PhD position summary/title: PhD Student in Microanalysis of Magnesium Biocorrosion
The performance, durability and sustainability of engineering materials, as applied in e.g. medical technologies and related sensing devices, critically depend on the (electro)chemical reactivity and passivation (surficial oxide formation) of the metal or alloy surface in its service environment. Within the frame of an FWF-SNF lead agency international collaboration, doctoral positions at Empa and at the Medical university of Graz in Austria will investigate Mg alloy biodegradation processes. To obtain a full understanding of the degradation mechanisms, the scientific challenge is to mimic with advanced in vitro methodologies, the environment-dependent (in contact with bone or tissues) in vivo degradation. For this purpose, the PhD students in Graz will gather information on in vivo implant corrosion and physiological parameters near the implant.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. position titled: Digital twins for human exposure in the heat
Thermal environment management due to global warming, particularly heat stress, is growing in importance and poses a substantial risk to workers and general population worldwide. Therefore, detecting conditions resulting in heat stress is essential to become aware of the problem and take early mitigation measures to help prevent heat-related illness and maintain productivity. Thermal manikins or individual monitoring solutions coupled with sophisticated virtual models offer tools to predict human response in advance and recommend efficient mitigation measures before occurrence of the risk. In addition, validated dedicated models can serve as optimization tools for work environment, work organization, and protective clothing and equipment.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. position on Post-Tensioned/Prestressed 3D Printed Concrete Slabs
In this Ph.D. project, an advanced floor slab system consisting of post-tensioned 3D printed concrete formwork and cast-in-place reinforced concrete topping will be developed. The project aims to use 3D printed concrete as permanent formwork for slabs in place of conventional temporary formwork made up of timber or steel. The 3D printed concrete will be post-tensioned using BBR cables to improve the structural performance of the formwork. In addition, topology optimization tools will be implemented to optimize the geometry of the formwork to manufacture slabs with free-form geometries.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Position in Engineering of metal-polymer interfaces via atomic and molecular layer deposition for flexible applications
Thin films on polymers are omnipresent, from crisp packets to flexible electronics and satellite insulation. Yet restrictions in well-adhering coating-substrate combinations hinder the development of implantable medical devices, whilst crucial high-tech devices suffer from cracking and delamination, and non-recyclable large volume applications add to the growing threat of plastic pollution. Fundamentally, the metal-polymer interface complexly governs a materials’ ability to prevent cracking and remain functional when bent or stretched in use – and also offers widely unexplored mechanisms to tackle sustainability issues caused by the inseparability of metallization and substrate. This project follows an experimental approach, supported by theoretical calculations in specific aspects, to achieve a breakthrough in understanding and tailoring of interlinked interfacial-mechanical properties. The experimental approach comprises the purposeful modification of metal-polymer interfaces via artificial interlayers using a novel combined atomic/molecular layer and physical vapor deposition process. The resulting interfacial and mechanical properties will be studied as a function of interlayer thickness and chemistries, aiming at adhesion promotion without embrittlement and the potential to trigger delamination in post-application conditions.

PhD position summary/title: Ph.D. Student on Skin Phantoms Designs and Fabrication
In this project, we will focus on the design and fabrication of an artificial skin model, a skin model mimicking the thermal and optical properties of the human skin. This model will be based on a multilayered / multimaterials model divided into two layers mimicking the epidermis and dermis. A secondary objective will be to use this model to investigate the behavior of photothermal particles by means of inclusions implementation. Selected photothermal particles (PTP) will be introduced into the human skin by inclusion technology. The introduction of PTP under the shape of liquid droplets will simulate their accumulation into the hair bulbs. A local change in temperature will be triggered and simulate the possibility to destroy the hair bulbs by local heating.Such skin models can be envisaged for testing and validating an innovative permanent hair removal technology.
