The candidate will be part of a research team focused on RNA biology in the context of adaptive immunity and autoimmune disease. We are using high-throughput confocal microscopy and proximity labelling and sequencing approaches to characterize molecular regulation in inflammation. The project aims to characterize the role of biomolecular condensates in immune cell activation and identify the mechanisms controlling the expression of immunoglobulin transcripts. Using both experimental molecular and cellular biology methods and bioinformatics, the project will expand our knowledge of mRNA regulation in the adaptive immune system and identify potential molecular targets for therapeutic interventions in inflammatory disease.

(07) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Analytical Sociology

The Institute for Analytical Sociology (IAS) seeks to fill one to two 4-year PhD position/s in Analytical Sociology. The IAS is an international, interdisciplinary research center located in Norrköping, Sweden, with a PhD program in Analytical Sociology and an international Masters’ program in Computational Social Science.  The research strengths of the IAS include the study of segregation, culture, and politics, as well as social network analysis and computational text analysis. IAS is also home of the Swedish Excellence Center in Computational Social Science (SweCSS). More information can be found here: https://liu.se/en/organisation/liu/iei/ias

The successful candidate will be enrolled in the IAS doctoral degree program in Analytical Sociology (including coursework totaling 60 ECTS credits) and join an international research team with backgrounds in sociology, political science, network science, statistics, and machine learning. More information on the PhD program can be found here: https://liu.se/en/article/doctoral-studies-in-analytical-sociology

The area of specialization for the advertised PhD position is open, but applicants must demonstrate interests that align with current researchers at IAS.  Furthermore, applicants should indicate interest in one or more of the following four research groups:

The Segregation Group examines how people become unevenly distributed across social space, whether residential, organizational, or relational. Segregation is a recurring topic in analytical sociology, offering a key example of how interacting individuals may unintentionally bring about macro-level outcomes. The group at IAS focuses on the dynamic processes that lead to a concentration of individuals with certain socio-economic or ethnic characteristics in different workplaces, schools, and neighborhoods, and the consequences this has for the life courses and well-being of individuals. The research often uses the Swedish population registers, with existing projects studying how residential and school segregation are interconnected, how school peers shape educational outcomes, and how the depiction of neighborhoods in social media impacts residential choices.

The Politics, Culture, and Knowledge Group supports research on the mechanisms that produce large-scale social change. The main theoretical and empirical domains of the group are the study of science, the arts, norms, and politics. The group sponsors seminars, workshops, and PhD courses in collaboration with the Swedish Excellence Center for Computational Social Science (SweCSS).  Current and recent projects have examined political polarization and radicalization in online forums, traditional media, and legislative bodies, the diffusion of musical tastes, the dynamics of scientific and literary change, and the selection of Nobel laureates.

Deadline :  31 August 2025.

(08) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Environmental Science at Environmental Change

The position for a doctoral student is announced as part of the research area “Digestion Processes” within the Biogas Solutions Research Center (BSRC) hosted by LiU. The activities of the PhD position will be performed through close collaboration with industrial, societal and academic members of BSRC (www.biogasresearchcenter.se).

The main purpose of the PhD project is to investigate the fate of organic pollutants present in organic residues from sources such as agricultural, municipal and industrial activities and assess their fate and transformation in AD plants. Current understanding of the dynamics of macro and micropollutants in AD plants mainly refers to change of bulk properties. The proposed research aims to advance this science to knowledge of transformation processes at the molecular resolution. This knowledge will enable defining strategies to direct the degradation of these pollutants to harmless transformation products.

Mechanistic understanding of the dynamic transformation of complex biomass resources and pollutants in AD plants will enhance utilization of bioresources and generation of added-value products with targeted properties for various applications. One example of valorization of the effluents from AD systems (i.e. digestate) is production of dedicated biofertilizers as a green bioresource in the agriculture with potentials to substitute mineral fertilizers. Digestate quality and yield are of upmost important and will benefit from a molecular level understanding of the dynamics of organic matter and pollutants in AD plants. The project intends to promote circular bioeconomy principles, significant in advancing green technologies.

You will study the molecular complexity of organic matter to elucidate pathways underlying the anaerobic transformation of macro and micropollutants and to develop strategies for enhancing their degradation in AD systems. Among the available analytical options, liquid chromatography with various detection modes, target and non-target mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy will be the main applied methods.

As a PhD student you will be expected to conduct independent research in line with the research focus. The work assignments particularly relate to the focus area on interplay between physicochemical and microbiological parameters with dynamics of organic matter and pollutants in anaerobic bioprocesses. Also, it includes the management and feeding of biogas reactors. This includes responsibility for research that involves planning, sampling, reactor maintenance, overall laboratory work connected to biogas processes, data processing and writing scientific articles.

You are expected to contribute to a positive, stimulating, and creative work environment at TEMA Environmental Change and BSRC. A requirement for the position is good knowledge of English, both spoken and written.

As a doctoral student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research project of which you are a part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20% of full-time.

Deadline : September 8, 2025.
