PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship – Turning up the heat on soil carbon: Quantifying carbon dynamics and climate resilience of agave production in Mexico

“Climate change is one of the most significant challenges facing the world today, and agriculture is both a contributor to and a casualty of climate change. The impact of agriculture on the environment has been increasingly scrutinised, as it is responsible for 13% of global greenhouse gas emissions. However, regenerative farming offers a promising solution to reduce the impact of agriculture on climate change and increase the resilience of farming systems to climate change impacts. Our recent work has demonstrated substantial benefits for adopting regenerative practices in terms of long-term climate resilience. However, the benefits and trade-offs from such transitions are poorly quantified, and there remains little understanding of how such changes can contribute to the decarbonisation and increased sustainability of supply chains.

Agave is an important crop that underpins the tequila supply chain. Agricultural production can have substantial adverse environmental impacts, including soil degradation, challenges with water availability and significant greenhouse gas emissions. Regenerative agriculture describes a range of more sustainable farming practices and is of growing interest across the agriculture sector due to its potential to bring multiple benefits through carbon sequestration and storage in soils, benefits to biodiversity, and increased climate resilience. Regenerative practices have significant potential in agave production, but benefits are poorly quantified, particularly in terms of impacts on yield and carbon storage, and little is known about how these will impact supply chains or smallholder farmer livelihoods. This project addresses this challenge.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship: Carbon dynamics of the Pantanal, the World’s largest wetland

“The Pantanal, Brazil, is the world’s largest wetland ecosystem and a significant carbon sink, and has been proposed a key potential nature-based solution to climate change. It features a range of vegetation types, from woodlands through to lakes, grasslands and pasture for livestock, and is a global biodiversity hotspot, as well as carbon. At the same time, evidence suggests that greenhouse gas emissions from tropical wetlands are increasing, driven by a combination of agricultural expansion and intensification, and climate change impacts. There is therefore a critical need to understand drivers of carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas dynamics, across land use and management regimes, and quantify the future resilience of stored carbon. In this project, you will work to address this challenge.
The overarching aim of this project is to produce new estimates of carbon storage in soils and vegetation across key ecosystem types, and management regimes in the Pantanal, quantify the potential scale of greenhouse gas dynamics, and identify controls over emissions.
You will integrate a range of ecological and biogeochemical techniques, working closely with a range of collaborators in Brazil (including the Federal University of Mato Grosso and Embrapa Pantanal) and the UK throughout the project, as well as presenting your research at UK and international conferences. You will have a unique opportunity to conduct and lead on-the-ground research in the Pantanal, a global hotspot for biodiversity and carbon storage.
You will also receive extensive training in a range of field and lab-based methodologies, as well as transferable skills in presenting, data analysis, and stakeholder engagement. You will be joining a growing and welcoming research group, with multiple opportunities for networking, collaboration, and professional development.”

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship: Discovery of enzymes for plastic degradation

Plastic is a valuable material for a wide range of industrial applications. Polyethylene (PE) is one of the most used plastics, is readily available, light weight and durable. However, PE takes thousands of years to degrade in the environment, leading to a high environmental impact. It is therefore vital that plastic is collected and repurposed back in a circular economy. Similarly, current recycling methods (chemical or mechanical) progressively deteriorate the properties of the material, with the plastic eventually reaching a stage where it can no longer be recycled using current methods and must be disposed of.

We isolated an organism from the environment capable of degrading PE in fermentation at a scale that has not previously been reported.

The aim of this PhD project is to address the plastic degradation challenge by investigating the processes and enzymes utilised by the isolated organism in the PE-degradation process. Building up from our previous studies, the successful candidate will identify, express and test the activity of a series of enzyme candidates. Suitable methods for testing the enzymatic activity will be developed over the course of the PhD and the enzymes will be characterised via a variety of analytical methods (e.g. biochemical assays, mass-spectrometry,

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship: Design and fabrication of multi-metal components for nuclear fusion applications

The vision for next-generation Additive Manufacturing (AM) is to control the composition of every deposited volume to make functional materials (FMs) directly from digital designs. These FMs could replace assemblies that are currently made by joining multiple components and could also significantly enhance performance by engineering the mechanical properties at small scale.  For fusion energy, the most immediate application of this technology will be in the creation of two-metal parts (e.g., W-Cu) that can act as either plasma facing components or heat-transfer interfaces.

