PhD position summary/title: 2 PhD student positions in Particle Physics

The new PhD students will work with both technical work for detector development and analysis of data from the ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The ATLAS group in Lund is involved in the ATLAS upgrade of the track detector (ITk strips) and the students will be able to participate actively in this work. In addition to this, there are two analysis projects:

Project 1: Develop and use new GPU- and other accelerator-based data processing methods for searching for dark matter using real-time analysis, and contribute to the ATLAS activities to transition to the modern software that uses the most advanced computer technologies. The objectives are to investigate relevant modern data analysis algorithms, such as those that use machine learning for anomaly detection; identify areas of ATLAS software where these algorithms will be most beneficial; implement the algorithms using accelerator-based techniques; and apply them to the search for dark matter.

Project 2: The search for exotic Higgs bosons from lepton interactions. The new data from the LHC at higher intensity and energy in the coming years make it possible to study physics with significant lepton couplings, for example, to observe and measure lepton-lepton scattering directly from the colliding protons, and search for double-charged Higgs bosons proposed as a solution to many of the open questions surrounding the properties of neutrinos. The doctoral student will implement these new signals in the ATLAS simulation, make an initial measurement with Run 3 data, and through the work with the new tracking detector, prepare the lepton measurements in Run 4. Strategies for triggering and identifying leptons are discussed in performance groups.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Biology

This PhD project will use concepts and approaches from evolutionary biology to answer outstanding questions in ecotoxicology.  Although relatively unknown to evolutionary biologists, ecotoxicology is a large field of applied science where much interest lies in the measurement of latent traits that are of interest in evolutionary biology- specifically, species component fitness responses to toxicants (both novel and familiar).  This PhD project will use evolutionary concepts to help understand and predict patterns of toxicant sensitivity evolution.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Aerosol Technology with focus on toxicity of airborne particles

This doctoral work will focus primary on studying toxicity of airborne particles. It will involve experimental work in linking particles’ physicochemical properties with reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation potential. We will explore the role of chemical composition of the core of the particles and organic coating on ROS formation potential. A novel instrument will be built for real time ROS determination. Real time and off-line ways of ROS determination will be used for particles from different sources including candle burning, cooking, e-cigarettes, microplastics, outdoor pollutants (including soot) as well as their mixtures to capture real life cocktail effect, as toxicity of mixtures can be different than of the individual components. A battery of aerosol measurement techniques, including on-line Aerosol Mass Spectrometry will be used to assess the physicochemical properties of the particles. Measurements will be carried out in laboratory, inside occupied residences, in workplaces and outdoors. This doctoral work is multi-disciplinary and will be carried out in close collaboration with experts within toxicology, indoor air chemistry, atmospheric processes, and medicine.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Biology

The aim of this project is to investigate how and why wild populations vary in their evolutionary potential. The rate of evolution is determined by the amount of genetic variation and strength of selection. Although fundamental for the understanding of evolutionary dynamics, we still know very little about natural variation in selection and genetic variation in wild populations, and even less about their covariation. The goal will be to monitor selection and genetic variation in wild populations of green tortoise beetles Cassida viridis over time and space. This insect system enables studies of selection and adaptation not only in the lab, but also in the field in multiple freeranging populations along environmental gradients. The outcomes will increase our capacity to predict evolution and to understand how populations respond when encountering a changing or novel environment.

(21) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD students in Automatic Control

We are now recruiting PhD students for two projects:

1)     Learning in Networks: Structure, Dynamics, and Control  (2-3 students)
Funded by WASP, the Wallenberg AI, Autonomous Systems and Software Program, this project is a collaboration with KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Uppsala University. The project lies in the intersection of network dynamics, machine learning, and control, and addresses theoretical challenges from important applications including telecommunication networks, energy, and sociotechnical systems.

2)     Analysis and synthesis of virtual batteries using distributed control (1 student)
Funded by ELLIIT, the Linköping – Lund Excellence Center in Information Technology. In large-scale systems such as electrical power systems, the need to distribute the implementation, analysis, and synthesis of control systems is essential. This project will focus on making foundational theoretical contributions in the area of distributed control. The objective of the theory is to aid in the design of control algorithms to scalably mimic the functionality of batteries using existing devices in buildings (such as boilers and heat pumps), to help improve stability and performance in power systems with high levels of renewables.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral student in Biology

The aim of the Ph.D. project is to study the relation between different metabolic rates that make up the “metabolic phenotype”. These metabolic rates relate to the life history concepts of maintenance (basal metabolic rate), winter survival (cold-induced peak metabolic rate) and reproductive success (flight-induced metabolic rate). Positive relations between these metabolic rates would indicate differences in individual quality or acquisition rates whereas negative relations would indicate trade-offs – an individual cannot invest in maintenance, winter survival and reproductive success at the same time. The outcome of the project will allow us to make predictions about selection pressures shaping the metabolic phenotype in a changing world.

About Lund University, Scania, Sweden – Official Website

Lund University  is a prestigious university in Sweden and one of northern Europe’s oldest universities. The university is located in the city of Lund in the province of Scania, Sweden. It traces its roots back to 1425, when a Franciscan studium generale was founded in Lund. After Sweden won Scania from Denmark in the 1658 Treaty of Roskilde, the university was officially founded in 1666 on the location of the old studium generale next to Lund Cathedral.

Lund University has nine faculties, with additional campuses in the cities of Malmö and Helsingborg, with 40,000 students in 270 different programmes and 1,300 freestanding courses. The university has some 600 partner universities in nearly 70 countries and it belongs to the League of European Research Universities as well as the global Universitas 21 network. Lund University is consistently ranked among the world’s top 100 universities.

Two major facilities for materials research are in Lund University: MAX IV, a synchrotron radiation laboratory – inaugurated in June 2016, and European Spallation Source (ESS), a new European facility that will provide up to 100 times brighter neutron beams than existing facilities today, to be opened in 2023.

The university centers on the Lundagård park adjacent to the Lund Cathedral, with various departments spread in different locations in town, but mostly concentrated in a belt stretching north from the park connecting to the university hospital area and continuing out to the northeastern periphery of the town, where one finds the large campus of the Faculty of Engineering.
