PhD position summary/title: PhD studentship: Development of translational cancer cell and tissue models to study anticancer drug response and resistance
Are you interested in learning how to model cancer and examine the response to therapies? In preclinical drug discovery it is crucial to use the most relevant cellular models to mimic the disease for drug testing. This project focuses on advancing cellular model systems to study the efficacy of anticancer drugs and to understand how different cell types impact therapy outcome and drug resistance.
Tumour cells constantly interact with their surrounding tumour microenvironment, including cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs). CAFs support cancer progression and can also hamper anticancer drug efficacy. Standard 2D tumour cell cultures often fail to replicate the tumour microenvironment crosstalk, while more complex models are too elaborate for high-throughput drug screening.
In this PhD project, you will assess and establish different culture systems, including 3D co-cultures and primary patient samples, for drug discovery. You will use these models to characterize anticancer drugs and determine the impact of non-cancerous cell types. You will also investigate how therapies alter the phenotypes of fibroblasts themselves.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship Rule-based Clinical Decision System Supporting Parkinson’s Decision-Making.
Healthcare decision-making is a complex and important process. It is relevant to have a tool that helps with accurate and crucial decisions based on clinical data. Each stage has a vital decision to be made depending on other stages’ decisions. Thus, a clinical decision support system (CDSS) model based on a data mining approach becomes a leading solution.
Clinical decision support systems (CDSSs) have been recommended for their potential to reduce medical errors and influence the quality and safety of health care.
The PhD project will develop and design a medical platform to assist clinicians in their clinical reasoning in their treatment of Parkinson’s disease. The system uses multi-modal data from multiple sources to support and enhance clinical decision making.
We invite applicants interested in: Decision Support, Machine Learning, Health, Wellbeing and Care, Human-Computer Interaction. We encourage a problem solving, analytical approach, and excitement to work in the intersection of Mathematics, Computing and Medical Sciences.

PhD Studentship in Computing Science: Understanding Decisions of Machine Learning Models with Explorable Explanations
This project focuses on explorable explanations for ML models and lies at the cross-section of interactive visualisation and AI explainability research. It aims to develop a software that allows to explore, investigate, and discover how the machine learning models make decisions.
The classic visualisation techniques, designed for paper, and still prevalent in science, do not expose the system behaviour in a way that encourages exploration. We are often “computer users thinking paper thoughts”. But if we want to make better science, we need to go beyond static visualisation and provide ways to interactively explore the behaviour of computational models. This is especially important when model decisions cannot be blindly trusted (e.g. in medical applications).
The successful applicant will join the Interdisciplinary Computing and Complex BioSystems group in the School of Computing at Newcastle University. The group specialises in interdisciplinary research at the interface of computing science and natural and synthetic complex systems (e.g. in biology or health care), and has expertise in scientific computing and machine intelligence. You will have a chance to work alongside other researches developing next generation algorithms to gain insights from real-world data, and will obtain training in independent problem solving, scientific software development, and science communication.

PhD position summary/title: PhD studentship in Computer Science: Quantum digital signatures and quantum formal methods
Interested in understanding the interplay between computer science and physics in the field of quantum technologies? Working in collaboration with various universities (Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, Edinburgh, King’s College London, Middlesex) across UK, this PhD will investigate computer science techniques for the development of quantum security systems.
Information security is critical and cryptographic techniques such as digital signatures are used for validating the authenticity and integrity of messages, software or digital documents. Quantum digital signatures are crypto-techniques that uses the laws of quantum physics to provide security that cannot be broken even if the adversary has unlimited computing power.
This PhD will involve in developing novel quantum digital signature protocols, and verifying the security of the protocols using a branch in computer science known as formal methods. The success of formal methods in classical computing – they are ubiquitous e.g. in software development – led to the development of quantum formal methods, which helps to describe and analyse systems that combine quantum and classical elements. Previous research in quantum formal techniques focused on analysing realistic quantum information processing systems, to gain an understanding of concurrent and communicating quantum systems, and importantly to support the future development of tools for verifying the correctness of more complex quantum technologies.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship in Computer Science: Incentivizing Participation in Privacy-Enhancing Technologies
Privacy-Enhancing Technologies (PETs), such as Secure Multi-party Computation (MPC) and Federated Learning (FL) allow parties to collaboratively analyze a collection of data partitions where each data partition is contributed by a different party (such as banks, or law enforcement agencies). Two facts about most PETs exist: (i) the output of PETs reveals some information about the parties’ private input sets (i.e., the computation result in FL or MPC), and (ii) various variants of PETs do not output the result to all parties, even in those PETs that do, not all of the parties are necessarily interested in it. Given these facts, a natural question arises: How can we incentivize parties that do not receive the result or do not express interest in it to participate in PETs?
This project aims to develop new PETs that incentivize participants to share their sensitive data by fairly rewarding them. Additionally, the project aims to ensure these PETs remain secure even when adversaries compromise some parties. The Secure and Resilient Systems research group will host the successful candidate at the Urban Science Building, Newcastle University