The objective of this PhD project is to address the knowledge gap around metallic FMs and establish new design methods for multi-metal AM. To achieve this, the project will focus on determining the structural and thermal behaviour of the interface regions of the printed component, where dissimilar materials are in contact

PhD position summary/title:  PhD Studentship: Impact Failure of Amorphous Polymers

Ballistic impact is a complex event that induces multiple modes of deformation, is influenced by both material and structural responses, and excites a very wide range of strain rates. In cases where brittle failure is induced, effects of processing history, such as flaws and residual stresses, also play a significant role in the final response. A thorough understanding of a material’s response to impact is essential to control damage and prevent injuries in a broad range of contexts.

There is a need, therefore, to produce material models that can be used in computer simulations of ballistic events, and which contain enough physical understanding of deformation and failure behaviour to provide insight into how processing affects the final response. This project will address this problem through a combination of modelling at the University of Nottingham and experimental development at the University of Oxford, using polycarbonate as a model material. The ultimate goal is to provide models to understand and simulate phenomena observed in polymers under impact, and the effect of different polymer histories on these phenomena. This builds on current collaborative research, in which a new rate and temperature dependent constitutive model has been developed, by focusing on understanding the basic polymer physics that drives fracture.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship: Metal Additive Manufacturing of Multi-Functional and Multi-Material Structures

The Centre for Additive Manufacturing (CfAM) Research Group within the Faculty of Engineering and the University of Nottingham, acknowledged as one of the world’s leading centres for Additive Manufacturing research, development, and dissemination, invites applications for a 3-year PhD programme.

A cutting-edge bespoke Drop-on-demand Metal Jetting platform, recently developed at CfAM, allows the printing of components from various metals in a single piece. This involves coordinating the jetting of dissimilar materials on a base substrate, enabling the direct creation of components with spatially varied compositions. Distinguishing itself on the global stage, this multi-material printing system stands as the first of its kind, boasting the capacity to print dual materials in a voxel-by-voxel fashion at a resolution of less than 50 µm. This intricate capability opens avenues for manufacturing complex designs, setting a new standard in the realm of 3D printing.

We seek a student who could lead the maturation of this multi-metal MetalJet technique, which offers substantial prospects in the direct manufacturing of multi-functional metallic structures. The successful candidate will develop a comprehensive understanding of the Drop-on-demand Metal Jetting process and the compatibility of dissimilar materials within the printed structure. There is a particular interest in exploring novel designs and manufacturing techniques for cartridges used in producing molten droplets. An ideal candidate should have experience or a strong interest in additive manufacturing, materials science, and computational mechanics but also be adaptable to learning and exploring new disciplines as the project evolves.

PhD position summary/title:  PhD Opportunity in Crafting Hybrid Perovskites for Photochemical Supercapacitors

Hybrid perovskites are gaining increasing attention for energy conversion and storage due to the application potential of hybrid perovskites being controlled by cations in sublattice sites which correlates with the amount of oxygen (O2) σ*- antibonding and the degree of B-site transition metal–Ocovalency. The fabrication of hybrid perovskites via different materials processing routes offers the opportunity for structural tunability and modification of their optical, electronic, and chemical properties via defect chemistry.

Accordingly, this project aims to develop new materials processing methods to produce a new class of two-dimensional hybrid perovskite composites with tailorable features via bottom-up synthetic routes. Using a combination of diffraction, microscopic and spectroscopic tools, structure-function relationships will be determined. The proposed methodology offers control and flexibility to bridge the materials discovery gap while tackling scientific questions related to the interaction between sustainable inorganic components, physicochemical properties (i.e., defects, structure, etc.) and their influence on energy scavenging via photoelectrochemical effects.

We are excited to offer a PhD studentship within the Low Carbon Energy and Resources Technologies Research Group in the Faculty of Engineering, focusing on the innovative field of CO2-negative technologies for industrial decarbonisation i.e. Chemical Looping Combustion (CLC) and Gasification (CLG) of Biofuels. This project is pivotal in contributing to negative CO2 emissions, aligning with global environmental goals. The student will have access to world-class facilities and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team with expertise in areas such as reactor design, reaction engineering, metal oxide nanocomposites, and CO2 capture technologies.

