances.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in sedimentary geochemistry
A doctoral student position in Geobiosphere Science under the research topic of palaeoecology and palaeoclimatology is hereby announced at the Department of Geology, Lund University (LU), Sweden. The research project aims at improving our understanding of the emergence of planktonic calcification and its relation to seawater geochemistry changes. The emergence of calcifying plankton in the oceans shifted the major carbonate production from the shallow seas to the open marine realm with large consequences on the carbonate saturation of the oceans and their buffering capacities. Evolution of the key organisms occurred during the Late Triassic. At the same time, the supercontinent Pangea started to break up, with large-scale tectonic reorganizations and significant changes in weathering and nutrient enrichment with major implications for marine biogeochemical cycles. Our understanding of the causes and effects of all these changes is still limited. This project intends to explore the hypothesized link between the changes in seawater chemistry, their causes and the emergence of planktonic calcification.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Energy Sciences with focus on advanced numerical design methodologies for future aviation engines
In the EU-funded project MYTHOS involving five participating organizations from three EU countries, we will develop a new ground-breaking design methodology for future short- and medium-range civil aircraft engines. These engines are intended to be powered by a wide range of liquid and gaseous fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and hydrogen. The project aims to meet the goal of reducing carbon dioxide emissions for civil aviation according to the ACARE SRIA goals in the short, medium and long term until 2050. In an aircraft engine, jet fuel is burned in a gas turbine, which in turn propels the aircraft. Depending on the chemical composition of the fuel, the combustion will look different. In order to be able to use a wide range of fuels, which is becoming increasingly important, it will be essential to investigate whether we can improve the operation of the aircraft engine so that climate-neutral fuels can be used and that different fuels can be used without the need to modify the engine. The work of energy scientists within MYTHOS focuses on combustion chamber studies and optimization using numerical simulation methods to increase fuel flexibility so that SAF and hydrogen can be used in the same combustion chamber without this being adjusted.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Biology
The overarching goal of this PhD project is to understand why the Eurasian spruce bark beetle Ips typographus seems to attack one of its secondary hosts at increasing rates in a warming climate. The project is expected to provide fundamental knowledge of the host preferences and host specificity of this devastating insect as well as insight into its performance on primary versus secondary host trees/breeding material. Studies will also be conducted on the symbiotic fungi of the beetle, which are likely of great importance for the success of the beetles on different host species. Furthermore, the importance of tree semiochemicals, individual insect odorant receptors and the gentic basis of the beetles’ host preferences will be analyzed using state-of-the-art methods. From an applied perspective, the project is expected to identify new semiochemicals that can be used for improved pest control as well as resistance markers in the trees that may be selected in plant breeding programs for better protection againts attacks. To approach these aims, behavioural experiments (in the lab and field) will be performed to study beetle preferences. Chemical analysis of bark extracts will be conducted to reveal profiles of volatile organic compounds, non-volatile defence compounds, and nutrients in the different hosts, and their effects on the beetles and fungal symbionts. Breeding experiments will be performed to study the performance and fitness of beetles and their symbionts on different hosts, and molecular and genomic/transcriptomic methods will be used to address the genetic and sensory basis of the beetles’ host preferences. Hence, the project is suitable for candidates with a strong background and an interest in insect chemical ecology, preferably with expertise also in molecular biology and genomic/transcriptomic methods.
