PhD position summary/title: PhD Student
Wireless systems are omnipresent in our daily life, but it is far from perfect, especially for professional applications, where stable quality of service with bounded latency, guaranteed packet delivery rate is a must. Today, we still see Wi-Fi coverage is far from uniform, high variations of the Wi-Fi signal strength can be observed at different locations. Co-located Wi-Fi access points sharing the same spectrum compete against each other rather than collaborate to serve users. In this PhD position, you will research solutions to tackle these issues and improve wireless performance and efficiency together with the members of Software-Defined Radio team in IDLab.
- You will enhance WiFi design in view of distributed MIMO, and/or coordinated multi-AP operation (under study in the Wi-Fi 8 standardisation workgroup), using Hardware Description Language on FPGA, based on the open-source openwifi project (https://github.com/open-sdr/openwifi).
- You are also encouraged to design higher networking layer functionality and driver in Linux environment, to fully exploit the distributed MIMO and coordinated multi-AP feature.
- You publish and present results both at international conferences and in scientific journals.
- You will combine theoretical design with experimental proof-of-concept validation by setting up prototyping environments in our test lab considering concrete professional use cases (industry 4.0, mission-critical applications, professional multimedia applications, etc.)
- You will participate in the framework of national and European research projects, and collaborate on a technical level with research partners from industry.
- You will assist in limited educational tasks of the research group.
- This research will lead to a PhD degree. Throughout the complete PhD period, you receive a full-time, attractive salary.

You will prepare a doctoral dissertation under the supervision of Professors Marco Caracciolo, Stef Craps, and Elly McCausland. Candidates are invited to propose their own research project, situated firmly within the environmental humanities and combining theoretical exploration with textual analysis.
We seek candidates whose research intersects meaningfully with the research domains represented across our supervisory team. These include:
- Narrative theory and narratology, particularly in relation to ecological and environmental questions.
- Memory and affect studies, with attention to how cultural narratives address experiences of crisis, loss, and transformation.
- Children’s and young adult literature, including its engagements with risk, trust, imagination, and the environment.

(03) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral fellow
Large, deep neural networks have demonstrated significant success in effectively distilling information from massive datasets. However, their effectiveness is limited by several drawbacks, including being data- and resource-intensive, often being non-interpretable, and being highly brittle towards shifts in data distribution and changes in the problem domain. This fully-funded three-year project, with the possible further extension to four years, will focus on leveraging the next generation of evolutionary algorithms to evolve efficient, robust, and interpretable predictors and data processing algorithms. A crucial aspect will be maintaining a pool of diverse, complementary models that can be adapted to new problems through continuous learning. We will develop this methodology to address several applications within the life sciences, with a special interest in computer vision applications, with a particular emphasis on microbial resistance. This project will be done at the KERMIT research unit at Ghent University.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral fellow
You will develop new physicochemical processes for footwear recycling. The starting point are shoes containing combinations of condensation and crosslinked polymers, and the main idea is to use a minimal amount of solvents and reagents to get a maximum amount of (pure) polymers and monomers from the recycling process. As chemical interactions are relevant for both dissolution as well as depolymerisation/decrosslinking focus is on the interaction between solvents and reagents with the different polymers and chemical bonds present in footwear. This PhD topic will combine COSMO-RS molecular models, with diffusion experiments, as well as kinetics of dissolution and reactions. Apart from the separation experiments, the DC will also develop analytical procedures to follow the process. In case possible, a last chapter would focus on the downstream process engineering of the polymer/monomer purification steps.
The main objectives are:
- To gain physicochemical insights in the interaction between polymers present in footwear and solvents/reagents
- To optimize suitable analytics to follow the physicochemical recycling process
- To create energy efficient dissolution and low-temperature depolymerization pathways for high quality footwear recycling , including downstream processing to remove impurities from the polymer/monomer

