PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Theoretical Astrophysics
Gravitational-wave astronomy has revolutionized science. In this project, we aim to explore the influence of gravitational waves in the dynamics of several systems. This includes the excitation of the normal modes of pulsars and their effects on rotation of stars, the heating up of the orbits of loosely bound systems (as wide binaries or Oort belt objects), influence the dynamics of triple systems, influence into populations of binaries (since for resonant binaries the effect is larger). This will allow us to explore new bands for stochastic GW backgrounds, though transient events may also be relevant.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Medical Image Analysis
The student will be employed within the Deep Consciousness project. The aim is to develop machine learning methods that can predict the outcome for unconscious patients (typically following trauma) in the intensive care unit at the hospital – can they regain consciousness? This prediction may support medical treatment decisions including whether to continue life support. We will focus on image analysis of the serial CT scans that are routinely being acquired in the ICU. We will build on deep learning methodologies, likely augmenting CNNs to gracefully harvest the information in the serial CT data. We will collaborate closely with the clinical partners (in particular Daniel Kondziella), ensuring that the methodologies directly address the clinical needs.

PhD position summary/title: PhD fellowship in Experimental Condensed Matter Physics
The overall aim of the project is to investigate the connection between superconductivity and lattice/magnetic structure and dynamics in the superconducting material. The project involves performing neutron experiments at leading instruments worldwide, The strength of the neutron scattering signals from these material types is inherently weak. For this reason, the project will also have much focus on understanding and improving neutron scattering set-ups. This is particularly relevant for background-sensitive experiments at high pressures. In addition, the project includes design, simulation, and commissioning of the neutron spectrometer BIFROST at ESS. This spectrometer is presently under construction and will be commissioned by the supervisor group towards the end of the PhD project.

The PhD project will be part of a larger project aimed at identifying therapeutics for fibrosis by targeting G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs). Fibrosis is essentially formation of scar tissue as a result of inappropriate healing following inflammation and can form in any tissue and cause dysfunction. Fibrotic disease is responsible for an enormous and increasing burden to our society and an estimated 45% of deaths in the developed world. Liver and lungs are examples of organs where fibrotic disease is especially problematic. Liver fibrosis is a serious condition that recently was found to affect 21% of diabetic patients. Lung fibrosis, an important component of diseases such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and COVID-19, is equally important. No effective therapeutics exist for these diseases.

About The University of Copenhagen, Denmark – Official Website
The University of Copenhagen is a public research university in Copenhagen, Denmark. Founded in 1479, the University of Copenhagen is the second-oldest university in Scandinavia, and ranks as one of the top universities in the Nordic countries and Europe.
Its establishment sanctioned by Pope Sixtus IV, the University of Copenhagen was founded by Christian I of Denmark as a Catholic teaching institution with a predominantly theological focus. In 1537, it was re-established by King Christian III as part of the Lutheran Reformation. Up until the 18th century, the university was primarily concerned with educating clergymen. Through various reforms in the 18th and 19th century, the University of Copenhagen was transformed into a modern, secular university, with science and the humanities replacing theology as the main subjects studied and taught.
The University of Copenhagen consists of six different faculties, with teaching taking place in its four distinct campuses, all situated in Copenhagen. The university operates 36 different departments and 122 separate research centres in Copenhagen, as well as a number of museums and botanical gardens in and outside the Danish capital. The University of Copenhagen also owns and operates multiple research stations around Denmark, with two additional ones located in Greenland. Additionally, The Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences and the public hospitals of the Capital and Zealand Region of Denmark constitute the conglomerate Copenhagen University Hospital.
A number of prominent scientific theories and schools of thought are namesakes of the University of Copenhagen. The famous Copenhagen Interpretation of quantum mechanics was conceived at the Niels Bohr Institute, which is part of the university. The Department of Political Science birthed the Copenhagen School of Security Studies, which is also named after the university. Others include the Copenhagen School of Theology and the Copenhagen School of Linguistics.
