PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Deep Learning Theory and Differential Geometry – DTU Compute

As our new PhD Student, your task will be to study modern deep learning approaches and develop a theoretical understanding based on differential geometry. In particular, deep neural networks perform surprisingly well on new unseen data, which is known as generalization. However, previous machine learning theory cannot fully explain this behavior and thus new approaches have emerged. A promising explanation is that during the training phase, the models are implicitly regularized which is attributed to the properties of the optimization technique. Intuitively, an example is that stochastic optimizers tend to find flatter minima in the complex loss landscape which is supposed to correlate with generalization. The behavior of the neural network also depends on the architectural choices and the additional training techniques applied during the learning phase. The goal of this project is to approach these concepts using differential geometry, providing a new theoretical framework and developing practical methodologies accordingly.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship on the Sorption, Leaching and Persistence of Organic Pollutants Released from Biochar – DTU Sustain

Biochar is a carbon-rich material that is made through a thermochemical conversion process known as pyrolysis. The feed material for the pyrolysis is typically plant material but can also be sludge from Wastewater Treatment Plants or the digestate from Biogas Plants. There are many uses for biochar including soil amendment, water treatment, and carbon sequestration. This PhD project focuses on the presence, desorption and persistence of organic pollutants in biochars. If you want to contribute to safe environmental applications of biochars then DTU Sustain offers you the opportunity to conduct an interesting and challenging environmental chemistry research project.

Biochars can contain different organic chemicals that either originate from the feedstock or the pyrolysis process, and biochars can thus potentially be contaminant sources when applied and spread in the environment. On the other hand, the pyrolytic process can remove organic chemicals, enhance the sorptive properties of the carbon matrix and consequently reduce the leaching of organic chemicals relative to the feed material. Biochars are increasingly employed as sorbents for removing chemicals from water, soils and sediments, where they then act as a contaminant sink rather than as a contaminant source. It is well known that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be formed during the pyrolysis process, and there has been a considerable amount of biochar research on the PAH content, sorption, release and exposure. This PhD project will address (1) the removal/formation of more organic pollutants during the pyrolytic conversion, (2) the effect of the pyrolytic conversion on the KD values that govern the soil to water distribution and thus leaching and (3) the biodegradability and persistence of those organic contaminants that are present in biochar and potentially can leach. Advanced analytical methods will be applied for the targeted and non-targeted analysis of polar and non-polar organic pollutants.

We seek a curious and independent PhD candidate willing to work on the “Sorption, Leaching and Persistence of Organic Pollutants Released from Biochar”. This 3-year PhD scholarship is part of the larger collaborative research project “Investigation of environmental issues related to the production and use of biochar” between DTU Chemical Engineering (Lead), DTU Sustain, Aarhus University and Roskilde University, which is funded by the Danish EPA.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Data-Enabled Heating Optimisation in Apartment Buildings – DTU Construct

District Heating companies are urgently undergoing a transition towards using large heat pumps and low-temperature heat sources. The success of this shift largely depends on the reduction of supply temperatures in district heating networks due to their significant effect on the Coefficient of Performance (COP) of heat pumps. However, the transition is hindered by apartment buildings that maintain unnecessarily high operating temperatures through their heating pipes, necessitating network operators to set their supply temperatures high enough to accommodate these apartments’ demands.

Addressing this issue and reducing these temperatures could result in annual savings of around 14 billion euros within the EU and between 300 to 350 million euros in Denmark, making this an extremely high-priority task.

In collaboration with leading heat-invoicing companies, our project intends to resolve this problem by tapping into extensive datasets from the digital heat cost allocators (HCAs) already in use in apartment buildings. These devices, which are mounted on radiators, measure heat output and wirelessly transmit the data. Over a hundred million HCAs have been installed worldwide, and the EU requires their near-universal implementation by 2027.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarships (3) in Machine Learning Metamodeling Architectures for Scientific Simulation – DTU Management

We offer 3 PhD positions in the Artificial Intelligence for Policy Excellence in the Climate Crisis (APEX) project at the Technical University of Denmark, focused on developing a Machine Learning approximations for simulators (also known as ML metamodels). Such approximations have the potential of vastly accelerating simulation studies, and supporting applications in many important contexts, including transport, energy, environment, material science, physics and any other domain where scientific simulation is important.

