PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH IN INTEGRATION OF 5G AND NON-TERRESTRIAL NETWORKS FOR EXTENDING BROADBAND CONNECTIVITY IN RURAL AND REMOTE AREAS
Over the last years, the importance and need for broadband and high-speed connectivity has constantly increased. The COVID-19 pandemic has even accelerated this process towards a more connected society. But this holds mainly true for urban communities. In Europe, lack access still persists concerning, mainly, the most rural and remote areas. Those are the most challenging to address since they are the least commercially attractive.
Within this context, the PhD study will explore connectivity solutions aimed at bridging the digital divide, by providing robust, reliable, and secure broadband access for all in rural, agricultural, and remote areas, integrating Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) with terrestrial 5G cellular networks and low-cost Internet of Things (IoT). In particular, the PhD work will focus on the design, developm

PhD position summary/title: TWO PHD SCHOLARSHIPS IN HUMAN-COMPUTER INTERACTION / HUMAN-CENTRED ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (16-22002)
In this project, we will establish a thorough understanding of the needs of citizens in making sense of explanations on algorithmic-driven decisions and contribute a software platform that supports this aim. As such, the project leans heavily on interdisciplinarity, which is expected to be reflected in the profiles of the PhD students in the team. Concretely, we are interested in candidates with profiles ranging from (i) a user-centred focus, including experience in conducting user studies and analysing their results, (ii) a technical focus, including the development of interactive applications and possible experience with artificial intelligence more broadly.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN CYBER SECURITY PRESERVING OPTIMIZATION ALGORITHMS (8-22018)
The PhD project aims to develop methods for detecting whether a cyber-attack takes place and pinpointing (isolating) the attack’s exact location. The anticipated approach leans upon fault detection techniques and safety verification methods known in control engineering.
In short, the idea is to use a physical model that predicts the expected evolution and compare it with the measurements. If a fault occurs, the discrepancy between the prediction and the actual situation is observed. The nominal distribution is compared with the distribution extracted from the measurements. The discrepancy between these two is a metric of how severe the attack is. We compute the probability of the attack and intend to use classification techniques known in machine learning to determine the software code under attack. We will use three types of information in the detection algorithm: sensor data, dynamical models (hydraulic, mechanical, electrical), and network traffic data. The detection algorithms will be implemented using a cyber-secure protocol, e.g., multiparty computation.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN BIOFUELS PRODUCTION FROM WASTE BIOMASS (14-22016)
The PhD project will include optimization of the fermentation process through cultivation techniques and genetic engineering by heterologous expression of carbohydrate active enzymes. Furthermore, the project will include chemical characterization (HPLC, GC-MS, ICP-MS, Dumas Flash, ect.) of the biomass feedstocks and process streams. The biomass will be converted using physio-chemical pre-treatment followed by enzymatic hydrolysis of the biomass to yield fermentable sugars. Two different microbial systems using fungus and larvae will be explored to convert the biomass sugars lipids and then biofuels.

PhD position summary/title: PHD STIPEND IN EXPERIMENTAL CARBON CAPTURE AND UTILIZATION AND ENERGY SYSTEM INTEGRATION (14-22015)
The Danish government has set an ambitious target of 70 % reduction in GHG emissions in Denmark by 2030, and net-zero emissions by 2050 compared to 1990 emission levels. To achieve these targets, limiting CO2 emissions from fossil fuels combustion is not sufficient by itself. While carbon capture and storage (CCS) is seen as the foundation to reach short term targets (in 2025 and 2030), carbon capture and utilization (CCU) together with P2X technologies are considered the key players to reach carbon neutrality by 2050 and negative emissions on the longer term. In a near future, captured CO2 will represent a carbon supply to the society and will be used as raw material to produce green fuels, chemicals, and materials such as plastics and fertilizers. A successful deployment of carbon capture and P2X technologies requires an integrated systemic approach, where integration with the existing energy infrastructure is pivotal.
