PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND/INTEGRATED PHD STIPEND IN COMPUTATIONAL MATERIALS CHEMISTRY

A PhD stipend or integrated PhD stipend in computational materials chemistry is available. Development of new sustainable energy materials is required for our transition to a carbon neutral society. Computational materials chemistry allows to accelerate the design and discovery of new materials, but often important effects of temperature and disorder are neglected. This PhD project will take advantage of new developments in machine learning and finite temperature modelling to design materials for energy applications, such as solid-state electrolytes for batteries.

The prospective PhD student should have an interest in working in a collaborative team with a common focus on computational materials science. The research project will focus on developing and applying new computational methods for simulating properties and stability of inorganic materials at finite temperature to design and discover new materials for energy application.

The PhD Student will be part of the computational materials chemistry group led by Tenure-Track Assistant Professor, Kasper Tolborg, within the Section for Disordered Materials, which offers state-of-the-art computational and experimental infrastructure and facilitates interdisciplinary collaborations.

A relevant educational background within Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Condensed Matter Physics, or similar is necessary. Excellent oral and written English language skills are a requirement. We seek a candidate with strong competences in materials science/chemistry, excellent analytical skills, and proficiency in scientific programming,(e.g. in python). Experience with machine learning, electronic structure calculations and/or molecular dynamics simulations is highly advantageous.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN SAFE MACHINE INTELLIGENCE FOR OPTIMAL DECISION MAKING

In line with the commitment to building a theoretical foundation of safe reinforcement learning, we are looking for a highly motivated and talented PhD student to join our team. The position is a part of the SAFEMig Project. The project aims to develop efficient and safe RL algorithms with provable guarantees.

An autonomous system uses its senses(physical measurements) to learn about a physical environment. These decisions are taken to reach a specific goal based on the observed environment. At each time, an action is taken. It influences possible future states which are uncertain due to stochastic disturbances.  To take an optimal decision means to take an action that gives the best expected outcome. This is the so-called stochastic optimization. Some decisions may bring the autonomous system into unsafe or hazardous conditions, where the people’s health and equipment are endangered. Specifically, the notion of safety to be developed in the project will characterize the risk of entering an unsafe situation. We examine two concepts of safety: probabilistic safety and fatigue safety. Probabilistic safety is the probability of reaching hazardous states at most once, whereas fatigue safety allows rare visits to hazardous states. To characterize the level of safety, we define safety metrics. Subsequently, we develop numerically tractable methods for computing safety. The level of safety can be managed by taking proper decisions. The trade-off between safety and greediness are assessed using stochastic constrained optimization.

PhD position summary/title: 1-2 PHD POSITIONS IN COMPARATIVE FAMILY LAW

The Nordic Centre for Comparative and International Family Law(NorFam) at Aalborg University is looking for 1-2 PhD students in comparative and/or international family law(either by thesis or by publication). The position is funded by NordForsk(www.NordForsk.org) with an aim to promote comparative family law research. The proposed topic therefore must be in the area of comparative family law, broadly understood. In line with NorFam’s mission and the Centre’s current requirements, it would be preferred if the PhD was written in the English language but also contained a strong Danish element. Because the position is attached to NorFam and its projects, the applicant therefore must be fluent in English as well as in Danish and hold a Danish law degree. Ideally, the applicant must have undertaken previous study/research in the areas of family law and particularly comparative family law. Additional language skills are considered a bonus.

The PhD will be supervised by Prof Jens Scherpe, the Director of NorFam. The successful applicant will become a full member of NorFam and will also be centrally involved in the administration of the Centre and its research projects, especially the collaboration with the Nordic partners. Extended research stays at other Nordic and/or international institutions are intended to be part of the PhD project. Participation in the teaching of national and international family and succession law, comparative family and succession law as well as in related subjects is expected. The successful applicant will also be expected to participate in international conferences and organisations as advised by the supervisor.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPENDS IN SAFE MACHINE LEARNING FOR CONTROL

The project addresses the fundamental question of how to trust a neural network that controls a dynamical system. Since neural networks are large black boxes, we need both automatic methods to analyze such systems and human-interpretable certificates of the analysis results. We will devise automatic and sound methods to respectively certify correctness and incorrectness of neural-network controllers. We will also develop a framework that integrates these methods for constructing correct-by-design controllers. Methodologically, we shall investigate how traditional computer-science techniques for verification and falsification as well as machine learning can be tailored to these goals. This way, the project lays the grounds toward safe AI control systems.

PhD position summary/title: TWO PHD STIPENDS IN LCA FOR THE CIRCULAR BIOECONOMY

The PhD stipends are financed by different innovation projects on the development of new technologies to strengthen the development of a circular bioeconomy in the EU.

The PhD student will join the Danish Centre for Environmental Assessment(DCEA) and will collaborate with other international research partners. DCEA is an interdisciplinary and inclusive research group working with environmental assessment, its researchers have a variety of backgrounds ranging from environmental science and engineering to economics and sociology.

The objective of the projects will be to assess– in a life cycle perspective– the sustainability and circularity of new emerging technologies for valorizing plant biomass from land(forest, crops, residues) and algal biomass from the sea(seaweed, macroalgae) in integrated value chains, from primary production to processing into innovative products and services and including the end of life. The PhD students will contribute to developing advanced Life Cycle Assessment(LCA) approaches for biobased products and test them on real-world case studies in collaboration with international industry and research partners. The research will focus on answering prospective questions regarding the availability of land- and sea-based biomass in the future and regarding the environmental performance of emerging technologies to harvest and exploit such biomass when scaled up and integrated into an industrial setting. This analysis requires the combined application of qualitative and quantitative approaches to identify and describe future technological and resource availability scenarios, to understand and quantify the impacts of new technologies, and to work extensively with uncertainty analysis.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND/INTEGRATED PHD STIPEND IN ENZYMATIC BIOELECTROSYNTHESIS

A PhD stipend/Integrated PhD Stipend is available in the topic of enzymatic bioelectrosynthesis. Enzymatic bioelectrosynthesis is an emerging field of using relatively-cheap electricity to drive biocatalysis reactions for the synthesis of high value-added molecules. Reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide, i.e., NADH, is a very common electron donor used in many biological processes. NADH dependent enzymes are versatile to catalyze many useful reduction reactions. In this context, electrochemical NADH regeneration holds the key for enzymatic bioelectrosynthesis. This position is announced as part of the project called“Enzymatic Bioelectrosynthesis for Developing Novel Pharmaceuticals” funded by a Novo Nordisk Foundation Start Package grant with the aim of establishing a compact system for electrochemical NADH regeneration and enabled chiral molecule synthesis.

The PhD student will follow courses according to the university’s PhD program. The candidate is also expected to engage in teaching and be involved in project-based student supervision within the section. All educational programs at Aalborg University are based on Problem Based Learning, with projects making up half the teaching at all semesters. For more information seewww.en.bio.aau.dk
