(01) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

  • Topics of the PhD thesis: Evaluation of fuel cycle sustainability for major MSR concepts. It represents a PSI contribution to EU project Endurance and the candidate should be responsible for selected action and/or task in the project
  • As a first step of this PhD you will repeat a literature survey to collect MSR concepts existing in literature, group them and compare them with catalogue of nuclear reactor designs, which is already available
  • You should participate on literature survey of salt reprocessing techniques, their efficiency and fuel residence times
  • You should define the criteria for fuel cycle performance evaluation from neutronics, proliferation and nuclides flow perspective
  • You should apply these criteria on selected MSR concepts on an infinite lattice model assuming given preprocessing scheme and conclude about their performance
  • For selected concepts the full core model should be created and analyzed inclusive reprocessing unit and off-gas system providing detailed nuclides flow
  • You should evaluate the effect on fuel reprocessing scheme selection on the fuel cycle sustainability
  • Once the data will be available, you will evaluate the effect of active versus passive off-gas system unit on fuel cycle and nuclides flow
  • Waste immobilization and proliferation resistance of each fuel treatment should be considered

(02) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student to study the formation kinetics of calcium silicate hydrates

The study of solid formation from solutions is a fascinating research field with many implications, from synthesis of nanomaterials to biomedical applications to functional material properties. Your tasks will be to collect accurate experimental kinetic on C-S-H system from solution via in-situ techniques, study of the influence of experimental conditions at the early stage of the solid phase formation, develop computational models of the experimental results in the framework of the nucleation and growth theories, and eventually participate in related experiments using large scale facilities.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student

As part of an international project, we are investigating the behaviour of radionuclides in heavy liquid metal coolants to be used in advanced nuclear reactor systems and/or as spallation targets. One of the most hazardous radioelements occurring in these systems is polonium, which shows increased volatility when the coolant is exposed to traces of oxygen and moisture. Within this PhD project, your tasks will be to:

  • Implement electrochemical devices for the measurement and control of the oxygen concentration in the gas phase and in the liquid metal into an existing experimental setup for evaporation studies
  • Combine the evaporation setup with an advanced gas purification loop and to demonstrate the feasibility of in-situ oxygen and moisture control during an evaporation experiment
  • Prepare metal samples containing the radioelement polonium produced by neutron irradiation
  • Study the evaporation of polonium from the molten metal under variation of the oxygen concentration in the liquid metal and in the gas phase as well as the moisture content in the gas phase
  • Evaluate the data to extract fundamental thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of the evaporation reaction
  • Present and publish the obtained results at international conferences, project meetings and in peer reviewed journals

Deadline : 15 January 2025

(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in detector development

Embedded in a cross-disciplinary English-speaking team, you help develop a charge-integrating hybrid pixel detector for soft X-ray applications. Your responsibilities include testing detector prototypes with fine-pitch Low-Gain Avalanche Diode (LGAD) sensors, interpreting data, and employing interpolation techniques and machine learning to improve the position resolution of the devices. You perform independent measurements in our X-ray lab at PSI and participate in collaborative experiments at international synchrotron and Free Electron Laser facilities such as SwissFEL, Swiss Light Source, European XFEL, and Diamond Light Source. You publish your research findings in scientific journals and present your work at international workshops and conferences. The host university for the PhD program is University of Fribourg under the academic supervision of Prof. Dr Luc Patthey.

Deadline : 12 December 2024

About The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI), Switzerland- Official Website

The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) is a multi-disciplinary research institute for natural and engineering sciences in Switzerland. It is located in the Canton of Aargau in the municipalities Villigen and Würenlingen on either side of the River Aare, and covers an area over 35 hectares in size. Like ETH Zurich and EPFL, PSI belongs to the ETH Domain of the Swiss Confederation. The PSI employs around 3000 people. It conducts basic and applied research in the fields of matter and materials, human health, and energy and the environment. About 37% of PSI’s research activities focus on material sciences, 24% on life sciences, 19% on general energy, 11% on nuclear energy and safety, and 9% on particle physics.

PSI develops, builds and operates large and complex research facilities and makes them available to the national and international scientific communities. In 2017, for example, more than 2,500 researchers from 60 different countries came to PSI to take advantage of the concentration of large-scale research facilities in the same location, which is unique worldwide. About 1,900 experiments are conducted each year at the approximately 40 measuring stations in these facilities.
