Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow in Cardiovascular Metabolism
An early change in cardiac metabolism is considered a major culprit for diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM). The metabolic shift in the diabetic heart includes reduced glucose consumption, and a switch to utilize more fatty acids for energy, a destructive adaptation implicated in cell death and DCM. The Rodrigues Lab is interested in examining the mechanism of how fatty acids are provided to the heart and how an excess can lead to cardiac disease. Appreciating this mechanism should allow the identification of novel targets for therapeutic intervention to prevent heart failure during diabetes.
A full-time postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Dr. Brian Rodrigues, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences, UBC. The individual will be responsible for the design and execution of research projects involved in investigating the switch in cardiac energy supply (from glucose to fatty acid) following diabetes. Applicants must therefore have extensive knowledge and experience in various lab techniques to investigate cardiac metabolism, using animal modeling, cell culture (primary endothelial cells and cardiomyocyte isolation), molecular biology, and biochemistry.
Applicants should have a PhD in pharmacology, biochemistry, or a related field with relevant experience. You will be expected to take the lead role in your projects, to publish manuscripts as a first author, and to present your projects and data at lab meetings, as well as local and international meetings. A high level of participation in a collaborative team setting is required, with a high level of self-motivation, excellent time management skills, ability to demonstrate creativity and sound judgment. Exemplary interpersonal and communication skills are preferred as the candidate is expected to work closely with graduate students. The candidate should demonstrate strong writing skills to ensure writing of quality scientific publications and grant applications. Preference will be given to those with a strong publication record. We are well-funded by our grants, and are looking for a dynamic and diligent addition to our group. The expected salary range for this position is $50,000 to $60,000 per year.
Please send a CV, a description of your research experience and interests, and the contact information of two references to: [email protected] (www.rodrigueslab.ca). The position will remain open until filled. Preliminary interviews will be conducted over Zoom. Only those under consideration will be contacted.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Research Fellow Opportunity
We are looking for a postdoctoral fellow who will strive to make a meaningful impact on child health by contributing to leading-edge research aimed at improving pain management.
In light of the current opioid crisis, there is increased urgency to balance both safety and effectiveness of opioid-based analgesics, while simultaneously limiting the use of opioids. Given the resulting hesitancy associated with prescribing opioids, we are likely undertreating pain in children. This can be particularly devastating in children with high burdens of pain, such as children with cancer, where ongoing pain can interfere with brain development, disrupt behaviour, and increase the risk of chronic pain.
Safe and effective pain management is influenced by individual genetic differences that dictate both how we feel pain and how we respond to specific analgesics. Using pharmacogenomics, the study of how genetic variability contributes to individual drug responses, we are identifying genetic factors that can help predict an individual’s need for, and subsequent response to, opioids.
As part of the Loucks Pain Management Pharmacogenomics (PMP) Lab, and the multi-disciplinary Canadian Pharmacogenomics Network for Drug Safety (CPNDS), the candidate will work closely with clinicians, scientists and patients across Canada to advance a pipeline from genetic discoveries to predictive genetic testing to help select the safest and most effective pain management strategies for children based on their unique genetic signatures.

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Fellow – Climate Extremes and Coastal Ecosystems
Professor Simon Donner and the Climate and Coastal Ecosystem Lab at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada are searching for a postdoctoral researcher to participate in interdisciplinary research on ocean extreme events and their effects on coastal ecosystems. The research group conducts work at the intersection of climate and marine science, and informs policy and management at national and international scales.
Coastal ecosystems are at the frontlines of climate change. Marine heatwaves attributed to human-caused climate change have caused mass mortality and phase shifts in coral reefs, kelp forests and other coastal ecosystems. In addition to other areas of climate science and policy research, our group studies the drivers of marine heatwaves and their effects on coral reef and kelp systems at the global scale using large-scale numerical modelling and data analysis, as well as via field research in the equatorial Pacific in collaboration with local partners (e.g., Republic of Kiribati, Galápagos Archipelago).
The postdoc will have the option to focus on one or more project(s) related to i) assessing multiple drivers of coral bleaching using a global database developed in the group; ii) drivers and effects of warm-season marine heatwaves in the central equatorial Pacific, iii) projecting the effect of compound climate extremes (temperature, oxygen, etc.) on coral and kelp systems. The position comes with opportunities to engage in climate policy and adaptation discussions, and for training in climate communication and engagement.
