PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Molecular Imprinting and Chemical Sensing
The PhD project is focused on the development of sensory platforms based on Molecularly Imprinted Polymers (MIPs) for the detection of polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). MIPs are the synthetic equivalent of antibodies, consisting of a highly crosslinked polymeric network with molecule-specific active/binding sites distributed throughout that are generated during the synthesis process. The manner in which this is achieved varies, though all routes lean on polymer formation around a desired molecular template accompanied by its later extraction. This process can be likened to molding dough around a key to capture its likeness, but on a molecular level. In the past, the SE department has successfully developed MIPs for glucose, pyocyanin, drugs of abuse and even some PFAS. This project therefore seeks to build on what we have previously attained, with the selected PhD student furthering our research in the field of PFAS detection.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Synthetic Biology
The PhD project is focused on the development of sensor platforms based on so-called surface imprinted polymers (SIPs). These thin polymeric layers are deposited onto sensor electrodes after which they are imprinted with macro-targets. In this way, the polymer forms a mold around the target (e.g. a bacterium) and upon removal of this biological or chemical entity, micro cavities are created on the surface of the polymer film which are complementary to the imprinted targets in size, shape and the distribution of functional groups. These SIPs can then be implemented into a sensor as they will now selectively capture the target when they encounter it in for example a liquid sample. In the past, the SE department has successfully developed SIP-based sensors for bacteria, cancer cells and proteins. In this project, the PhD student will investigate the possibility of preparing imprints for the recognition of bacteria without the need of a living template. In order to do so, key recognition features of the microorganism will be mimicked synthetically.
The first goal is to obtain synthetic layers that can recognize and bind the bacteria. Following, these layers will be incorporated into a sensor in order to characterize them in terms of sensitivity and selectivity. Moreover, the project includes the exploration of the sensor in potential application fields such as environmental monitoring, health diagnosis or food safety. Research within the Sensor Engineering research group at the Faculty of Science and Engineering of Maastricht University is focused on developing innovative sensor technologies for implementation in diverse fields ranging from medical diagnostics to food safety assessment. For this position, we are looking for a motivated PhD student with a master degree and a solid background in bio-, organic, polymer or analytical chemistry. PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Biosensing
The focus of the PhD project is the development of sensing platforms using both natural elements (such as antibodies and nucleic acids) and artificial receptors such as surface/molecularly imprinted polymers. These sensors will later be tested using different characterization techniques and different readings will be used to investigate the sensor performance (sensitivity, stability, reproducibility, selectivity). Particular attention will be paid to the sensors for the nucleic acid detection, including the Sherlock technique and aptasensors, etc. Special emphasis will be placed on sensors designed for nucleic acid detection, including the Sherlock technique and aptasensors, known for their remarkable selectivity through specific cleavage of DNA/RNA strands or high-affinity binding of targets to aptamers.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Organic ChemistryRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is an autoimmune disease characterized by infiltration of immune cells into the synovial membrane within the joints with concomitant production of pro-inflammatory cytokines. Current medication relies on the administration of methotrexate and antibodies against these pro-inflammatory cytokines. Because this medication inhibits the immune system through the entire body and not only at the sites of RA related inflammation, the patients suffer from an increased risk towards infections.
In this project, you will develop a new line of treatment for RA, which inhibits the immune system more selectively. To this end, you will express in E. coli antibody fragments containing a cysteine mutation close to the antigen binding site. In a second part of the project, you will synthesize a chemical linker containing a photoswitchable linker, a bulcky group and a malemide functionality for conjugation to the antibody fragment. By conjugating this linker close to the antigen-binding site we anticipate to control the position of the bulcky group using light as a spatiotemporal switch. Using light of a specific wavelength will position the bulcky group close to the antigen-binding site thereby preventing binding of the cytokine and thus inactivating the antibody. Upon irradiation with a different wavelength, the bulcky group pivots away and binding of the cytokine is enabled.

PhD position summary/title: Phd position on personalized lifestyle interventions following ICU stay
Annually, more than 90,000 patients are admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) in the Netherlands. As in-hospital mortality has dropped to 15%, 85% of the patients are discharged alive from the hospital. However, a large number of these patients have acquired severe weakness and functional disabilities. Many need to be transferred to rehabilitation centers, or nursing homes, and even the younger patients often fail to return to work. For many patients, post-ICU hospital discharge is the start of a long journey with substantial physical, cognitive, and/or mental health problems. Currently, awareness and recognition of these symptoms, known as post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) are growing. Unfortunately, there is no consensus on the best treatment strategies for PICS, probably due to the lack of understanding of the pathophysiological processes and risk factors underlying PICS. In this project we will evaluate the efficacy of lifestyle interventions, combining personalized exercise and nutritional intervention to allow more rapid and complete recovery.