More often than not, simulation tools are extremely complex and slow to run. If we also consider that they may have many parameters and input data (with uncertainty) to consider, we quickly arrive to the conclusion that most of the times, we can only access a tiny portion of their true potential. This dilemma affects our lives in many ways. In particular, for policy decision making (e.g. transport policy), it prevents us from exhaustively searching for the best parameters (e.g. how much should a vehicle tax be? Should we build a new bridge/metro/road? What should the bus ticket price be?).

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Computational Thermodynamics of Emulsion Properties – DTU Chemical Engineering

PhD scholarship in computational thermodynamics of emulsion properties. You will use first-principles methods to predict complex phase diagrams for surfactant-based systems to accurately describe emulsion behaviour as a function of composition, temperature and salinity.

Emulsions form the basis of products used by millions of people in their day-to-day life. Despite the large use of emulsion-based products (e.g. cosmetics, paint, food, and pharmaceuticals), formulating emulsions is time consuming and expensive, often resorting to trial-and-error approaches. Reliable first-principles methods for prediction of the entire phase diagram are lacking, because of the complexity of the system. Predictive methods exist but are often too computationally intensive to cover the whole parameter space, like molecular dynamics-based methods, or too inaccurate for emulsions, like group contribution methods.

If one could shorten the time to find the optimal composition for a desired emulsion formulation, this could vastly improve the efficiency of formulated product development in a range of industrial settings. In this project, we aim to develop a fast and robust method for predicting full emulsion phase diagrams based on density functional theory and the COSMO-RS implicit solvent model, allowing prediction of emulsion properties from first-principles.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Structural Enzymology of polyurethanases – DTU Bioengineering

Plastic pollution is a major environmental problem caused by the accumulation of plastic waste in the natural environment. The global production of plastic has increased rapidly over the past few decades, with 380 million tonnes per annum. Around 70% of global production is concentrated in six major polymer types, the so-called commodity plastics. These materials are inexpensive, versatile and easy to work with, making them the preferred choice for the mass production of everyday objects. Our research is particularly focused on polyurethane (PUR) that is considered an adaptable material and can be found a wide range of applications, including insulation, adhesives, coatings, and foams. The poor degradability of this material brought the scientific community in finding new solutions to harness the problem and, as in many other cases, enzymes revealed to be the leading players in this challenge.

Framed in this context, in our research we are focused on finding enzyme candidates capable of degrading polyurethane fragments specifically attacking the scissile bond intrinsic of the polymer chemical structure. Among the copious amount of enzyme classes, the broad family of  amidases has caught our attention since their reaction with polyurethane would produce two fragments being a carbonyl and an amine moieties that could be recycled as valuable building blocks. The recently established NNF funded “Centre for enzymatic deconstruction of thermoset plastics for a sustainable society (En’Zync)” is seeking to identify, characterize, and describe enzymes that are capable of degrading thermoset plastics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship in Tensor Networks for Machine Learning – DTU Compute

Are you interested in developing novel machine learning methodologies that are scalable, reliable and explainable and that can address imminent challenges both within quantum physics and the life-sciences?

As our new colleague, your job will be to develop novel computational frameworks for machine learning by use of tensor network representations. In particular, you will push the boundaries of

  • Scalability, drawing upon recent large-scale TN capabilities in physics.
  • Reliability, exploring uncertainty quantification and robust inference in machine learning
  • Explainability, leveraging identifiability and unique recovery explored using tensor decompositions within the life-science domain.

A Tensor Network (TN) is a data structure for representing high-dimensional arrays (tensors) in a low-rank format as a sequence of smaller cores, which can be stored and manipulated efficiently. TNs provide promising tools for large-scale machine learning, as they allow for exponential savings in memory and processing time, while often allowing for explainable structure extraction. However, key obstacles remain, preventing their widespread use. These include limitations in terms of reliable large-scale inference, uncertainty quantification, as well as efficient TN structure identification, assessment, and interpretation. You will address these obstacles and demonstrate how the developed tools can address important challenges within quantum physics as well as large-scale life-science data modeling.
