PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate that studies agricultural collectives bending the curve of biodiversity loss

We are looking for an anthropologically and/or sociologically-trained candidate with a rural interest, an affinity with ecology and an ability to work interdisciplinary. You will draw on long-term and in-depth ethnographic research within selected Dutch agricultural collectives. You will seek to understand how the focus of collectives, for example on getting subsidies for later mowing benefitting meadow birds, or for higher water tables to reduce soil subsidence, shapes the identity formation and organisation of the agricultural collective in question. How do farmers negotiate all kinds of values around a topic such as nitrogen or water management? How do godwits or earthworms inspire farmers to take a long-term, multispecies perspective? And how does their common focus shape their ability to inspire and relate to other agricultural stakeholders such as other collectives, farmers, NGOs, and companies?

PhD position summary/title: PhD Researcher on life cycle-based sustainability assessment and circularity mapping

A future-proof healthcare sector requires the inclusion of safety and sustainability in the design of new medical devices. The same reasoning applies to the packaging materials that will be used in the healthcare sector, without obviously compromising their required technical performance. As a PhD candidate in this project, you will have the opportunity to develop Life Cycle Assessment models to assess the environmental and social impacts, as well as the circularity potentials of a sample of medical devices and packing materials used in the healthcare sector. These will be integrated into a comprehensive methodology to shape safe and more sustainable healthcare products and packaging materials.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD position: X-ray spectroscopy on electrochemical interfaces (1.0 FTE)

Electrochemical devices such as batteries, fuel cells, and electrolyzers play a key role in the energy transition, facilitating electrical energy storage and the production of green chemicals. This PhD project focuses on resolving the molecular-level interactions that occur at the interface between the electrodes and the electrolyte of such devices. At this interface, the interactions between the electrode surface, reactants, products, adsorbates, ions, and water molecules determine how well the electrochemistry performs and how stable the device is during prolonged operation. Using the new X-ray spectroscopy methods developed in our group, we can get a grip on these interactions by producing a chemical fingerprint for every element at the electrode-electrolyte interface. You will use this methodology to unravel the electrode-electrolyte interactions that occur at the surface of carbon electrodes, which are widely used in both batteries and electrocatalysis. Your work will be embedded in the ANION consortium, enabling you to interact with electrochemists, spectroscopists, and microscopists from six knowledge institutes spread over the Netherlands. For your research, you will have the opportunity to combine our unique electrochemical X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy set-up with X-ray spectroscopy at synchrotron facilities.

(08) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position II Noise and correlations in electrochemistry

This PhD project aims at investigating the fundamental processes in nanoscale electrochemistry by exploiting the information contained in the electronic noise of electrochemical currents, and the correlations in the noise for multiple nanoprobes. The research project is financed by the NWO ‘zwaartekracht’ program Advanced Nano-Electrochemistry Institute Of the Netherlands (ANION).

Many open questions on the fundamental principles in electrochemistry remain unsolved. Here, we propose to introduce novel techniques that permit the investigation of some of the pressing questions. Individual electrochemical reaction events have long been suspected to show anomalous correlations, both, in space and in time. Such correlations can be revealed by measuring the noise in the current. In our groups we have ample experience in noise measurements in nanoscale conductors, and these techniques can be adapted for the investigation of electrochemical processes. The project will require the development of nanoscale electrodes with control over the size and relative position of the electrodes. Here, we will benefit from our experience in fabricating nanopositioning systems, and fabricating nanopores with embedded graphene or thin film metallic electrodes. The PhD student will be jointly supervised by Jan van Ruitenbeek (LION) and Grégory Schneider (LIC), and work in close collaboration with a PhD student at the University of Amsterdam who will develop the theory and advanced computer simulations for the noise in electrochemistry.

Who is behind a successful scientist? In colonial Indonesia, it was local informants and assistants. They provided information scientists needed or collected plants or animals. In this project, the focus is on these Indonesian epistemic actors and the role they have played in the making of (scientific) knowledge in (and about) colonial and postcolonial Indonesia (1850-today). This includes their contribution to Western scientific knowledge but also their influence on local knowledge communities. The PhD in the project will develop a case study within this framework, with a focus on anthropology or natural history. A field trip to Indonesia is included in the project.
