(02) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc summary/title: Postdoctoral position – Co-evaluating bio-inputs for Smallholder Farmers in Kenya

A new farmer-based agroecology innovation research initiative (Agroecology Academy – Africa) has been established at ETH Zurich with a parallel base in Western Kenya to contribute with the latest insights into agroecological science. It will investigate easily adoptable solutions to improve the farmers’ situation by enhancing soil fertility, crop productivity, income, farming system resilience and agricultural sustainability in general. It will act as a bridge between research and practice by connecting agricultural stakeholders (i.e. smallholder farmers, extension specialist, food processors, etc.) and academics. Besides delivering excellent research, a strong focus will be on achieving impact on the ground and thus contributing to the smallholder farmers’ livelihood. The initiative’s work will focus on three key areas: farmer-centred research, translation of research into action, and knowledge exchange, training and education. To further leverage project outcomes and to scale it to additional regions and communities, universal principles will be identified in order to apply them across the African continent.

(03) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Researcher at Construction Heritage and Preservation

The Professorship of Construction Heritage and Preservation engages with theoretical and practical challenges of methodical collecting, assessing and preserving of monuments. It is affiliated with the Institute for Preservation and Construction History (IDB) as well as the Institute for Technology in Architecture (ITA).

Knowledge of traditional construction methods, materials, architectural design principles and building processes is essential for a professional and responsible handling of historic buildings. With regard to the future development of the building stock it seems equally important to consider younger and even current processes. New building materials, construction methods and “trends” are increasingly affecting architecture and an accelerated implementation of new ideas and technologies can be recognised in the building sector. Currently, there is a lack of knowledge about the aging and reparability of such new constructions and research on long-term consequences for the building stock seems inadequate.

Research focusses on diverse building stocks, both older and younger (as well as very young), questions of their value as monuments and challenges concerning their conservation. Within this context, the structurally outstanding engineering works in Switzerland as well as the built examples of newly developed construction processes and methods are of special interest. Teaching activities include elective courses and core seminars which allow students to study and discuss current issues in-depth. The lecture concentrates on the theoretical and practical basics of preservation. Furthermore, the professorship offers the academic continuing education programs which comprehensively and methodologically combine high academic standards with practical relevance and impart specific professional skills.

Deadline : May 31st, 2026

(04) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position in light multiplexed, fiber-based artificial sensorimotor network

The introduction of fiber optics in the 1970s has revolutionized the telecommunications industry upon the replacement of copper wires and played a major role in the advent of the Information Age – One high bandwidth fiber optic cable can replace thousands of electrical links to transmit the same amount of information. As a parallel to the thriving fields of soft devices and robots controlled by electrical signals, soft optics is emerging as a new platform that uses the modulation of light in soft matter to encode multifunctionalities in the optical path.

The focus of this project is to expand both actuation and sensing capacities with light. The project will create an artificial sensorimotor network with densely distributed actuators and sensors similar to the biological neuromasculature. The first part of the project will develop a single soft optical fiber with distributed multimodal actuators that are also self-sensing. The second part will study grouped behavior of these “muscle bundles” to enable muscle coordination for complex/adaptive/efficient movements.

(07) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoc position: Production-induced seismicity in fractured reservoirs

Geothermal energy projects can induce seismicity during both fluid injection and fluid production through by complex hydromechanical processes in fractured rock. (11) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Postdoctoral Position: Mechanotyping of Complex Cellular Systems

Cells are mechanically heterogeneous systems composed of proteins, membranes, and compartments with distinct physical properties. In parallel, they continuously sense and respond to diverse mechanical cues from their environment, including adhesion, stiffness, tension, shear, pressure, and confinement. These cues are integrated across wide spatial and temporal scales, from nanometers to tissues, to regulate collective cellular behavior. Mechanobiology seeks to understand how cells, tissues, and organoids perceive, process, and remodel mechanical signals, and how these processes govern fundamental biological functions such as homeostasis, growth, differentiation, migration, development, and apoptosis. Despite major advances, a multiscale understanding of how mechanical information is generated and integrated in complex multicellular systems remains limited. Progress in the field requires the development of engineered multicellular models as mechanical reference systems, new tools to quantitatively measure and manipulate mechanics across scales, and theoretical frameworks to interpret mechanobiological complexity. This postdoctoral project addresses these challenges by combining model systems, advanced mechanical probing, and integrative analysis to elucidate how mechanical properties regulate biological function across molecular, cellular, and multicellular levels, ultimately supporting advances in mechanodiagnostics and mechanomedicine.

(16) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Post-Doctoral Research in Comparative Fungal Genomics and Transposon Diversity

Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) enables the spread of pathogenicity genes between microbes and can therefore drive the emergence of novel diseasesIn pathogenic fungi, an emerging global threat to both humans and our crops, the mechanisms that facilitate HGT remain unknown. Recent work has uncovered a novel group of giant transposons called Starships, which have moved virulence, metal tolerance and other fitness associated genes horizontally between fungal species. This post-doctoral positions is focused on the plant pathogenic fungi, Bipolaris sorokiniana, Parastagonospora nodorum and Pyrenophora tritici-repentis that all carry the fungal virulence gene ToxA, which is nested inside a smaller passenger transposon called ToxTA. This transposon has been captured independently by two different Starship transposons, Sanctuary and Horizon with evidence of other captures in other fungal species. We seek to understand the evolutionary history and horizontal transfer of the ToxTA transposon in natural populations of all fungal species in which it is found. This includes over 300 publicly accessible genomes as well as several dozen long-read assemblies from the lab’s internal collection. This position aims to synthesise all available information from these natural fungal isolates to build hypotheses for which genetic features are essential for horizontal transfer.
