PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN CYBERSECURITY-PRESERVING OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHMS
The PhD project aims to develop methods for detecting whether a cyber-attack takes place and pinpointing (isolating) the attack’s exact location.
The anticipated approach leans upon fault detection techniques and safety verification methods known in control engineering. In short, the idea is to use a physical model that predicts the expected evolution and compare it with the measurements. If a fault occurs, the discrepancy between the prediction and the actual situation is observed. The nominal distribution is compared with the distribution extracted from the measurements. The discrepancy between these two is a metric of how severe the attack is. We compute the probability of the attack and intend to use classification techniques known in machine learning to determine the software code under attack. We will use three types of information in the detection algorithm: sensor data, dynamical models (hydraulic, mechanical, electrical), and network traffic data. The detection algorithms will be implemented using a cyber-secure protocol, e.g., multiparty computation.

PhD position summary/title: ONE OR MORE PHD STIPENDS IN MACHINE LEARNING CONCEPTS FOR 6G AIR INTERFACE
This PhD study will be run in close cooperation with Nokia Bell Labs, and aims at exploring the potential of ML solutions for the physical layer of future wireless systems. This may include solutions for multi-antenna systems, communication over harsh time and frequency dispersive channels, flexible waveforms, and optimized retransmission schemes. The main objective is to design techniques that overcome state-of-the art “hand-crafted” technologies in terms of spectral efficiency and/or complexity, paving the way to intelligent self-learned 6th Generation (6G) systems. Active dissemination of the research findings via international conferences and high-quality journals is expected. Also, the research outcome is expected to impact future standardization of novel 6G technologies.

PhD position summary/title: ONE OR MORE PHD STIPENDS IN EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN 5G-CONNECTED ROBOTS
The fourth industrial revolution – or Industry 4.0 (I4.0), will introduce major shifts in the way that products will be manufactured in the future. By integrating different Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), Industrial Internet-of-Things (IIoT) technologies and cloud computing; the factories of the future will be equipped with highly flexible manufacturing equipment also offering a high reliability, thereby increasing the overall production output and cost efficiency. Within this context, the PhD study will focus on the design and development of 5G-enabled autonomous mobile robotic systems (5G AMR-S), based on the integration of three main technologies: 1) 5G Edge-Cloud, 2) autonomous mobile robots and robotic manipulators, and 3) Digital Twin. The resulting system will connect shop-floor assists (e.g., AMRs, robotic manipulators, forklifts, production lines, humans) to an edge-cloud platform by means of 5G technology. Vendor-specific fleet management systems will be implemented on the edge cloud, controlling a set of associated mobile robots. On-top, an inter-fleet management system will be integrated which coordinates the different fleets and forms an interface to the overall business systems (ERP, MES, WMS). To support the coordination of multiple robots (from the same as well as different vendors) a digital twin will be implemented. Based on real-time data from the shop-floor, this will constantly update a dynamic “common world map” which can be accessed by the fleet managers to prevent collision and optimize robot usage.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN RENEWABLE ENERGY SYSTEM INTEGRATION
In the section of Chemical Engineering, a PhD stipend is available with the provisional project 100% renewable energy system integration. Denmark has committed to a 100% renewable energy supply by 2050. The PhD position will focus on the 100% renewable energy system integration across different renewable energy sources. The synergy and conflictions between different renewable energy sources will be identified from an overall system level. Biomass utilization, solar/wind energy, energy storage, and power-to-X are four pillars of the 100% renewable energy systems in the future. However, the design and operation of the overall system planned as a whole is a big challenge due to the multidisciplinary nature of this problem. This project will perform the cross-sector process integration, intensification and optimization to fully exploit the advantages and circumvent the weaknesses of each sector.
