PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate Life Cycle Assessment for Sustainable Health Care | Faculty of Science and Engineering
Dutch healthcare accounts for 7-8% of the total national greenhouse gas emissions. In hospitals, at least 20% of this is related to the operating theatre. This includes waste, inhalation gases for anesthesia, energy for air refreshment, and medicine residues in wastewater. To change the behavior of all stakeholders, this project assembled a very diverse team to make the operating theatre greener by gaining insight into the biggest polluters. The CAREFREE (Creating A healthieR Environment for FutuRE patiEnts) project aims to fill knowledge gaps but also to provide tools that enhance trust, acceptance, and a change in behavior for the myriad of stakeholders. The project is coordinated by Maastricht University/MUMC and funded by NWO through the Knowledge and Innovation Covenant’s ‘Collaboration in mission-driven innovation’ (NWO-KIC). The project is also introduced in a short video. The project will be executed by a consortium with partners from the universities and university medical centers of Maastricht, Amsterdam, and Nijmegen, in collaboration with a wide range of companies and other stakeholders (Fresenius Kabi, B-Braun Medical, PureBlue Water, Waterschap Limburg, Groene Zorg Alliantie, Landelijk Netwerk de Groene OK, Milieuplatform Zorgsector NL, Patiëntenfederatie Nederland, Nederlandse Vereniging voor Heelkunde, Vereniging voor Hygiëne & Infectiepreventie in de Gezondheidszorg, Nederlandse Federatie van Universitair Medisch Centra, Zuyd Hoge School, National Institute for Public Health and the Environment-RIVM).

PhD position summary/title: PhD position | Inter-area communication during sensory perception| Department Cognitive Neuroscience
Our sensory cortices are receiving and processing signals from the environment. Frontal cortex also sends signals to the sensory in order to inform about upcoming sensory input. However, it is unclear how sensory cortex can be optimally receptive to both incoming sensory input and feedback from frontal cortex at the same time. In this ERC-funded PhD project you will investigate how this communication exactly operates focussing on the role of neural oscillations in network communications. You will use computational models of oscillatory coupling that describe inter-area communication and test the outcomes of these models using psychophysics, EEG, and existing ECoG data. This PhD project will provide insights into fundamental principles of inter-region network communications. You will join the PI group led by Dr. Sanne ten Oever, embedded in the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience at Maastricht University. You will work together with a postdoc and another PhD student recruited for the same project and embedded in a very open and cooperative group of colleagues and supervisors from the Brain Stimulation and Cognition group as well as the Perception, Attention, Learning and Memory lab.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate | School for Cardiovascular Diseases (CARIM) | Department of Cardiologie
The Heart Failure Research team of Prof.dr.Stephane Heymans within CARIM and the University (Hospital) of Maastricht (www.hfresearch.eu) is looking for a(MD) PhD candidates to to identify the best immune/genetic targets of non-ischemic cardiomyopathies. If you are interested in identifying new therapeutic traget by working with iPSc cells and animal models of our genetic cardiomyopathy patients, you will like this project. Focus will be on the titin truncating variants. If you have expertise in histology, in vitro iPSc and in vivo animal work, esp. heart failure, you will be able to have a very quick start . A strong opportunity will be the collaboration with clinical researchers and industry partners to validate your iPSc and animal data in the transcriptomics (cardiac samples) and clinical data of patients with the same underlying genetic (titin tv) cardiac disease. PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate | School for Cardiovascular Diseases (CARIM) | Department of Cardiologie
The Heart Failure Research team of Prof.dr.Stephane Heymans within CARIM and the University (Hospital) of Maastricht (www.hfresearch.eu) is looking for (MD) PhD candidates to identify the best immune/genetic targets of non-ischemic cardiomyopathies. If you are interested in unravelling disease pathophysiology of inflammatory and/or genetic cardiomyopathies, and as such identifying new therapeutic targets, you will like this project. You will help to analyze the increasing amount of transcriptomics, proteomics and whole genome sequencing data (bulk and single cell in heart/blood) in our centre in our cohort on non-ischemic CMPs. You will unravel new targets for drug development in specific subgroups of genetic or inflammatory cardiomyopathies. Pending on your clinical and/or molecular expertise, you will drive the further development of these targets either in experimental studies (mice/ in vitro) or validate your findings in the existing human cardiac/blood samples with additional expression studies. If you have expertise/interest in data science for omics analysis, if you are passionate about a possible clinical impact, and would like to translate this to new therapies, you are the right candidate.