The current project will apply personalized exercise and nutritional intervention in ex-patients who have been admitted to the ICU and who are still compromised with regards to their physical function (PICS) and evaluate the efficacy of such a program to help them regain health and functional performance.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Protein requirements
The World Health Organization (WHO) has set the Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA) for protein intake at 0.8 g/kg/d for adults. The RDA represents the minimal amount of protein intake that is required to prevent net protein losses. However, protein intakes exceeding the RDA have shown to elicit several benefits such as attenuating age-related and disease-related muscle loss or improving the adaptive responses to exercise. Thus, there is a need to establish optimal protein requirements as opposed to merely the minimal protein requirements. Within the m3 research group (www.m3– research.nl), we study the impact of exercise and nutritional interventions on protein metabolism, and how protein requirements are modulated by factors such as age, physical activity, or clinical conditions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position at the Department of Macro, International and Labour Economics
The aim of the project is to better understand the topic of social stratification (i.e. the poor, the vulnerable, the middle class, and the upper class) and its links to structural change and the Kuznets-waves hypothesis (Milanovic, 2016). The research project is guided by several (primarily empirical) aspects, such as (i) developing a multidimensional framework for the empirical identification of key social strata; (ii) providing further theoretical development on the idea of Kuznets waves and empirically testing it; and (iii) investigating the connection of structural change and social stratification via the Kuznets waves hypothesis.
The selected candidate will work with various types of data sets, including detailed distributional household survey and tax declaration data, such as EU-SILC, the Luxembourg Income Study, and the World Inequality Lab and from the newly available Statistics On-Line of the Poverty and Inequality Portal by the World Bank. Moreover, for the identification of social strata and the connection of structural change, the social stratification and the Kuznets wave hypothesis, a variety of modelling methods will be explored, e.g. machine learning algorithms, support vector machines, and VAR. For this, we seek candidates with a strong interest in one or several of the questions and (preferably) some experience in working with household survey data, and/or machine learning algorithms.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate Life Cycle Assessment for a safe and sustainable chemical industry
The transition to a sustainable society poses major challenges for the Dutch chemical industry. Currently, safety considerations and economies of scale dictate a landscape of large plants clustered at industrial sites. Products include fertilizers, plastics and vaccine carrier proteins and are mostly of fossil origin. A roadmap to guide the industry through the sustainability transition while maintaining economic viability and at least existing safety levels does not yet exist due to the lack of suitable technology. This work explores a possible solution for the common building block acrylonitrile.
Presently, acrylonitrile production is large scale and involves storage and transportation of large quantities of toxic and/or flammable substances. It is an intermediate for a range of materials. The alternative plasma approach offers, from a process safety viewpoint, an inherent safer alternative by reducing process quantities and perhaps even allows local production at the site of the end users. Central question of the project is how safe-by-design opportunities for sustainable production can objectively be evaluated in terms of the complex optimization of safety,sustainability, cost-effectiveness, robustness, flexibility, regulatory compliance, and stakeholder interaction and acceptance.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate in Advanced additive solutions for mechanical recycling of polyolefin blends
The Circular Plastics research group at Maastricht University is looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate to join our team in understanding and developing additive-based solutions for the recycling of polyolefin blends.
Understanding the material and processing stability is extremely important for producing high-quality products from recycled polyolefins like PE and PP. To date, effective European recycling rates of polyolefins are stuck at around 40%, and one of the main bottlenecks is an understanding of how these polymers – often cross-contaminated with each other – behave and interact during the recycling process. The degradation behavior of recyclates can differ considerably from those observed in virgin polymers. The combination of different discarded plastics during recycling, each one containing distinct additives, can hamper or enhance the thermo-oxidative stability of the final recyclate compared to the initial stability of the unblended plastics. Despite their central role, stabilizer additives have not been systematically characterized in recycled plastics when they undergo re-processing. This issue is even more challenging considering the cross-contamination among stabilizers and other additives. Motivated by such questions, the proposed study aims to explore the physicochemical interactions between different stabilizers in recycled PP and PE blends and the effect of re-stabilization of recycled polymers.
