PhD position summary/title: PhD position in the Department of Biology
Department of Chemistry at Utrecht University and the Institute of Marine Research (IMR, Bergen, Norway), is looking for an enthusiastic scholar wanting to do a PhD on the AES-financed project “Induced sterility in farmed salmon – a sustainable approach to improve welfare and performance” (project leader Jan Bogerd). Your primary task will be to carry out research in the context of this project to solve salmon aquaculture issues associated with genetic introgression and precocious male puberty to further enhance salmon aquaculture sustainability and efficiency. In this project, you will develop approaches based on nanobody-drug conjugates to render salmon sterile. In addition, you are expected to carry out some work as a teaching assistant within the department.
Deadline of PhD Position: 15 May 2021.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in Immunopharmacology
We offer a PhD position for a curiosity driven candidate in this Longfonds/TKI-LSH funded project. The research builds on our previous findings that dietary non-digestible oligosaccharides suppress airway inflammation and enhance corticosteroid efficacy. In this PhD project we will address not only how a combination of specific fermentable fiber and beneficial bacteria can prevent and/or treat allergic asthma, but also if this can inhibit corticosteroid resistance via modifications of the microbiome and epigenome.
Deadline of PhD Position: 31 March 2021.

PhD position summary/title: PhD candidate on equine gait analysis
The PhD project is a multidisciplinary research project on on-site wireless monitoring of horses for advanced and real-time equine locomotion and performance analysis. The focus is on the validation and clinical application of advanced sensor-based gait analysis and heart rate monitoring that can be used to assess lameness and performance in horses and, potentially, other animal species. The project builds on earlier work and aims principally at the further development of sensor technology for monitoring horses during training and competition

PhD position summary/title: Two PhD positions on methane and ammonium dynamics in marine systems.
The Department of Earth Sciences at Utrecht University, Utrecht, and the Department of Microbiology at Radboud University, Nijmegen, in the Netherlands have an opening for two fully funded PhD projects to work on the ERC Synergy project MARIX for 4 years. MARIX stands for ‘Methane and Ammonium Removal In redoX transition zones’. The project focuses on the discovery of new microbial and geochemical pathways of removal of methane and ammonium in sediments and the water column of coastal marine systems.

PhD position summary/title: PhD position in integrative structural biology of herpesvirus-host interactions.
We are looking for a talented PhD candidate to study herpesvirus-host interactions in neuronal cells using an integrative structural biology approach. You will focus on the interaction of the herpesvirus fusion protein gB with Myelin Associated Glycoprotein using modern tools in structural biology such as cryo electron microscopy and mass spectrometry, as well as biophysical and cell biological techniques. Moreover, you will construct interaction and imaging probes to identify additional interactors on the surface of neuronal cells and image gB-receptor interactions in a cellular context.
Deadline of PhD Position: 29 March 2021