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral fellow
You will introduce and develop dynamic/reversible chemistry for elastomeric materials in footwear that allow actually used unrecyclable elastomers to become fully recyclable. The PhD research will also focus on debondable adhesives. The project will start with the preparation of smart and cheap building blocks, followed by their crosslinking with readily available and industrially relevant compounds. Material evaluations will involve rheology, DSC, TGA, tensile testing, as well as tests for adhesive strength such as lap-shear testing.
The main objectives are:
- To investigate suitable dynamic covalent (DCC) chemistries for their compatibility with polymer manufacturing processes for shoe design.
- Introduce the best-performing dynamic chemistry directly into a shoe rubber matrix for the production of the next generation of recyclable shoe rubbers.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded
PhD position summary/title: Doctoral fellow
This PhD research aims to investigate beyond state-of-the art technology enablers for the next-generation cellular paradigm, called 6G. The main focus will be on Radio Access Network (RAN) optimisation mechanisms within the Open-RAN (O-RAN) framework to meet strict and diverse requirements of emerging use cases in the 6G era.
The research objectives include (but are not limited to): O-RAN based architectural integration of 5G/6G Terrestrial/Non-Terrestrial and Wi-Fi, development of advanced algorithms and optimisation techniques to enhance the performance and efficiency of the integrated RAN, spectrum management strategies for efficient utilisation of wireless resources and interference/jamming avoidance and methods for optimal unicast and multicast/broadcast transmissions, often empowering cutting edge AI/ML technologies such as Agentic AI, Wireless Physical Layer Foundation Model, etc..
The candidate will be validating and evaluating the developed mechanisms utilizing simulation tools and in-house cutting-edge cellular/Wi-Fi testbeds and tools.
Your main tasks will include:
• Studying state-of-the-art techniques and benchmarks in the domain of the next generation O-RAN based wireless networks (including 6G both Terrestrial Network (TN) and Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN)(Satellite), and Wi-Fi)
• Design and implement novel techniques for next generation cellular communications, including among others RAN optimization with a focus on intelligent radio resource allocation, interference/jamming avoidance, cross-technology optimization (6G TN/NTN, Wi-Fi), empowering cutting edge AI/ML technologies such as Agentic AI, Wireless Physical Layer Foundation Model, etc.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral fellow
Solid Oxide Electrolysis Cells (SOECs) operate at high temperatures (typically 700–900 °C), enabling superior thermodynamic efficiency and faster kinetics compared to low-temperature electrochemical CO₂ reduction methods. Unlike other routes, SOECs can directly convert CO₂ into CO or syngas using renewable electricity with higher current densities and lower overpotentials, making them ideal for industrial-scale applications. Their integration with downstream catalytic upgrading allows for efficient production of high-value hydrocarbons like ethylene, offering a promising pathway for fully decarbonized polymer precursors.
Job description includes;
- Design and optimize Perovskites (doped and in-situ exsolved) for enhanced OER in solid oxide electrolysis process to reduce CO₂ into syngas precursors.
- Develop and characterize copper-based nano catalysts and bimetallic catalytic systems for efficient C–C coupling into ethylene.
- Collaborate closely with BASF (polymer producer) and VIRECA (market implementation) during industrial secondments.
- Perform techno-economic and environmental assessments in coordination with other SCARPA doctoral researchers.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral fellow
You will produce a digital twin of the footwear metabolism in the EU. Ghent University has previously developed a sorting and recycling model for packaging. The model will now be produced for footwear in which individual representative footwear product types are included. This means that split factors (separation efficiencies) of products and materials in sorting and recycling unit operations are gathered and implemented in a matrix based model. On these physical flow factors, also other aspects are added such as energy consumption, labour, capital cost, etc. This kind of model is then combined with an agent based mode (ABM) to allow predicting the behavior of value chain actors on different collection, sorting and recycling scenarios and costs.
The main objectives are:
- To create a digital twin of the European footwear metabolism that allows to model future Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR)scenarios.
- Firstly, the collection, sorting and recycling processes for footwear are implemented in the matrix model based on split factors
- Second, costs and carbon footprint is added
- Afterwards, an Agent Based Model is linked to this with different agents such as producers, brand owners, retailers, consumers and policy makers, and their behavior is included in the model depending
- Model different potential future scenarios

You will join the Laboratory of Integrative Metabolomics, an established research group with extensive experience in both experimental and computational metabolomics.
The current focus of the computational branch of our research group is on improving the data preprocessing pipeline for metabolomics, with a specific emphasis on data preprocessing of liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) experiments (e.g., De Graeve et al. 2023, Analytica Chimica Acta; Vangeenderhuysen et al. 2023, 2025, Analytical Chemistry; Hughes et al. 2025, Analytical Chemistry). In your PhD research, you will continue this line of work, specifically by critically evaluating and further optimizing existing components of the preprocessing pipeline, such as peak detection, retention time alignment, and data normalization. This will help reduce structural sources of variability, thereby increasing the reliability and reproducibility of downstream analyses.
To achieve this, you will combine in-depth data analysis of both in-house and publicly available experimental datasets, along with simulated data to support systematic evaluation. Ultimately, you will develop innovative, user-friendly, and robust computational tools for metabolomics data analysis.
In addition, you will support the data analysis of our large-scale in-house generated experimental datasets, with a focus on research in human and veterinary health.
You will condense your findings in scientific publications and present your work regularly, both within the research group and at conferences, with the goal of ultimately obtaining a PhD degree based on this work.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral fellow
We are looking for a talented and motivated PhD student with an interest in translational and immunological research in the field of rheumatic diseases. You will join the research group of Prof. Dirk Elewaut and Prof. Koen Venken at the VIB Center for Inflammation Research – Ghent University. Our multidisciplinary and international team of clinicians and fundamental scientists strives to better understand the underlying disease processes in rheumatic diseases, with a general focus on studying potential alterations in barrier organs (gut, skin, lungs) in relation to the development and/or progression of joint pathology.
The PhD project will specifically focus on the role of T cells in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), one of the most common autoimmune diseases. One of the strongest environmental factors for the development of RA is smoking. However, how smoking influences the lung environment in genetically predisposed individuals, ultimately contributing to joint disease, is largely unknown. Our team recently demonstrated that smoking can induce the formation of potentially pathogenic T cells in the lungs of early RA patients, as these cells were also found in inflamed joints, potentially contributing to disease progression (PMID: 39521450). The aim of the current project is to further investigate the role of these T cells (as well as other immune and stromal cells) and their association with the development of RA. This will be achieved by analyzing a unique collection of patient samples and searching for the underlying disease mechanisms in an experimental mouse model. You will utilize state-of-the-art immunological and cell-molecular techniques, including multi-parameter flow cytometry and single-cell RNA sequencing. The final objective of the research is to obtain a PhD.
