PhD position summary/title: PhD researcher position for the project Aspirational Urbanism and the Recodification of Defiance

The function of a blank sheet of A4 paper in a context of censorship reflects the need to recognize new forms of defiance. As speech is being monitored through different technologies and in a range of arenas from the public square to social media and across university campuses, defiance takes new forms of symbolic critique. In the project “Aspirational Urbanism and the Recodification of Defiance (ASPIRA)”, recognizing defiance contributes to the aim of conceptualizing aspirational urbanism as a way of understanding the function of alterity (alternative futures, speculative possibilities) in shaping cities. Rather than explaining urban change in Hong Kong and Taipei exclusively in terms of tiger economics or the developmentalist state, beyond techno-positivism and growth machine dogmas, ASPIRA recognizes defiance as the agency of urban residents in contesting perceived inevitabilies. The project builds on theoretical work on urban futures, understanding cities as sites for planning, imagining and representing futures. It also recognizes the unequal capacities and risks involved, highlighting the “cruel” ascriptions to optimism and the potentially devastating consequences of aspiration. ASPIRA’s approach identifying defiance by centering on visual analysis grounds aspirational urbanism, rescaling the object of urban theory towards everyday micro-practices.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Exploring Flatworm Speciation and Biodiversity in the African Great Lakes

Dr. Jeremias Brand’s research group at the University of Basel offers a PhD position to study flatworm biodiversity in the African Great Lakes.

Adaptive radiations-characterized by rapid speciation and remarkable morphological diversity-are key drivers of biodiversity on our planet. Ecological opportunities such as the colonization of new environments like islands or lakes often trigger adaptive radiations. Yet a fundamental question remains unanswered: Why do some lineages radiate while closely related ones do not?

This project investigates this evolutionary puzzle by studying Macrostomum flatworm in the African Great Lakes. While cichlid fishes in these lakes represent one of biology’s most celebrated examples of an adaptive radiation, we have recently uncovered evidence that tiny flatworms have undergone a parallel but independent radiation in the same waters. This project represents the first investigation of an adaptive radiation in free-living flatworms and will substantially contribute to understanding why speciation occurs in certain lineages but not others.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Fellow

The successful candidate will join swisspeace and complete a PhD in political science at the University of Basel as part of the Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) project “From Pixels to Peace: The Role of Visual Communication in Conflict Transformation.” Professor Laurent Goetschel and Isabel Prinzing at swisspeace/University of Basel, Professor Katharina Lobinger at Università della Svizzera italiana (USI), and Professor Cornelia Brantner at Karlstad University in Sweden coordinate the project.
Our research project examines the role of visual communication in peacebuilding. In particular, it analyzes visual representations of peace in contexts where peace is partial, fragile, and continually negotiated. As a case study, we will work on the context of Colombia. We focus on how peace can be visually conveyed in a more nuanced manner, building on the concepts of “everyday peace” and the “local turn” in peacebuilding.
Its interdisciplinary research design links visual communication research with peace and conflict studies. We further aim to translate scientific findings into practical guidance for NGOs, media professionals, and policymakers.
