PhD position summary/title: PhD Position (f/m/d) – part time (75%)- X-ray Spectroscopy with Quantum Sensors at the KIT Light Source
As part of the interdisciplinary research project QS4Physics, you will work on developing a platform that enables the integration of such sensors into existing synchrotron beamlines at the KIT Light Source.
In addition, you will perform x-ray spectroscopic measurements on applied material systems. These experiments will be conducted using both existing “conventional” x-ray spectrometers and the newly developed quantum sensor systems at the KIT Light Source, both in the soft and hard x-ray regime.
You will collaborate in an interdisciplinary team and contribute to cutting-edge research at the interface between detector physics and materials research.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student / Academic staff member (f/m/d) for the production of cluster- and nanoparticle-based model catalysts
The project is part of the Collaborative Research Center “Tracking the Active Site in Heterogeneous Catalysis” (CRC 1441 TrackAct), funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The goal is to better understand the relationship between the structure and properties of catalysts used in emission control. To this end, you will synthesize atomically precise precious metal clusters and monodisperse nanoparticles with tunable size, shape, and composition, which you will then use as building blocks for the production of defined model catalysts. Based on catalytic tests and in-depth structural characterization, you will derive structure-property relationships for reactions in the field of emission control to develop improved catalysts with low precious metal content in the future.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student Position (f/m/d) Continuous Hydrothermal Synthesis of Magnetic Nanoparticles for Application in Additive Manufacturing of Functional Materials
Continuous hydrothermal synthesis in near- or supercritical water (scH2O 374°C, 22.1MPa) enables the production of highly crystalline particles in a sustainable and environmentally friendly reaction medium. Nanoparticles made of magnetic materials exhibit interesting magnetic properties that depend on their size, shape, and structure. These particles have great potential for various applications in the biomedical and technical fields. As part of the project, you will develop processes for continuously synthesizing highly crystalline, tailored magnetic ferrite nanoparticles with special magnetic properties in supercritical water (scH₂O). Particle formation under scH2O conditions is still poorly understood. Therefore, in cooperation with our project partner, you will monitor the synthesis process in-situ by implementing sensors for electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The magnetic nanoparticles will be implemented in 3D-printed functional materials (polymer composites).

Contribute to the energy transition of our society via enabling new power-to-chemicals/fuels processes. You will join a team that investigates new electrolysis processes for synthesizing valuable fuels and chemicals from the waste product CO₂ and renewable energy. Your research will focus on enabling an efficient electrolysis process including electrode and cell design as well as their optimization. Your work will be interdisciplinary, with experimental analysis and modeling on cell (component) level and product analysis. PhD position summary/title: PhD Research Fellow (f/m/d)
The candidate will have the responsibility to conduct internationally visible research in the joint BMWE funded project “LiquidMining – Recovery of critical metals from natural and anthropogenic fluids”. The focus of our subproject will be on extraction of critical metals from thermal springs using sorbent materials. Your responsibility will be literature research, sampling of industrial fluids and thermal springs mainly in southern Germany, using the data to create a secondary resources map, developing adapted extraction methods on laboratory and field scale, developing combined extraction processes with our industry partners and developing concepts on the subsequent use of end-of-life sorbents. You are expected to present the data on conferences and publish research results in internationally recognized journals.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position (f/m/d) within the DFG-funded research project “Secondary ice production mechanisms: rime splintering and droplet shattering on freezing”
Reliable modeling of cloud processes for weather predictions and climate change projections requires a sound understanding of the ice formation in mixed-phase clouds. Typically, ice particles form via heterogeneous freezing of supercooled cloud droplets containing ice nucleating particles (INPs). Ice crystal concentrations measured inside the clouds are often found to exceed the concentration of INPs by many orders of magnitude. To explain this discrepancy, the Secondary Ice Production (SIP) mechanisms, i.e., processes producing multiple ice particles upon freezing of a single cloud droplet or by fragmentation of existing ice particles, must be studied.

We are seeking a PhD student to join the research project IGWN (Innovative Geothermal-based Heating Networks) to investigate the potential for shallow geothermal energy systems in the German region of Oberschwaben. Your task will be to develop analytical and numerical approaches for quantifying the available amount of heat and cold in the subsurface in 2D and 3D. In this context, you will also deal with spatial uncertainties in the geological and hydrogeological boundary conditions by employing geostatistical methods. Accounting for economic aspects as well, you will develop concepts for geothermal exploration and use, and present these in workshops with local stakeholders.
