PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Computational/Cognitive Neuroscience at the Predictive Brain Lab of the Donders Institute
As a PhD candidate you will use a computational approach to model and predict neural responses within the human visual system as well as behavioural performance, and test the neural and behavioural implications of different predictive neural architectures. The experimental and computational work will be conducted at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands). You will be supervised by a team of computational and cognitive neuroscientists with complementary expertise: Prof. Floris de Lange, Dr Micha Heilbron and Dr Lea-Maria Schmitt. You will be an active team member of the Predictive Brain Lab, a research group examining how the brain combines prior knowledge and incoming information to generate perceptual experience and make decisions.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Realising a just and effective energy transition in challenged neighbourhoods
The JUST PREPARE project is based on co-creation of approaches and solutions for the energy transition with a forward looking dimension. You will work together with municipalities, housing corporations, residents and other relevant actors. You will contribute to developing the necessary methodological and substantive knowledge on energy practices and collaboration in challenged neighbourhoods. This is done with four living labs in different municipalities (the cities of Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Nijmegen and the village of Gemert-Bakel). Your research will mainly focus on Nijmegen and Gemert-Bakel. The emphasis is on challenged households (sometimes labelled as underprivileged neighbourhoods), which are suffering from high energy prices, problematic access to solutions and lower degrees of involvement. This might lead to uneven distribution of costs and benefits and makes these households extra vulnerable in the process of the energy transition, while these households often experience a lack of agency regarding their own life and their lived environment.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Wetland Restoration and Management Trade-offs Between Biodiversity and Carbon Sequestration
Your PhD research will aim at identifying wetland-specific options for restoration that minimise trade-offs among carbon storage, biomass production, biodiversity, and water- or nutrient-related regulation ecosystem services. You will be working in the European Wet Horizons Research Consortium. Your primary goal is to quantify trade-offs between biodiversity, climate regulation and ecosystem services (biomass, water, nutrients) and potential abatements of trade-offs (e.g. water management, paludiculture). You will blend information on best restoration practices regarding management dilemmas and mitigation of trade-offs, using data collated from restoration projects, as well as new empirical data. You will conduct fieldwork at the project’s restoration sites collecting empirical data on biodiversity, carbon storage, GHG emissions, nutrient release and water quality. Working with interdisciplinary teams you will validate BioScore’s model with your own empirical data collected from field sites in the Netherlands, Germany, Poland and Denmark (and beyond). Your work will directly contribute to indicators (no-regret scores), which will be tailor-made to the needs of management agencies and stakeholders, helping them to identify options for large-scale restoration of wetlands, peatlands and floodplains that minimise trade-offs (using the SERVI-PEAT Decision Support Tool provided by the project partners). To amplify the impact of your PhD research, you will be given the opportunity to explore novel ideas and to break new ground in the field of wetland restoration and peatland rewetting.

We are looking for a PhD candidate to investigate how Dutch secondary schools currently select and use digital technologies, and how they can be assisted in safeguarding these values and norms in their decisions through organisational and technical interventions. To this end, a mixed-methods approach is foreseen including interviews, literature analysis, surveys and choice experiments. The project will combine the disciplinary perspectives of ethics, law, social sciences and design science in studying how ethical, technical and legal factors translate into organisational responsibilities around technology selection and use.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Neurocognitive Mechanism Underlying Social Interaction Effects on Infant Attention at the Donders Centre for Cognition
This PhD project focuses on the question of how social interaction early in life can shape infants’ attention development. We will use a unique combination of methods such as looking measures, motion-tracking, infant EEG, and computational modelling to better understand infant-caregiver interactions and their role for infants’ attention. As PhD candidate you will use a combined cognitive (neuro-)science and developmental science approach and implement techniques such as infant EEG, computational modelling, and motion-tracking to address your research questions. The experimental work will be conducted at the Baby and Child Research Center (BRC) and Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour at Radboud University (Nijmegen, Netherlands). You will be supervised by a team of scientists with complementary expertise: Dr Marlene Meyer (developmental cognitive neuroscience, main supervisor), Prof Sabine Hunnius (developmental psychology), Prof Judith Holler (multimodal communication and social interaction), Dr Max Hinne (computational modelling, artificial intelligence) and external collaborator Prof Sam Wass (attention development). You will be an active team member of the BabyBRAIN lab, a research group examining the developmental mechanisms and neurocognitive changes underlying early social and cognitive development.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: GIS Analysis and Spatial Modelling of Urban Heat, Health and Ecosystem Disservices
As a successful PhD candidate, you will be expected to analyse and model the effect of built environment characteristics on the indoor and outdoor climate in relation to heat stress for vulnerable groups, water quality and plant pollen diversity using vulnerability mapping and spatial modelling. This will enable you to monitor and predict the positive (i.e. services) and negative (i.e. disservices) effects of blue and green interventions. The project called ‘Development and Teaching of Literacy for Children with Complex Communication Needs’ is aimed at gaining insight into the process of literacy development and teaching for children and teenagers who are non-speaking. Most of them have multiple developmental disabilities (any combination of intellectual, sensory, and / or motor disability) and rely on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC; e.g. manual signs, speech generating devices, body language, and graphic and tangible symbols). The aim of the project is to validate a measure of reading comprehension in primary school children in which the outcome of the reading process, the situation model, is assessed. PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Glycobiology and Biomolecular Chemistry
The Biomolecular Chemistry Department is looking for a PhD candidate to decode and rewrite the biological information conveyed by glycans. The focus will be on understanding and directing glycan interactions in the immune system and with the intestinal microbiome. As a PhD candidate, you will develop novel tools to read the biological information of glycans and apply CRISPR-based gene editing to rewrite this information in human cell systems. You will develop glycoengineered cells and use them as ‘mini factories’ for the production of custom-designed glycans and glycoproteins and study their effects on immune and microbiome interactions. To this end, you will apply molecular biology and biochemistry techniques and develop novel types of glycan binding assays. Ultimately, your research will be applied to restore healthy interactions with glycan-binding receptors in the immune system and microbiome in the context of inflammation and autoimmunity.
