PhD position summary/title: PhD student – Physics of bacterial infections

The research group of Knut Drescher (https://drescherlab.org) focuses on understanding physical processes in the development of bacterial communities (called “biofilms”), particularly in the context of human infections. Our studies are based on highly controlled laboratory experiments or clinical samples. Biofilms are antibiotic-tolerant bacterial communities that are the cause of many chronic and acute infections, but biofilms are also a model system for understanding basic aspects of multicellular organization in living systems. The PhD project will utilize custom microscopy and optical techniques to investigate bacterial biofilms during infections and during biofilm growth. The exact project is flexible and will be developed together with Knut Drescher, depending on the strengths and interests of the PhD student.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position 90%

The University Psychiatric Clinics (UPK) Basel are among the leading psychiatric clinics in Switzerland and are responsible for providing high-quality, needs-based psychiatric and psychotherapeutic care to adults, children, and adolescents. Thanks to their proximity to the University of Basel, the UPK is always at the cutting edge of medical knowledge and develops its own new treatment methods.

The Center for Chronobiology at the University Psychiatric Clinics Basel researches the fundamentals of circadian and homeostatic regulation of the human sleep-wake rhythm, cognitive performance and mood, memory consolidation, and the regulation of the thermo- and endocrine systems in healthy and mentally ill individuals. One of our research focuses on so-called “zeitgebers” (i.e., “synchronizers”) and their role in controlling the human circadian timing system (internal clock). We are currently conducting projects on the non-visual effects of photic zeitgebers (artificial light and daylight), caffeine, and the influence of environmental noise on sleep and circadian rhythms. One goal of the Center for Chronobiology is to translate its own research findings into clinical applications in the fields of sleep medicine, psychiatry, and occupational medicine.

The Integrative Human Circadian Daylight Platform (iHCDP) ( https://ihcdp.org/ ) is a joint project between the Center for Chronobiology at the University of Basel (Prof. Dr. Christian Cajochen, Dr. Mirjam Münch, Dr. med. Corrado Garbazza) and the Technical University of Munich (Prof. Dr. Manuel Spitschan), funded by the VELUX Foundation (Switzerland). The goal of the platform is to generate new knowledge at the interface between chronobiology, daylight research, ophthalmology, and gerontology.
