PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. Position in Personalized Visual Analytics: Human Preference Elicitation for Ranking-Based Multi-Criteria Decision Support 100 %
Multi-criteria decision support through item ranking is an understudied research direction. Current solutions exhibit considerable limitations, primarily due to their inability to meet the multi-faceted nature of human decision-making. Choosing between thousands of relevant items is a common task, where people are left alone with the need to express and balance multiple desirable preferences at once. Item rankings are a popular and universal approach to structuring unorganized item collections by multiple criteria at the same time. In interactive solutions, people can express multiple preferences, used by algorithms to compute human-centered and personal rankings. Visual Analytics (VA) is a field of research that supports complex human decision-making tasks by bringing together human intellectuality with the computational power of algorithms in effective human-in-the-loop approaches.
In this project, we will demonstrate how cutting-edge VA principles can be transferred to item ranking, to overcome remaining challenges, demonstrate effective and efficient interactive ranking creation solutions, and empower broad audiences. Limitations of ranking systems mainly include their incompatibility for the elicitation of item- and attribute-based preferences, insufficient handling of user-introduced uncertainty, inadequate guidance for engaging with large item sets, lacking interaction histories, inefficient human-centric feedback loops, or a lack of explanations and transparency of ranking algorithms, thus creating a disconnect between the technology and nuanced user needs. Finally, interactive ranking creation does not yet make use of interfaces for eliciting implicit user preferences, e.g., in textual form using large language models.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the field of law and human reproduction, with a focus on empirical legal studies and legal data science 80 %
What are the social norms guiding fertility choices? How do prices affect the use of assisted reproduction technologies? How do laws affect the parenthood happiness gap? How can we empirically test highly controversial claims about human reproduction and its normative challenges?
The University Research Priority Program (URPP) “Human Reproduction Reloaded | H2R” explores rapidly developing medical technologies in the field of human reproduction, the societal challenges they pose and their legal implications. This interdisciplinary positioned URPP is hosted by the Faculty of Law and brings together researchers from six faculties as well as from various disciplines from the humanities, social, medical and natural sciences. The URPP’s phase 2 (2025-2028) revolves around three main research foci: family, kinship and gender; declining fertility and non-reproduction; and CRISPR.
The PhD position will be attached to the Chair for Legal Tech, Law and Economics, and Public Law (Prof. Dr. Dr. Yoan Hermstrüwer). The chair provides a genuinely interdisciplinary and international work environment. Our team is committed to exploring a wide range of social, economic and political issues bearing on all areas of the law. Our research projects rest on experimental methods, econometric analysis, and methods from data science more generally.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the University Research Priority Program “Adaptive Brain Circuits during Learning and Development: AdaBD” 100%
A doctoral position is available as part of the ChildBrainCircuits+ (CBC+) project of the University Research Priority Program (URPP) AdaBD. The project is led by Prof. S. Brem and Dr. S. Di Pietro in collaboration with Prof. C. Ruff, Prof. N. Raschle, PD M. von Rhein and Prof. A. Rauch at the Department of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Psychiatric University Hospital Zurich.
The efficient integration and processing of stimuli from different sensory modalities is fundamental for learning and the development of cognition, perception and, in particular, language. Deficits in learning and/or the processing of multisensory information impair children’s development. However, the neurobiological and genetic basis of multisensory learning in the brain and the changes in these learning processes in the brain of children with and without language disorders and children with autism during development have hardly been studied. In a first phase, the CBC project examined children between the ages of 5 and 12, both with and without language impairment, using comprehensive psychometric tests and functional and structural magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during learning and the processing of multisensory information. As a doctoral student, you will be responsible for the second phase of the project. You will collect longitudinal behavioral and (f)MRI data from the cohort and analyze them, particularly using a computational modeling approach, for your publication-based dissertation. You will also recruit a group of children with autism, which will be compared with the previously assessed group of children.
