PhD position summary/title: PhD Position on Microbiome-Driven Crop Nutrition
With the pressing need to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers, this PhD project explores the microbial interplay between sulfur and nitrogen metabolism in crops like soybean. By utilising advanced metagenomics, transcriptomics, and elemental analysis, the project aims to identify plant-microbe regulatory networks that enhance crop nutrition and resilience. Benefit from state-of-the-art facilities, interdisciplinary collaborations, and a vibrant scientific community at Utrecht University.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Multiphoton Printing for Biofabrication
Biofabrication is a relatively young field in which 3D fabrication technologies are used to generate living tissues by precisely patterning cells and biomaterials.
You will become a member of the research groups Malda and Levato research groups within the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht . In particular, you will contribute to the development and assembly of a novel multiphoton printing device, and will develop technological solution to converge light based printing approaches with other bioprinting techniques (including volumetric bioprinting and melt electrowriting). You will use this versatile set-up to produce complex 3D tissues, such as advanced in vitro models for cardiac and skeletal muscle tissues.
You will be performing cutting-edge research and will have access to state-of-the-art facilities both through the Veterinary Clinic and the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht (which includes the Utrecht Biofabrication Facility). You will coordinate your work within an (inter)national network of collaborators, while working in an ambitious, motivated, multi-disciplinary team of veterinarians, clinicians, material scientists, biologists, and engineers. Further, you will co-supervise BSc and MSc students during their internships and teaching opportunities will be available. You will be part of the Utrecht Graduate School of Life Sciences and will receive training, supervision, and guidance for both your research work and personal/professional development, which provides you with an excellent basis for an independent academic career.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: Empowering regenerative agriculture
We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD candidate to join our research team. The successful candidate will work on an inter and transdisciplinary project aiming to inspire a paradigm shift in agriculture and to accelerate the transition to regenerative agriculture in the Netherlands.
This interdisciplinary PhD research project aims to explore the conditions under which farm businesses are empowered to transition to regenerative agriculture, as well as to interrogate the role of existing regenerative agriculture schemes and key, but often overlooked food system actors (among which farmer organisations, banks, advisors and insurance companies, and suppliers) to (dis)empower farm businesses. This PhD project will advance a conceptualisation of empowerment in transitions to regenerative agriculture, and investigate empirically to what extent and how different agrifood governance arrangements and food system actors (dis)empower farm businesses.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: One Health Research on Zoonotic Pathogens in Air at Poultry Farms
Using a One Health approach, you will be developing and implementing technological innovations to uncover insights into airborne introduction, circulation and emission of zoonotic pathogens. To improve air sampling, you will work in close collaboration with the poultry husbandry industry to incorporate air sampling technology in ventilation systems. To advance analyses of air samples, you will become part of our team working on novel analysis approaches by extending molecular techniques beyond pathogen-specific genetic material to include screening for host DNA. You will be involved in sampling programmes implementing these innovations at conventional poultry farms. Ultimately, you will be working towards a broad One Health risk assessment for airborne pathogens overall and with specific focus on high priority pathogens including Avian Influenza-virus and Campylobacter jejuni.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position on Data Diversity for Fair and Robust NLP (DataDivers project)
The rise of Large Language Models (LLMs) and the availability of massive datasets have sparked a revolution in the field of NLP. However, numerous studies have pointed towards serious flaws: NLP models encode societal biases and show disparate performance across demographic groups. Thus, current models can and do cause real harm when deployed in society.
In the field of NLP, there is a growing recognition that data quality is key to better language models, yet we know surprisingly little about the link between data and model behaviour. In this project, we will develop methods to measure the diversity of NLP datasets, assess the impact of diversity on NLP models, and improve data collection and model training.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position on Coastal Adaptation to Sea-Level Rise
In this PhD project you will collect field data and use numerical models to assess possibilities of (and limits to) climate adaptation for the entire Wadden Sea coast and its islands. It is part of the new and exciting WADWAD project : a tri-lateral consortium of Dutch, German, and Danish scientists and engineers that will develop an action plan for the Wadden Sea coastal area.
You, together with the rest of the UU team, will bring in expertise on coastal geomorphology and climate change adaptation. The rest of the project includes sedimentologists, biologists, economists, and social scientists that cover topics of coastal adaptation from the paleo record all the way to cost-benefit analyses and stakeholder acceptance.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Machine learning in science and society A Dangerous Toy?
The same machine learning methods that are unprecedently used across large areas of science are also wide ranging across society. ML models are determining what news we see, risk scores for fraud, and more. LLMs are structuring our knowledge with ChatGPT integrated with Bing search and Quora answers, even despite well documented cases of ChatGPT ‘hallucinations.’
Current approaches to evaluating ML models in society have clustered around issues of fairness, bias, problems of justice by introducing ML models at scale, the right to explanation, and more. While all these issues remain important, there is a deep worry that ML models might not be providing us with genuine information or knowledge in the first place. Before we can make informed decisions about when and where ML models should be used across society, we need to understand their epistemic value.
The aim of this PhD project is to bring methods and resources from philosophy of science (e.g. idealisation and representation) to answer important questions in AI ethics regarding appropriate use of ML models in society. How do ML models idealize social phenomena? When do the idealisations of ML models get in the way of acceptable use?

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Nanopositioning with Optimal Optical Information
The aim of this project is to extend our information-centered optical measurement strategy, both mathematically and practically, to cases where multiple parameters need to be extracted from complex measurements. For instance, you will investigate what insights can be gained from measurements that involve multiple illuminations, sensor channels, viewing angles, polarisation channels, and wavelengths. Collaborating with local experts and our industrial partner, ASM Pacific Technology, you will adapt this theoretical framework to real-world applications, particularly in measuring the placement of bonds and wires on integrated circuits (ICs).
