The aim of this project is to analyse the vibrations transmitted by consumer products to their hands in order to improve their perception. An accurate model of the product dynamics coupled to hand can provide us with predictions on how the vibrations are perceived by the consumers. These predictions from the models can be made at an early stage before any prototypes are made. If unpleasant human perception being predicted, then the vibration levels can be reduced by design modification for healthy products.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Predictive Maintenance (V23.0730)
To support the modern, robust and smart factories, it is critical that breakdown maintenance is reduced to a minimum and the management is allowed to have the luxury of a pre-planned scheduled maintenance. To accomplish this, predictive maintenance is required, which can accurately track assets’ performance, status and real time health condition using real-time vibration data. In recent era, the use of machine health and condition monitoring technologies in predictive maintenance practices has escalated owing to the interest from major industries like manufacturing, aerospace and civil, for which reliability in operations is a crucial factor. For reliable monitoring and diagnosis of machines, vibration analysis is carried out in order to anticipate the defects and degradations that can affect the performance of a machine. Predictive maintenance requires online and real time indicators of a machine’s status and health using instrumentation and control equipment for data acquisition and analysis. In this project, we will acquire vibration data using sensors, data acquisition on an engineering system. We will analyze both time domain and frequency domain data to predict the health of the structure in different operating conditions. This vibration data will be effectively utilized to assist in devising a predictive maintenance plan and to reach the root cause of these issues up to the source component. Finally, timely maintenance strategy will be pursued in order to avoid breakdown maintenance.

PhD position summary/title: PhD in Artificial Intelligence and Mathematics for Cognitive Devices (1.0 FTE) (V23.0770)
The project builds on expertise at the Bernoulli institute of Mathematics, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. The Artificial Intelligence department contributes theoretical and experimental research on the alignment of knowledge-based and data-driven methods in artificial intelligence. The Mathematics department is actively investigating the interpretation of data using innovative statistical methods (in particular Bayesian networks).
The objective of the four-year position is that the candidate acquires unique expertise in this research area and performs original and solid work that can lead to a number of research articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals and conference proceedings, which together will form the basis of a thesis leading to a PhD degree (Dr) at the University of Groningen.

The Zernike institute is actively investigating cognitive hardware materials (in particular HfO2 memristor devices). Extensive data sets will be generated using a newly acquired Microprober. PhD position summary/title: PhD: Evolution of Russian foreign policy in the context of its war against Ukraine (V23.0789)
Applications are invited for a fully-funded four-year PhD position in the field of International Relations, focusing on the evolution of Russian foreign policy in the context of its war against Ukraine. Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 represents a watershed moment in the country’s foreign policy as well as its internal state-society relations. The war has caused a complete breakdown of Russia’s already foundering relations with Europe and the US, an acceleration of its turn towards China, India and other Global South states, and the ramping up of authoritarianism at home. Despite several of these trends being underway at least since 2014, this turning point caught many academics, analysts and governments by surprise and the question of what drives Russia’s foreign policy behaviour has thus once more emerged as a prominent topic in political, societal and academic debates, though not always in a rigorous or informed manner. There is therefore a need for further scientific, methodical and evidence-based investigation of the topic, especially of its evolution since the full-scale invasion, which has turned several ‘received wisdoms’ upside down. The overall research question the PhD project will investigate is thus: How has Russian foreign policy and the key factors, contexts and actors shaping it evolved in the context of its war against Ukraine?

The project will have three main outcomes. First, it will change the dominant historical narrative around modern Iran, which pivots on Islam, conservatism, and men. Secondly, it will uncover the role played by Left-wing women activists in the history of modern Iran, and enrich a growing body of work on the political history of non-Western women. Thirdly, it will hold societal relevance in the context of the current struggles by Iranian women towards gender equality and political freedom.

(09) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD position “Optimizing performance prediction and selection in the military” (V23.0786)
Which psychological and physical skills are most predictive of later military performance? Recruiting, selecting, and developing individuals with the right skillset is of utmost importance for the military. But, how can we determine the “right” skillset, and what is the best way to assess the relevant skills? In this project, the PhD candidate will closely collaborate with the Special Forces of the Royal Dutch Army to work on these questions. Important tasks are collecting data using psychological and physical tests with (candidate) commandos, determining the quality of these tests, and establishing statistical models integrating psychological and physical factors that are predictive of later performance. The results are a basis for academic journal publications and translated into useful tools and insights for the military, so that selection and development of commandos can be improved. The PhD project will be carried out at the Department of Psychology, University of Groningen, and will be embedded in the Centre of Expertise for Talent Development. Given the close collaboration with the military, the PhD candidate will also regularly visit the training base of the commandos.

Coastal ecosystems are globally degrading, resulting in the loss of ecological functions and services such as food provisioning, coastal protection, and water purification. Ecological restoration provides a hopeful outlook to reverse these losses, aiding the regeneration of degraded ecosystems. However, the restoration of coastal foundation species such as seagrasses remains challenging, with overall low success rates, whereas degradation is still ongoing. Hence, there is an urgent need to rapidly advance coastal restoration practice. This project will contribute to developing the cutting-edge science that underpins successful restoration practice. The Dutch coastal landscape has been heavily altered by human activities. Seagrass restoration is a promising approach to enhance marine biodiversity recovery and to improve coastal multifunctionality.

The aim of this inter- and transdisciplinary project is to investigate disaster preparedness by means of a simulation model of behavioral preparedness and emergency management in the case of a cascading disaster. The province of Groningen, due to its existing vulnerabilities, offers an instructive case study to model the combination of a major earthquake and a dyke failure. The project will be interdisciplinary (integrating theories from analytical sociology, cognitive psychology and citizen science), multi-method (agent-based modeling and citizen science) and transdisciplinary (adopting a problem-centered approach that allows citizens, first responders and policy makers to contribute to the development of the project).

PhD position summary/title: Interdisciplinary PhD project on ‘Menopausal Fears’ (1.0 FTE) (V23.0759)
The PhD-project connects two formally separated areas of investigation into menopausal complaints: empirical research and interpretation from a historical and cultural perspective. It adds to the recent medicalization of the menopause an analysis of how negative attitudes (i.e. fears of ageing, loss of femininity and disease) towards the menopause, often expressed in the media, are related to how women experience (peri)menopause. In doing so, it builds on recent research suggesting that the experience of menopause is influenced not only by biological factors but also by sociocultural and psychological ones, and hence contributes to a more comprehensive perception of this transition in women’s lives. Via the Groningen database Lifelines the project investigates current and—in case of peri- and postmenopausal women—former, premenopausal attitudes towards the menopause in 35+-years-old women. To understand what might have influenced these women’s thinking, the project historically researches popular media outlets and feminist writings over the period 1950-2020. This will offer important insights into the cultural roots and societal mechanisms that contribute to how women experience the menopause.
