PhD position summary/title: PhD position – Multi-disciplinary application of data science approaches to investigate autoimmune thyroid disease in precision medicine.

The project will make use of state-of-the art data science approaches to study the (genomic) epidemiology and pathophysiology of AITD, which is one of the most common endocrine conditions worldwide. Having AITD increases the risk for adverse cardiovascular, metabolic, psychological, reproductive conditions as well as thyroid cancer and other immune-mediated diseases, while affecting the quality of life of the patients. We will use a multi-disciplinary and integrative approach combining various data types. The project will (1) define disease co-morbidities and patient profiles in multiple large datasets such as the Danish registries involving longitudinal analyses, and (2) investigate the genomics of AITD and its co-morbidities to more precisely understand the relevant risk factors and biological mechanisms, and hence, offer novel approaches for more personalized healthcare to the patients, most of whom require life-long treatment, as well as to the individuals at risk.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Neurodevelopmental disorders at Department of Veterinary and Animal Sciences.

Induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) can be differentiated into brain organoids (BOs). When cultured under favourable conditions the BOs can mimic the complexity of initial human brain development as well as phenotypes of different brain diseases. Brain development is affected by extrinsic and intrinsic signals, including metabolites and functional cellular regulators, resulting in significant changes over time in the proteome including post-translational modifications (PTMs). Perturbation of these regulatory mechanisms during brain development leads to malfunctions, ultimately paving the way for devastating neurological diseases. In the present project we will develop BOs from iPSCs including iPSCs derived from healthy individuals and patients suffering schizophrenia to characterize the cellular signalling processes underlying early brain development in healthy and diseased conditions. We will focus on the molecular processes controlling release of neurotransmitters between mature neurons. In addition, BOs representing schizophrenia will be developed for mapping the causative disease-related pathways and to identify key pathological mechanisms. The project will use technologies such as proteomics, PTMomics, metabolomics, transcriptomics, imaging, electrophysiology and bioinformatics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship available in metabolomics.

The PhD stipend is financed by a recently granted VILLUM Investigator project on Plant Transportomics. Transport of metabolites across cellular borders is essential for plant fitness and survival, and has proven important in controlling key quality traits in agriculture. Yet, the function of thousands of transporters is largely unknown. We will create a first-of-its-kind transportomics database that will grow to include substrate spectra of every transporter in the model plant Arabidopsis thaliana, thale cress. Moreover, we will decode the chemical language of plants by mapping the metabolites exuded and the transporters present at the root and leaf epidermis during stress conditions when intense communication occurs. The knowledge gained and molecular tools generated will have application in sustainable agriculture.

About The University of Copenhagen, Denmark – Official Website

The University of Copenhagen is a public research university in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in 1479, the University of Copenhagen is the second-oldest university in Scandinavia, and ranks as one of the top universities in the Nordic countries and Europe.

Its establishment sanctioned by Pope Sixtus IV, the University of Copenhagen was founded by Christian I of Denmark as a Catholic teaching institution with a predominantly theological focus. In 1537, it was re-established by King Christian III as part of the Lutheran Reformation. Up until the 18th century, the university was primarily concerned with educating clergymen. Through various reforms in the 18th and 19th century, the University of Copenhagen was transformed into a modern, secular university, with science and the humanities replacing theology as the main subjects studied and taught.

The University of Copenhagen consists of six different faculties, with teaching taking place in its four distinct campuses, all situated in Copenhagen. The university operates 36 different departments and 122 separate research centres in Copenhagen, as well as a number of museums and botanical gardens in and outside the Danish capital. The University of Copenhagen also owns and operates multiple research stations around Denmark, with two additional ones located in Greenland. Additionally, The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the public hospitals of the Capital and Zealand Region of Denmark constitute the conglomerate Copenhagen University Hospital.

A number of prominent scientific theories and schools of thought are namesakes of the University of Copenhagen. The famous Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics was conceived at the Niels Bohr Institute, which is part of the university. The Department of Political Science birthed the Copenhagen School of Security Studies, which is also named after the university. Others include the Copenhagen School of Theology and the Copenhagen School of Linguistics.
