PhD position summary/title: PhD Top-up scholarship: Integration of Indigenous knowledge into post-mine land use planning.

The project will seek to investigate effective ways for knowledge sharing between customary landowners and hydrogeologists. It is critical that knowledge sharing recognises the locally based form of Indigenous knowledge and respects protocols in relation to who has the right to share cultural knowledge. The approach taken will create a methodology that can be used across Australia to better combine traditional and hydrogeological knowledge, aiming at providing better groundwater outcomes for traditional owners and country. Ultimately, this will lead to groundwater investigations and management plans integrating traditional knowledge as the standard approach in Australia.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship: Responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Automated Decision Making (ADM) in Social Services.

Two scholarships are available for high calibre students to undertake research on a wide range of PhD projects from diverse academic disciplines examining responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Automated Decision Making (ADM) in Social Services.

  • In what ways do AI/ADM in social services differentially impact on diverse populations?
  • How can we build AI/ADM that does not reproduce bias and disadvantage?
  • What counts as responsible AI for diverse and marginalised peoples?\
  • What are the possibilities for co-creation of ADM/AI with social services users?
  • What might be the policy, legal and governance reforms required to ensure responsible AI/ADM in social services?

(04) Fully Funded PhD Position

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship: MRI sequence programming and deep learning reconstruction.

We are currently recruiting two PhD students to innovate on novel MRI methods that can be eventually applied to neuroscience and neurological diseases. Our lab is focusing on these research topics:

  1. MR image processing through advanced optimization techniques and deep learning To develop advanced image reconstruction methods for MRI post-processing techniques, such as Quantitative Susceptibility Mapping (QSM) and accelerated MRI acquisition reconstruction. Particularly through (1) image optimization/regularization, compressed sensing, and (2) deep learning.
  2. Fast, multi-parametric, and quantitative MRI acquisition methods at ultra-high field To significantly reduce the total scan time for each subject, by (1) accelerating individual scans with parallel imaging techniques at ultra-high field, and (2) designing novel MRI sequences that produce multi-contrast weighted images and multi-parametric quantitative maps from a single MR acquisition.
  3. Brain imaging applications in neuroscience and neurological diseases to apply comprehensive image analysis on different MRI methods to better understand neuroscience, such as brain development in children and structural and functional connectivity of the brain, as well as some of the neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease/Dementia, Parkinson’s disease, Multiple Sclerosis, Schizophrenia, and Stroke.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Scholarship: Machine learning in adaptive brain stimulation.

This PhD project will use machine learning towards developing adaptive deep brain stimulation, with a focus on application for Parkinson’s disease. Deep brain stimulation is an established therapy for treating movement disorder symptoms and is now being developed to address unmet needs in epilepsy, depression and Alzheimer’s disease. Further personalising the therapy using adaptive techniques will be critical for increasing patient uptake, application to new indications, and improving both the patient experience and clinicians’ workload management.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship: Applying graph theory techniques to studying the evolutionary dynamics of genetic networks.

The overall aim of this project is to use mathematical techniques to study properties of genetic networks for plants. The goal is to explore relationships within the network to map genotypes to phenotypes providing valuable information for crop management, and for understanding how natural populations adapt to novel conditions. In particular, genomes for individuals will be associated with vertices in a graph and relationships within and between distinct genomes represented as weighted edges. In this framework the underlying problem will be studied as complex descriptions and dynamics of mathematical networks where techniques from graph theory, linear algebra and computational approaches will reveal properties of the underlying genetic network, and its relationship to crop and natural variation.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship: Cognitive development of foresight.

Foresight—our capacity to think about the future—is a hallmark of human cognition and key to our dominance on the planet. We can travel mentally in time and adjust behaviour in light of what we foresee; assessing opportunities and risks, pursuing skills and knowledge we anticipate will be useful, and plotting a path to future success and happiness. This project aims to contribute to a better understanding of how young children begin to develop foresight and control over the future.

A working knowledge of developmental psychology and research on mental time travel would be of benefit to someone working on this project.

PhD position summary/title: PhD scholarship – Antibiotic Conjugates: Joining Together to Fight Antimicrobial Resistance.

With a near-empty antibiotic pipeline and growing antimicrobial resistance, there is a global search for novel approaches to treat infections. This project will investigate three innovative new approaches to address this urgent unmet need, all based on a core concept where existing antibiotics are functionalised so they have a chemical handle that can be used to attach other moieties. It builds on an advanced platform of bespoke derivatised antibiotics that we have developed over the past five years. We are looking for a proficient and enthusiastic synthetic chemist interested in medicinal chemistry to work on different aspects of the overall project