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship in Computer Science: Computational Modelling of Individualised Therapies and Treatment Responses in Psoriasis
Psoriasis vulgaris is a systemic immune-mediated inflammatory disease affecting 2–3% of the world population. It manifests itself as red scaly plaques distributed over the whole skin, causing significant disability and impairment to quality of life. The pathophysiology of psoriasis is complex, multi-factorial and thought to be triggered through environmental genetic interactions. For example, psoriasis can be triggered in response to innate or environmental stimuli (e.g., injury, infection, or certain behavioural patterns).
Psoriasis is a chronic disease but may undergo periods of remission; currently though there is no cure. There are various therapies (e.g., narrow-band ultraviolet B (UVB) photo-therapy, biologics, etc.) that can achieve psoriasis clearance and induce a period of remission. Nevertheless, relapse is common, occurring in 70% of patients within 6 months from the end of the therapy.
Many computational models of the disease progression and responses to therapies were designed over the years. Some of them explore interactions between keratinocytes and the immune system in healthy and psoriatic epidermis. Others model the connection between the epidermis dynamics and patients’ response to therapies measured via Psoriasis Area and Severity Index (PASI). This project will explore various modelling aspects of psoriasis by building new (and improving existing) models of healthy and psoriatic epidermis, individualised responses to therapies, psoriasis remission and relapse, circadian rhythms, etc.

PhD position summary/title: Identifying the efficacy of medical dermatology therapies using artificial intelligence. National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Patient Safety Research Collaborative (PSRC) PhD studentship.
This studentship will be based in The Newcastle NIHR Patient Safety Research Collaborative (PSRC), this research theme embraces the exceptional capacity of artificial intelligence (AI) to spot patterns in vast collections of electronic health records (http://ai-multiply.co.uk/). Our primary objective is discerning risk patterns at both population and individual patient levels, providing a new lens to view and understand patient health. Key areas of focus will include understanding the trajectories and care pathways of MLTCs in Medical Dermatology.
Four of the most common Medical Dermatology diseases are eczema, psoriasis, hidradenitis suppurativa and acne. We have developed standard ways to treat these conditions but not all patients respond, and some patients develop side effects. If we could identify which patients respond well to certain therapies, and which patients develop side effects with therapies, we could improve the quality of care by providing optimal treatment choices with the lowest risk of side effects (SE). Better knowledge of treatment responses and SE may also allow us to reduce unnecessary clinic visits and tests, thereby improving the efficiency of the NHS.
We will investigate whether we can predict which patients are more likely to respond to therapy or develop SE using AI. A range of AI models will be tested. Additionally, we recognise the importance of “explainable AI”, which helps us understand the “inner workings” of such models. We will therefore determine which patient factors contribute to making these predictions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship – Process Industries: Net Zero Low GWP working fluids for Thermosyphons
This PhD project will investigate the use of low GWP working fluids for Thermosyphons. Thermosyphons are a high efficiency cooling solution employed in various applications, ranging from green power generation to the cooling of high powered electronics. They are a passive device: in the most basic form they consist of an evacuated sealed tube which is partially filled with a working fluid. The working fluid evaporates at the bottom when subjected to a thermal load, and condenses at the top end. Hence, heat is transferred from source to sink without the need of external pumping at very high transport rates, dictated by two-phase heat transfer at both ends of the pipe.
Developments in working fluids for thermosyphons has stalled in recent years, with high GWP fluids still common place. In this project, the candidate will perform thermodynamic analysis to shortlist and assess a variety of environmentally friendly working fluids (including mixtures) before undertaking rigorous experimental testing to validate the thermodynamic models. This may necessitate the improvement of existing, industry-standard, design models and correlations.
The project within PINZ CDT is partly funded jointly supervised by Sterling Thermal Technologies Limited. Sterling TT are a UK Heat Exchanger designer and manufacturer serving companies around the glove with high-quality, bespoke heat transfer solutions. They deliver solutions across a range of sectors crucial for Net Zero including renewables and power distribution. Sterling have committed significant funds to the development of a state-of-the-art experimental test rig for this project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Studentship – Process Industries: Net Zero 3D Heat Pipe Technology
This PhD project will develop next generation 3D Heat Pipes for Space Applications, to maximise thermal transport efficiency within advanced electronics for space and terrestrial applications.
Vapour chambers and loop heat pipes are proposed for development into a 3D format. Vapour chambers are ultra-thin heat pipes used to rapidly spread heat in the x-y plane. They have various applications in electronics cooling/heat spreading in space and terrestrial applications. 3D vapour chambers are a recent advancement combining a state-of-art 2D vapour chamber with a traditional heat pipe structure to allow heat spreading and dissipation across all 3 dimensions. Loop heat pipes incorporate a complex evaporator with flexible transport lines, that require development for utilisation in a 3D environment. This project will focus on the advancement of vapour chambers and loop heat pipes into 3 dimensional environments.
Potential applications include in-orbit satellite applications, where maximising thermal performance of waste heat transport from discrete, high heat flux heat sources is paramount, and aerospace applications where the geometry between the heat dissipating source and the heat sink may be tortuous. Other applications include battery pack cooling, cooling of PEM fuel cells and various other key enabling technologies in the drive to net zero.
