PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in Systems Neuroscience

The aim of the doctoral project is to identify and define the role of neurons in the basal ganglia that regulate motivated behaviors and are altered in animal models of Parkinson’s disease. The doctoral student will develop a broad expertise in neuroscience, with expert knowledge in circuits that control motivation and decision-making. The doctoral student will have the opportunity to learn state-of-the-art research skills, and will use a range of molecular, transcriptomics, and in vivo methods to investigate the progressive change in Parkinson’s disease models, and how neuron subtypes in the basal ganglia underlie cognitive and emotional dysfunction.

PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in autoimmunity

DNA polymorphisms in the locus family with sequence similarity 167 member A-B lymphocyte kinase (FAM167A-BLK) are associated with several immune-mediated disease including Kawasaki disease, Sjögren’s syndrome and SLE. BLK is a kinase acting downstream of the B cell receptor, while the function of the FAM167A gene is unknown. This gene, and the additional member of the gene family, FAM167B, encode the proteins DIORA1 and 2, respectively. The goal of this PhD project is to understand the cellular function of DIORA2 by identifying proteins it interacts with and analysing how genetically altered expression levels affects the phenotype at the cellular and whole organism level. [NP1] The project includes establishing novel cell lines for BioID, analysis of murine and human primary cells with genetically determined high or low expression of DIORA2 by immunological and biochemical assays. Large scale expression data are obtained from single cell RNA sequencing. The student will be expected, under supervision, to obtain broad knowledge and systematic understanding of the research field and specialized knowledge in the project area, to become familiar with research methodology in general and the methods specific to the project, to acquire the capacity for scholarly analysis and synthesis, as well as to review and assess new and complex phenomena autonomously and critically. The student should also make an important contribution to the writing of scientific articles based on the project, and write a literature review of the research field ahead of the half-time review and thesis ahead of its defence.

Within our group we perform immunological research, and our focus is unconventional T cells, especially γδ T cells, as these immune cells have not so far been efficiently exploited. PhD position summary/title: Doctoral (PhD) student position in computational genetics of multiple sclerosis

MS is a lifelong neurological disease that strikes individuals, predominantly women, in their most productive years with varying progressive disability that affects all areas of life and includes physical disability, cognitive impairment and fatigue.  The overall aim of this PhD project is to identify genetic polymorphisms associated with severity and progression of MS as well as stratified patient populations where particular pathways are active and therefore potentially suited for more targeted treatment. The project also aims to identify biomarkers for these patient populations and MS severity. The long-term goal is to identify biological processes that control severity in MS, which will allow identification of target molecules for novel treatments of the progressive MS. Biomarkers that can identify who are at risk of developing severe disease will improve the use of current treatments.

Vi söker nu en doktorand till ett projekt om psykologisk trygghet i arbetsgrupper, ledarskap och arbetsmiljö. Psykologisk trygghet handlar om att det upplevs som tryggt att ta mellan-mänskliga risker i en grupp, d.v.s. en subjektiv upplevelse av en trygg arbetskontext där alla kan säga vad de tycker och tänker utan att vara rädda för negativa konsekvenser. Projektet kommer att studera kopplingen mellan psykologisk trygghet och arbetsmiljörelaterad säkerhet på arbetsplatser med höga säkerhetsrisker, såsom industri, lager och transport. Vårt team för translationell barncancerforskning är en del av avdelningen för Barnonkologi och Barnkirurgi på Institutionen för kvinnors och barns hälsa på Karolinska Institutet. Teamet leds av Dr Nikolas Herold som är teamledare i en del av en större forskargrupp ledd av professor Jan-Inge Henter.

Dr Herolds team fokuserar på att förbättra cancerbehandlingar genom att förstå hur cytostatika fungerar på molekylär- och cellnivå, för att kunna ta fram mer specifika och mindre toxiska behandlingar. Ett mål är att förstå varför patienter med samma diagnos svarar olika på samma behandling, i syfte att kunna hitta målinriktade behandlingar och minska risken för terapiresistens och återfall. Det övergripande målet är att ta kunskap från laboratoriet ända fram till kliniska prövningar och nya behandlingar.

The research group studies protein misfolding and amyloid structures related to neurodegenerative diseases, in particular Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease, and biomaterials. The working space is located in Neo, KI Campus South in Flemingsberg, at the Department of Biosciences and Nutrition. The group consists of one professor, two assistant professors, two senior scientists and five post-docs and PhD students.

About The Karolinska Institute, Sweden – Official Website

The Karolinska Institute sometimes known as the (Royal) Caroline Institute in English is a research-led medical university in Solna within the Stockholm urban area of Sweden. The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The assembly consists of fifty professors from various medical disciplines at the university. The current rector of Karolinska Institute is Ole Petter Ottersen, who took office in August 2017.

The Karolinska Institute was founded in 1810 on the island of Kungsholmen on the west side of Stockholm; the main campus was relocated decades later to Solna, just outside Stockholm. A second campus was established more recently in Flemingsberg, Huddinge, south of Stockholm.

The Karolinska Institute is Sweden’s third oldest medical school, after Uppsala University (founded in 1477) and Lund University (founded in 1666). It is one of Sweden’s largest centres for training and research, accounting for 30% of the medical training and more than 40% of all academic medical and life science research conducted in Sweden.

The Karolinska University Hospital, located in Solna and Huddinge, is associated with the university as a research and teaching hospital. Together they form an academic health science centre.
