PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Gender Studies and Epidemiology
The Institute of Social and Preventive Medicine (ISPM) of Bern performs research in a range of disciplines relevant to public health (www.ispm.unibe.ch). Groups cut across divisions, facilitating an interdisciplinary approach to research in the fields of clinical epidemiology, social and behavioral health, biostatistics, and international and environmental health. The ISPM is highly reputed for its expertise in health effects of environmental exposures, the spread of infectious diseases, and the health of vulnerable groups including children and the elderly.
The Research-on-Research Group, headed by Prof. Dr. med. Angèle Gayet-Ageron, conducts projects in the fields of clinical methodology, research ecosystem (role of gender), and patient and public involvement.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Digital Pathology
The University of Bern is looking for a PhD student / Doctoral Candidate (DC). This DC position is part of the MIRACLE consortium, a Marie-Sklodowska Curie Actions Doctoral Network that started on the 1st of February 2024.
The primary supervisor for the project is Prof. María Rodríguez Martínez, an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Informatics & Data Science at the Yale School of Medicine (https://medicine.yale.edu/biomedical-informatics-data-science/), and an adjunct researcher with the Institute of Tissue Medicine and Pathology (ITMP), University of Bern. The student will be based at the University of Bern, Switzerland, and will join the group of the secondary supervisor, Prof. Inti Zlobec, a Professor of Digital Pathology at the ITMP. Collaboration between both groups is expected. To ensure this, a portion of the PhD program will be spent at Yale University.
Prof. María Rodríguez Martínez has a background in physics. She transitioned to computational biology during her postdoctoral studies at the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel) and Columbia University (USA). Between 2013 and 2023, she led the Computational Systems Biology team at IBM Research Europe (Switzerland), dedicated to the development of novel computational strategies for personalized cancer treatments. A major part of this work was developed under the umbrella of two major EU-funded consortia focused on prostate and pediatric cancers, which she successfully initiated and coordinated. Her current research integrates mechanistic and artificial intelligence models, with a particular emphasis on the development of interpretable deep learning approaches for computational biology. Recently, her research has concentrated on cancer immunology, leading to the development of predictive models for T cell receptor binding and the exploration of B cell evolution.

We are seeking a highly motivated PhD candidate to embark on an exciting project focusing on the development of a comprehensive multi-scale model of the immune system, with a particular emphasis on inflammation and its role in cardiometabolic diseases (CMD). The project aims to identify new therapeutic strategies to mitigate inflammation and disease progression in CMD. The PhD candidate will develop hybrid mathematical-AI models that integrate mechanistic insights with AI methodologies, addressing challenges related to data scarcity, lack of robustness and generalization of existing data-driven models. The model will be trained on multi-omics datasets and will encapsulate known macrophage and T-cell biology.

It examines attitudes, motivation and emotions (mental models) that characterize learning (target group: learners), teaching (target group: teachers) and learning support (target group: parents) of Italian as a foreign language in schools in the German-speaking part of the canton of Graubünden. In addition, the relationship between these variables and the Italian language skills acquired at the end of primary school will be investigated.

La ricerca intende indagare atteggiamenti, motivazione ed emozioni (modelli mentali) caratterizzanti l’apprendimento (gruppo target “apprendenti”), l’insegnamento (gruppo target “insegnanti”) e il supporto allo studio (gruppo target “genitori”) dell’italiano come lingua straniera scolastica (L2) nella parte germanofona del Cantone dei Grigioni. Sarà inoltre analizzata la relazione che intercorre tra tali variabili e le competenze acquisite in italiano alla fine della scuola elementare.

A funded PhD position is available for research on the genomic consequences of population isolation, speciation and hybridization and their feedback on associated microbes. This will contribute to answering fundamental questions such as: What is the importance of adaptive and neutral processes during evolutionary divergence? How tight is the association between microorganisms and their hosts? We will address this through analyses of existing and new genomic data sets of Microtus voles and their microbes. The project can be adjusted in part to your specific interests but I expect to build on our recent publications on the Microtus-virus systems. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to other projects in the group.

A funded PhD position is available in the group of Gerald Heckel for genomic research on the population structure and connectivity of free-roaming dogs and their viruses. This position is part of a large interdisciplinary project funded by the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) aiming to determine the role of free-roaming dogs in the spread and persistence of infectious disease. The project will combine experts from veterinary and social sciences, epidemiology, mathematical modelling and population genetics to test which influence the landscape, infrastructure and human-dog relationships have on disease transmission in Africa and Asia. A postdoctoral position will open soon to work closely with the PhD candidate on the population genetics aspects, and several PhD and postdoctoral researchers from the other disciplines will collaborate.
