PhD position summary/title: PhD Stipend in Verification of Neural Networks for Control
The project addresses the fundamental question of how to trust a neural network that controls a dynamical system. Since neural networks are large black boxes, we need both automatic methods to analyze such systems and human-interpretable certificates of the analysis results. We will devise automatic and sound methods to respectively certify correctness and incorrectness of neural-network controllers. We will also develop a framework that integrates these methods for constructing correct-by-design controllers. Methodologically, we will investigate how traditional computer-science techniques for verification and falsification as well as machine learning can be tailored to these goals. This way, the project lays the grounds toward safe AI control systems.
Deadline : 02.03.2025
(04) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Stipend in Uncovering Microbial Interactions for Biocontrol Strategies
The PhD stipend is part of the Industrial Biotechnology and Environmental Biotechnology- Project Grant funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation“Exploiting microbial interactions for biocontrol in wastewater treatment: Fighting foam-formers(BioFIGHT)”. Specifically, as part of your PhD research, you will explore microbial prey-predator interactions to develop innovative biocontrol strategies for environmental biotechnology. This project will combine computational and experimental approaches, leveraging large-scale longitudinal microbial datasets from wastewater treatment systems. You will apply experimental methods such as metagenomics, metatranscriptomics, and advanced microscopy to investigate prey-predator interactions, unravel antagonistic mechanisms, and validate key findings. Within a broader framework, your work will contribute to the development of biocontrol alternatives to real-world environmental problems.
Deadline : 25.02.2025
(05) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Stipend/Integrated PhD In Detection Of RNA-based Pesticides
The Department of Chemistry and Bioscience, Section for Ecology and Genomics, invites applications for a PhD fellowship to study the biological effects and environmental fate of biotechnological pesticides based on double-stranded RNA(dsRNA). The project will focus on quantifying impacts on non-target organisms and uncovering mechanisms driving species-specific sensitivities.
This PhD fellowship is part of the ENSAFE project(ENvironmental SAFEty of biotechnological plant protection products based on double-stranded RNA and peptides) funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation. The project aims to develop tools and methods to support evidence-based risk assessment frameworks for bio-based plant protection products(PPPs).
The PhD will specifically investigate:
-
-
- Detection methods for dsRNA in environmental samples(e.g., soil), including direct molecule identification and indirect assessments via physiological effects on soil organisms.
-
-
-
- The environmental fate of newly commercialized dsRNA-based products, such as Ledprona(approved in the USA, December 2023) and other non-commercial products.
-
-
-
- Species-specific effects of dsRNA-based PPPs using molecular techniques, such as transcriptomics and proteomics, to explore physiological changes in organisms. Focus will also be on microbiomes.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Stipend in Quantitative Analysis of Impact Investing and Social Entrepreneurship Scaling
The PhD project is part of a network of 15 doctoral theses that all contribute to the overall goal of understanding social entrepreneurship (SE) scaling. This particular PhD thesis is part of the work package on “Impact Investing for Social Entrepreneurship Scaling”. The position is focused on quantitatively assessing the impact of hybrid financing strategies, Schumpeterian ‘creative destruction’ logics, and impact fidelity on the scaling of social enterprises. This research will involve a systematic literature review of empirical papers on SE scaling and impact investing, followed by developing measures to quantitatively test these factors through a cross-sectional survey of impact investors. More specifically, the PhD candidate will explore the connection between business model aspects and impact investment decisions by looking into investors’ perceived success factors for social entrepreneurship. You will use structural equation modeling (SEM) and other quantitative research methods to probe the connections between these factors, offering new insights into how they shape the trajectory of SE scaling. The research predominantly attempts to contribute to the Social and Sustainable Entrepreneurship literature.
