PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Experimental Particle Physics on the ATLAS Experiment
As a PhD candidate, you will conduct fundamental research in experimental particle physics, perform data analysis and develop object reconstruction algorithms in the ATLAS experiment. You will become a member of the ATLAS collaboration and will be based in Nijmegen. Furthermore, you will be given the opportunity to spend 10-12 months at CERN in Geneva. Your project will be supervised by Dr Mengqing Wu (Radboud University).
This position is part of a research project called ’Are neutrinos Majorana?’, which is funded by the Dutch Research Council (NWO). The main goal of this project is to search for Majorana neutrinos in the uncovered tau channel at the highest possible masses in the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The project will be conducted in close collaboration with our Nikhef colleagues in Amsterdam.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Thermal Ecology, Ecophysiology or Invasion Biology (two openings)
The aim of the project is to predict effects of the dual threats of climatic warming and the invasion of non-native species on Antarctica’s distinctive marine biodiversity, which includes many endemic species. The project is a collaboration involving leaders in the field of polar marine ecology, thermal ecophysiology and theoretical ecology from Radboud University (RU), the British Antarctic Survey (BAS) and Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile (PUC). Your efforts will both benefit fundamental research and inform management to prevent bioinvasions.
You and the other PhD candidate will be expected to collaborate closely, focusing on the same set of molluscan and crustacean species, but working on different aspects: PhD 1 will quantify thermal tolerance and metabolism, while PhD 2 will measure growth and competitive interactions. Your work will involve field and laboratory studies in remote locations (Southern Chile, Antarctica) as well as lab work in the Netherlands and Cambridge. Furthermore, you will analyse the data, publish the outcomes as lead author in scientific journals and present the main findings at international conferences.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Neuroscience, AI and Medicine – Exploring Neural Mechanisms of Movement
Losing the ability to precisely time movements can lead to debilitating motor disorders. Our research addresses this challenge in two ways:
- We investigate the fundamental neural mechanisms that control movement.
- We explore engineering-based solutions to restore function when these pathways are disrupted.
As a PhD candidate, you will contribute to both aspects, from studying the brain’s control of movement to applying these insights in the development of closed-loop brain–computer interfaces aimed at restoring motor function in models of motor disorder. Some part of the role may involve teaching and up to 0.1 FTE of your time may entail teaching activities.
A fully funded PhD position is available starting in January 2026. You will receive comprehensive training and mentoring within an interdisciplinary and international research environment. PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Gravitational-Wave Astronomy and Massive Stellar Binary Evolution
It has been just over a decade since the first detection of gravitational waves, marking the birth of a new field in astronomy. Since then, the number of detections has grown rapidly: from one, to a few, to hundreds, revealing entire populations of gravitational-wave sources. These signals are produced by black holes and neutron stars, the compact remnants of massive stars.
Many questions on how these populations form remain. To solve this puzzle, we must understand how massive stars are born, interact in binary systems, and how they end their lives as black holes or neutron stars. This will be the topic of this PhD thesis.
As a PhD candidate, you will conduct fundamental research on the evolution of massive binary stars, with a special focus on the systems that give rise to gravitational-wave sources.
This theoretical project will be at the intersection of stellar physics, computational astronomy and an unprecedented amount of data driven by observation. You will learn to run simulations on high-performance computing clusters, ranging from broad parameter studies with rapid binary-population synthesis codes to detailed stellar evolution calculations with 1D stellar evolution codes. The models you develop will be directly linked to new and upcoming observations, including the just-released 4th gravitational-wave observations (O4, released in August 2025) and the Gaia DR4 dataset (expected mid-2026).

