The Faculty of Medicine, Department of Global Public Health and Primary Care, is offering a full-time PhD-position for a duration of three (3) years. The project initiation and at least the first 6 months of the employment period shall take place in Norway.
The position is part of the project “Optimizing the implementation and scale-up of WHO treatment decisions for children with pulmonary tuberculosis in Sub-saharan Africa-OPTIC-TB, funded by the University of Bergen. PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow in the early Archean terrestrial sulfur cycle
Sulfur has been a key element in understanding Earth’s surface conditions through geological time. It is preserved In the rock record in both an oxidized (sulfate) and reduced (sulfide) form, and atmospheric, chemical and biological redox reactions produce characteristic changes in stable sulfur isotope ratios that can be traced in rocks all the way back to the Archean eon. Multiple sulfur isotopes have been used successfully to trace sulfur cycling in Archean marine settings, but relatively little is known about near-shore and terrestrial environments. Sulfur isotopes in these locations are expected to better capture atmospheric processes as well as microbial metabolisms under elevated input of nutrients from emerged land, and provide an important comparison for the Archean marine sulfur isotope record.
This PhD position is dedicated to increase our understanding of the early Archean terrestrial sulfur cycle. The project will primarily focus on samples from the 3.2 Ga Moodies Group in the Barberton Greenstone Belt, South Africa that contain silicified sulfate concretions and have been obtained through scientific drilling in the ICDP project Barberton Archean Surface Environments (BASE). Work will include the interpretation of CT and µCT data to understand mineralogical relations and concretion growth processes, bulk and SIMS multiple sulfur isotope analyses of sulfate and sulfide minerals in the concretions and surrounding sedimentary rocks, and integration of field observations and geochemical data to build a holistic model for the sulfur cycle in early shallow marine to subaerial settings.

The Department of Foreign Languages invites applications for a PhD position in Latin American history commencing from June 1st, 2025, or as agreed upon. The position is for a fixed-term period of four years. The call is open for projects within the scope of The DARKLAX project: The Dark Side of Sustainability: Norway and the Rise and Fall of Salmon Farming in Chile. A transnational history of the future (1970-2030), directed by principal investigator, Associate Professor Ernesto Semán.
The Department of Foreign Languages spans nine different languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian and Spanish language and Latin-American Studies. The successful applicant will join the research section at The Cultural History department, at the University Museum in Bergen. Besides research, the Department is responsible for archaeological excavations and cultural heritage management in the county of Vestland counties, as well as Sunnmøre. The museum´s archaeological collections consist of remains from the Stone Age to the Middle Ages, when Bergen had become one of the Nordic countries’ largest international trading cities. Between these two extremes in time, the sources shed light on cultural, technological and societal development over several thousand years, with the diverse landscape of Western Norway as a prominent research arena. In addition to artefacts, the collections contain a large archive of photographic material and documentation from archaeological investigations carried out over the past 150 years.

The EU-funded Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network for Climate-Tectonics Interactions (INITIATE, https://www.initiate-dn.eu/) comprises thirteen PhD projects. INITIATE focuses on training early-career researchers to understand how climate and tectonics interact across various spatial and temporal scales. The goal is to develop solutions for georesources (natural gas, geothermal, water), sub-surface storage (hydrogen, carbon, and nuclear waste), and geohazards (landslides, debris flows, and active faulting). The program collaborates with 9 European Institutes, Academic partners, and 7 Companies actively involved in sustainable georesources, geohazards, and the environment. Additionally, entrepreneurial skills are integrated into the training program to prepare doctoral candidates for careers in industry or academia. Each doctoral candidate is linked to a second academic partner to complement and broaden their scientific training and to a dedicated industry partner to acquire industry-relevant skills.