PhD Project Description: With the growing concern over climate change, there is an urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This project will explore the potential of biofuels as a carbon dioxide-neutral fuel and their combustion/gasification using chemical looping technologies. The research will encompass various scales, from lab experiments to pilot scale, focusing on different low-cost oxygen carriers to advanced oxygen carriers and biofuel types. The project aims to develop novel CO2-negative chemical looping technologies and optimise operation parameters for maximum CO2 capture efficiency and energy gain, contributing to the development of Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) technologies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship- Project Title: The Importance of Muscle Stem Cells: Implications for Muscle Repair in Inflammation and Trauma

Skeletal muscle possesses a remarkable capacity for adaptation and repair, processes essential in the maintenance of skeletal muscle health. The ability of skeletal muscle to respond to stimuli such as exercise, injury and trauma, is in part, due to muscle resident stem (satellite) cells (MuSC). The interaction of MuSC with adjacent structures and other cell types, in addition to their exposure to various inflammatory cytokines and growth factors all influence how MuSC behave and respond to different stimuli, like exercise, trauma and injury.

Recent evidence indicates a reduction in the number of MuSC during the menopause transition, which characterised by a sudden decrease in oestrogen production. Importantly, it has also been shown that oestrogen receptors are present on MuSC’s suggesting that the presence/absence of oestrogen can impact MuSC function and thus, the muscle repair process.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship: Elucidating the role of lipids in fibrotic capsule formation at the surface of implanted medical devices.

Implanted medical devices are crucial in healthcare, valued at around £400 billion globally, however there is a high failure rate, often due to the foreign body reaction, where a fibrotic capsule forms around the implant with associated inflammation, loosening and infection. Currently the methods to combat foreign body reaction focus on preventing protein buildup to avoid immune activation, but this hasn’t successfully prevented capsule formation in the clinic.

However, in March 2023, a new theory suggested that the presence of lipids on the surface of the implant could influence the foreign body reaction. Also, that the types of material used for implants control their presence at their surfaces and how these fats influence the immune response. Specific phospholipids and free fatty acids have been linked to preventing or promoting the formation of fibrotic capsules respectively. [Schreib et al Advanced Materials 2023]

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship: Pain increases disability; disability increases pain: Understanding the vicious cycle.

Arthritis affects 10 million people in the UK, and is on the rise. Many do not respond adequately to treatment. Pain is the main symptom, a leading cause of disability and worsens the risk of developing other health issues. Reducing pain alone often does not improve disability, and treatments are needed that address both pain and disability.

Our research indicates that pain severity and the associated central nervous system (CNS) dysfunction are linked to current and future physical inactivity. They lead to muscle weakness, mass loss and impaired neuromuscular control. Factors related to the CNS may explain the connection between pain and disability. Addressing the shared risk factors could efficiently reduce both.

This studentship will explore how CNS links pain with disability. The student will evaluate current evidence by systematic literature review, interview individuals to examine their experiences and beliefs of the interaction between pain and disability, and develop a study measuring patient-reported and quantitative pain outcomes, muscle dysfunction and disability.

PhD position summary/title:  PhD Studentship: Pectin supplementation to reduce gut and systemic inflammation and improve liver, muscle and gastrointestinal outcomes.

A quarter of the world’s population has metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease, (which used to be known as non-alcoholic fatty liver disease). It is a major cause of liver damage, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular diseases. As it gets worse, scarring in the liver, leaky gut, and inflammation can happen, which can cause muscle loss and wasting. This is called sarcopenia, and it happens when there is systemic inflammation and changes in protein metabolism. It makes people’s health and strength worse overall. Colorectal cancer patients also lose significant amounts of mass and have a high levels of inflammation, both of which are linked to worse long-term health and survival.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship: Understanding and enhancing the physiological resilience of older adults to improve health-span: a focus on skeletal muscle.

Drug repurposing is an emerging avenue of research in the field of Geroscience; a field whose stated aim is to “accelerate reseach into the basic mechanisms driving ageing which could lead to improved clinical interventions”. Based at the University of Nottingham Medical School at Derby (UNMSD; Royal Derby Hospital Centre), this PhD is focussed on exploring the impact of an already-licensed mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) inhibitor (which has been shown to attenuate sarcopenia in animal models of ageing) on muscle growth and function in both community-dwelling older adults and orthogeriatric patients. Results from this PhD will inform on the potential of mTOR inhibition to enhance the resilience of older adults, not only in relation to skeletal muscle but also other organ systems for which favourable pre-clinical data is emerging (i.e., the immune system). As is the case for all of these PhD’s, the successful candidate will learn a wealth of skills relating to human physiology studies/clinical trials and state-of-the-art wet-lab techniques.
