PhD position summary/title: A Privacy-Preserving Architecture for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks Using Mobile and Decentralised Edge Computing
This project investigates the design and implementation of a privacy-preserving architecture for Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks (VANETs) leveraging mobile, flexible, and decentralised edge computing. The goal is to enhance data privacy, security, and system availability by
distributing computing resources closer to the data sources—vehicles and roadside units. The student will explore edge computing frameworks suitable for highly dynamic vehicular environments and develop mechanisms to ensure secure data transmission, anonymisation,
and resilience against attacks or node failures. The final output will include a prototype demonstrating secure data handling in a simulated VANET environment, supported by a performance and security evaluation.

PhD position summary/title: Accelerated Systems Assurance with Model-Based Systems Engineering
MBSE offers a framework for considering all aspects of a requirement, and its solution, in a logically integrated way that can persist and evolve through the whole lifecycle of a solution or product. As such, there is huge potential for effectively and efficiently tackling the real-life complexities of problems. However, this potential is most often not unlocked.
Frazer-Nash is a leading systems, engineering and technology company that helps organisations deliver innovative engineering and technology solutions to make lives safe, secure, sustainable, and affordable. Co-funded by Frazer-Nash and EPSRC, this project will focus on developing an end-to-end MBSE process that includes considerations of safety and certification leading to more speedy assurance; the research will consider both technical and non-technical challenges associated with project deliverables.
The project is suitable for students who have a STEM background. The programme includes formal teaching in model-based systems engineering from Loughborough Systems Engineering experts and industrial leaders. Throughout the duration of the programme, the student will be mostly based at Frazer-Nash’s Bristol office. This will provide the student with a suitable working environment, access to necessary infrastructure, and opportunities for interaction with stakeholders.

PhD position summary/title: Biofidelic traction testing of artificial turf
This PhD focuses on the development of a novel approach to measuring the traction behaviour of artificial turf, supported by FieldTurf, a global leader in the production of artificial turf for sport. The research has the potential to make a significant and novel contribution to player-surface traction and support the development of new testing capabilities relevant to manufacturers of both artificial turf and studded footwear. It will also provide excellent employment opportunities to the researcher.

PhD position summary/title: Development and validation of a bespoke sweat sensor to monitor nuanced changes in sweat rate
At present, it is not possible to measure sweating over an extended period of time through a wearable system. Moreover, it is not yet clearly understood how sweating is linked to emotional responses, and how sweat glands respond to different lifestyles, in particular sedentary.
The objective of this project, in collaboration with Unilever, is to design, build and validate a wearable, flexible biosensor to be used across the body, with the ability to distinguish between apocrine and eccrine gland activation, to create a link to monitor the emotional response to triggers and to build a stronger link to the onset of sweating.
This is an exciting new collaborative project between our Sports Technology Institute and Unilever, an innovative and world-leading company specialising in consumer goods, with a strong commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge research.

PhD position summary/title: Evaluation of pre-ignition risks induced by lubricating oils in hydrogen internal combustion engines
Hydrogen is a clean, zero-carbon fuel, but its high reactivity makes it vulnerable to pre-ignition. The presence of lubricating oil droplets can worsen this risk by evaporating, altering chemical pathways, and producing nanoscale soot particles that may trigger early ignition. These phenomena can compromise engine safety, performance, and durability.
In this project, you will explore how different oil formulations and engine parameters affect ignition behaviour. You’ll use advanced tools such as chemical kinetic modelling, multi-dimensional CFD simulations, and collaborate closely with experimental researchers.

PhD position summary/title: Nutritional supplements and sports performance, assessment of current evidence and practices
Competitive athletes of various standards are continually striving to enhance exercise performance outcomes. A common approach to enhance exercise performance and post-exercise recovery is the consumption of dietary supplements. There are several macronutrients and micronutrients with performance enhancing effects. Many studies have assessed the efficacy of a single dietary supplement to enhance exercise performance in different exercise settings. However, in practice, many athletes use dietary supplement blends comprising different macronutrient and micronutrient combinations including certain active or functional components. Therefore, further research is required to assess the effects of different dietary supplement blends on performance outcomes in a variety of exercise settings.

PhD position summary/title: Quantum Local Area Network
NPL, the UK’s national metrology institute, is developing a fully functioning, thoroughly characterised, quantum network (QLAN) linking heterogeneous nodes across its site. It will make this testbed available to users for testing hardware and applications. NPL will lead on the testing and security evaluation of the testbed and collaborate widely on the technology development.

PhD position summary/title: Safe and Sustainable Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Using Digital Twins, Computer-Assisted Retrosynthesis, and Life Cycle Assessment
This PhD project aims to advance Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) pharmaceutical manufacturing by integrating cutting-edge methodologies, including computer-assisted retrosynthesis, end-to-end digital twins, and life cycle assessment (LCA). A central component of the research will be the development of digital twins to simulate the entire production process, from raw materials to final product formulation. These models will enable rapid scenario testing, predictive analysis, and early decision-making, thereby reducing experimental workload and accelerating development timelines.

PhD position summary/title: Structural durability in the Net Zero age: Effect of degradation
The aim of this project is to analyse the effect of hydrogen and Low Carbon Intensity (LCI) fuels on degradation of surfaces exposed to such harsh environments and, subsequently, structural integrity and durability of affected components and structures. The main challenge is assessing the transition between a relatively slow process of degradation and a rapid deterioration of structural integrity due to formation of macroscopic defects.

PhD position summary/title: Technology qualification of electrolysers
The goal of this project is to evaluate and mitigate technological risks associated with electrolysers to ensure their safe and efficient deployment at an industrial scale.
Electrolysers may play an important role in the future energy system. However the necessary adoption of electrolysers has been slow, limiting the accumulated relevant operational experience for confidence in the technology. Thus, prospective project developers are faced with technological risks concerning safety such as gas cross over within stacks, and performance such as efficiency decrease due to degradation, and inability to operate flexibly. This project, conducted in collaboration with SSE plc, will look to understand these, and other risks associated with electrolysers, propose, execute and evaluate activities that will improve confidence that these technologies are qualified for industrial scale deployment.

PhD position summary/title: What is a good MBSE Model? And how do we rapidly develop highly effective models?
Although the development of systems architectures and models has been an established practice for many years, the assessment of the quality of models has relied on expert judgement with no generalised agreement about the qualities that determine whether the model is good or not. The focus of this project is whether the model is good enough for the point in a project’s lifecycle and not whether the model represents a good technical solution.
