PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate for Responsible Innovation: Developing New Products through Privacy by Design
The research you will conduct for your PhD thesis concerns ‘Responsible innovation through privacy design patterns’. Firms are increasingly using big data opportunities to develop digital innovations, which creates privacy issues due to the use of personal data. Engaging in responsible innovation, these firms struggle with paradoxical privacy tensions during their innovation activities such as the changing nature of privacy preferences, regulatory changes to privacy laws and integrating a multiplicity of actor perspectives. Also, privacy goals may conflict with other priorities such as incorporating value-added features and environmental sustainability in the design of new products. ICT research has developed privacy by design patterns and tested some of them in software development of digital systems. However, their insights are largely unconnected to innovation management research that investigates the use and impact of big data opportunities. This project aims to combine these research streams to understand how embedding privacy design patterns in innovation development can help innovation researchers and R&D managers to better define privacy issues, and design and deploy better privacy solutions in digital, responsible innovations, thereby improving the privacy protection of all the stakeholders involved.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Rebel-to-State Transition in Civil War
The project aims to study the role of commanders in civil war and post-civil war settlements through the lens of rebel-to-state transition. The PI will investigate rebel-to-state transition in the context of Afghanistan, which provides a unique look at Islamist rebel victory. As a PhD candidate, you will conduct a small (n = 3-4), qualitative, comparative analysis of rebel -to-state transition by non-Islamist groups. The cases to be investigated will be determined, in cooperation between you and the PI, based on similarities and differences between them. Cases that will be considered include the Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF) in Rwanda, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) in South Sudan, the Sandinista National Liberation Front (SNLF) in Nicaragua, the National Patriotic Liberation Front (NPF) in Liberia, or the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) in Kosovo. Focusing on non-Islamist rebel victories will also allow the team (you, the PI and, later on, a postdoctoral researcher) to leverage the ideological (in particular Islamist) variable, and measure its impact on state-building outcomes (as compared to other variables and other ideologies).

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Cohesive Climate Adaptation Measures in Dutch Rural Regions
As a PhD Candidate you will develop and apply a framework to assess the societal impacts of climate adaptation measures addressing future impacts on human and ecosystem health in connection with other transition challenges. This assessment framework will build on the Natural Capital Model, which scales from local to national scale through a consistent set of cost-benefit models addressing both economic and ecosystem services. This framework will be extended given regional challenges, measures and stakeholder needs, searching for a more optimal set of measures with specific attention to vulnerable people and ecosystems. This novel framework will be applied with stakeholders in selected regions to determine an appropriate set of climate adaptation measures and novel solutions to tackle future impacts of climate change. PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate in Theoretical and Computational Condensed Matter Physics
Our main research interest is to understand the dynamics of magnetism at the shortest length and time scales, for which existing methods fail to give an adequate description. We exploit and develop both phenomenological theory and new computational methods inspired from machine learning. We apply these methods to access otherwise inaccessible regimes of magnetism and provide explanations and predictions for state-of-the-art time-resolved optical and X-ray experiments. Ultimately, our research aims to disclose new scenarios for ultrafast, ultrasmall and minimally dissipative switching of magnetism. Although fundamental in nature, our research may, in the long term, enable applications in data storage and processing that are much more energy-efficient than possible today.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Candidate: Historical Representations of Diversity, Race, and ‘Dutchness’ in Sport, 1950s-Present
The PhD project forms the historical component of a work package on diversity in sport entitled Arenas of Belonging: Sport Heroes as Models of Aspiration, Inspiration, and Participation, 1950-Present. It focuses on the way in which sport successes have contributed to a sense of belonging in an increasingly diverse Dutch society, and how transatlantic entanglements with the Dutch Caribbean have played a role in constructions of race and diversity. It addresses how dominant assumptions about sport had integrative power, but also damaged, stereotyped and “blackened” athletes. Such popular representations created a new racial archetype of “the natural black athlete” that reproduced colonial myths or caused a “brawn drain” in the countries of origin. The PhD project will collaborate with a postdoctoral project that employs digital humanities methodologies to analyse tropes of inclusion and belonging in historical periodicals (such as Delpher). The outcomes of continuities/discontinuities of such tropes and stereotypes will be connected to outcomes of the second part of the work package that focuses on Present Heroes: Sporting role models and mediated meaning making amongst urban adolescents.

The Department of Mathematics at Radboud University is seeking an outstanding and highly motivated PhD candidate to develop statistical methods for omics datasets. Omics research has the potential to unravel biological mechanisms underlying human diseases. Ongoing technological advances deliver diverse omics datasets and their analysis requires novel methods. Developing these methods using multivariate analyses techniques such as functional principal component analysis and partial least squares is the topic of this project.