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Speech Privacy in Multi-Speaker and Multi-Modal Scenarios
We are seeking a PhD candidate for the joint doctoral training programme on Privacy for Smart Speech Technology (PSST), which is funded by the Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Action. You will receive a joint doctorate from Radboud University and from the University of Lisbon.
As a PhD candidate, you will conduct research on AI techniques for analysing and protecting personal information in speech recordings. Our voices contain information that reveals our identities and also other potentially privacy-sensitive information. Until now, research on speech privacy has focused on single speakers in audio-only scenarios, most often read speech. In this project, we move beyond this focus and closer to real-world scenarios, more specifically, to multi-speaker settings such as meetings or dialogues and also to multi-modal data, including text or video data.
Publishing such data, which is essential to R&D activities, may leak sensitive information, but this area is still under-researched. Specifically, the PhD project aims to identify revealing factors in multi-speaker and multi-modal data and find ways to detect and hide them using natural language processing and audio analysis. We look at anonymisation, but also go beyond to study attributes of speakers, which recent work has identified as an open issue.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Learning to Write and Writing to Learn in the Age of AI
Two PhD research projects are part of a larger project on academic writing in the age of AI. Writing is integral to every academic curriculum, training students to process disciplinary content and to report on their own as well as existing research in a nuanced way. The increasingly widespread availability of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools comes with opportunities but also entails risks for the development of students’ writing skills. This larger two-part project investigates: (1) what it means to learn to write in the age of AI and how this impacts curriculum design and testing (Project I) and (2) to what extent, and under which conditions, AI tools can help or hinder the process of writing to learn disciplinary content (Project II).
Project I contributes to our understanding of writer-AI interaction and delivers research-informed guidelines and materials for learning to write. Project II serves to clarify how AI affects writing tasks’ inherent content and language learning potential and offers research-informed practical recommendations detailing under which conditions AI tools can help or hinder writing to learn language as well as content. You can indicate in your application whether you are applying for the position on Project I or the one on Project II, or state that you are open to being considered for either project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Ethics and Social Philosophy (specialisation: Health)
Are you a highly motivated and passionate PhD candidate in practical philosophy, interested in the phenomenology of health and illness, the philosophy of death and/or patient participation and social justice? Are you interested in examining the deep existential impacts of Long Covid on patients? Then we would encourage you to apply for this PhD position, wherein you will have the opportunity to explore the existential effects of Long Covid through the prism of multi-levelled ‘deadliness’, particularly ‘living death’, social death and suicide ideation. This will be a comparative empirical/practical philosophical project of 4 years’ duration focusing on Germany (North Rhine-Westphalia) and the Netherlands.
As a PhD candidate, your main responsibility will be to produce a PhD monograph about Long Covid patients’ experiences of ‘death’ and ‘deadliness’ This monograph should consist of a critical phenomenological analysis based on a literature review and data collection. This data collection will mainly consist of qualitative interviews and diary exercises with Long Covid patients in the Netherlands and Germany (NRW), which will be coded and analysed. Furthermore, together with your supervisor, you will co-author 2 public opinion pieces and 2 academic articles. And, towards the end of the project, you and your supervisor will also summarise the findings of your monograph in a high-quality policy brief (in German, English and Dutch) and the supervisor will take the lead in writing a non-academic book on this topic for a broader audience.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Cold and Controlled Reactive Molecular Collisions
As a PhD candidate, you will be part of the Controlled Chemical Reactions group led by Jolijn Onvlee. Our research group investigates reactive collisions between state-selected atoms and molecules with exceptional precision and in unexplored energy regimes. We use a crossed molecular beam machine with a Zeeman decelerator, which enables precise control over the velocities and quantum states of atoms or molecules prior to the reaction. By combining this with resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionisation and velocity map imaging, we can probe the reaction products in high detail. This powerful experimental approach gives us the opportunity to get detailed information about the dynamics of molecular collisions.
In this project, you will perform reactive scattering experiments, design and implement advanced detection techniques, analyse data, and carry out numerical trajectory simulations of deceleration and scattering processes. You will have the opportunity to work with state-of-the-art and world-unique equipment. You will work closely with other team members from various international backgrounds, dividing tasks and tackling problems together. Moreover, you will contribute to teaching activities and help supervise BSc and/or MSc students during their internships with us (10% of your working time).

You will perform multispecies detection in demanding applications such as environmental and exposure monitoring, and in the green hydrogen industry.

It is used to monitor climate change, optimise industrial control, as well as observe important chemical or biological reactions related to life sciences. Among several optical methods for measuring gas concentrations, absorption spectroscopy with broadband, laser-based infrared sources is emerging as a promising and effective tool. In particular, the newly developed high-power intrapulse difference frequency generation (IDFG) based sources extend deep into the mid-infrared wavelength range with unprecedented spectral coverage (2–11.5 µm).

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position: Self-Driving Labs for Physical Chemistry (2 openings)
Chemistry is a science of mixtures. Whether you think of complex formulations for drug delivery to the foam on your cappuccino: the properties of small molecules, polymers and proteins in the mixture together define the key properties of these systems. Predicting these properties by only studying their components might seem impossible… but that is what we aim to do in the Big Chemistry consortium.
The ambition of this project is to establish self-driving laboratories to rapidly measure key physical properties of mixtures of molecules, including solubility, viscosity, and surface or interfacial tension. We will train a range of AI models to allow us to predict these properties from the chemical structure alone. Once established, we will expand the self-driving labs to measure more complex properties such as foaming, phase separation or particle formation, and fine-tune our AI models.
In this project, you will combine a deep knowledge of physical chemistry with robotic systems and AI models. You will learn how to programme advanced robotic systems and how to implement aspects of deep learning and neural networks for chemical property prediction. You will be part of the Big Chemistry consortium and will also be involved in training and teaching BSc and MSc students (10% of your working time).
