PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in Modelling of Interfaces in Solar Cells and Tunnel Field-Effect Transistors

Searches for materials with specific properties are the bottlenecks of many emerging semiconductor technologies, such as quantum computing, electronics and solar energy conversion. Properties matching a desired function are key to the introduction of new technologies, but as development approaches final implementation, all components need to be tuned for a harmonious coexistence within a micro-device via doping, surface functionalization, nano-scale engineering, or other methods. From the point of view of first-principles modeling, a microdevice is a stack of functional layers (1, 2 or 3D, organic or inorganic), separated by interfaces – i.e. volumes within which the proximity or bonding between two neighboring materials influences the properties, and causes a deviation from the bulk state. The present project will focus on modeling of interfaces in solar devices and tunnel field-effect transistors at realistic conditions (with defects, extra charges and at finite temperatures. Advanced electronic structure methods, hybrid functionals and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations, as implemented in the ABINIT, QuantumEspresso or CP2K codes, will be used.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in single particle catalysis in nanofluidic systems

The focus of this PhD position in the framework of an ERC Consolidator Grant is to further push our nanofluidics approach to single particle catalysis to the sub-10 nm particle size regime by implementing and applying a revolutionizing optical microscopy concept that we recently have discovered. It relies on the fascinating optical properties of nanofluidic structures when they interact with visible light. The topic of this PhD project thus lies at the interface between surface chemistry and catalysis, nanofluidics and nanooptics.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in charging and trip planning of electric vehicles

In this project, we will develop intelligent trip planning system for electric vehicles that will replace currently available navigators in production vehicles. The novel system will incorporate information shared with other vehicles and predictive information on power availability of chargers along the route, in order to optimally manage charging from both the vehicular and infrastructure perspective. Such a holistic perspective on intelligent trip planning has not been studied previously and the hypothesis is that a holistic approach is necessary to avoid queues at some charging stations and underutilization of other stations, while minimizing travel time and energy consumption for the individual electric vehicle user. We will develop stochastic models on the anticipated distribution of charging cost, power availability, waiting time and overstay cost at charging facilities. Advanced optimization techniques will be developed to answer the hypothesis, and the results will be demonstrated on a prototype vehicle, to prove its feasibility and take initial steps in technology development.

PhD position summary/title: PhD Student Position in Machine Learning: Causality & Efficiency

Machine learning is now an essential tool for scientists and engineers. It is used in diverse applications to predict outcomes from inputs by training models to minimize prediction error in training data. As widespread adoption reaches beyond research and the developers of such systems, the seams have started to show in this attractively simple idea. State-of-the-art models which achieve top accuracy on benchmark tasks fail to generalize to new examples and to highly related problem domains. In this project, we will study the combination of causal inference and learning using auxiliary information to improve the efficiency and domain robustness of learning algorithms.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student position in sustainable mobility systems

The greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions from the transport sector take up approximately a quarter of global GHG emissions and are still rising. Traffic congestions and safety have been two of main causes for economic losses and causality worldwide. To facilitate the fast transition to emission-free, more efficient and safer transportation systems, the world has witnessed significant advances in emerging transport technologies such as transportation electrification, shared mobility and connected automated vehicles. These emerging technologies are promising panacea to renovate current mobility systems and significantly contribute to transition to more sustainable mobility systems. However, these new techniques bring not only opportunities but also challenges. There are many theoretical, technical and practical issues that need to be addressed to put these new technologies or techniques to good use. To name a few, transportation electrification needs large scale deployment of charging facilities and re-design of some transport systems (e.g., the scheduling of buses); the adoption rate of electric vehicles is not high due to vehicle and infrastructure limitations; the environmental benefits of electric vehicles may not be positive if the electricity is mainly from thermal power in some regions and utilization rate is low; shared mobility such as car-sharing and on-demand ride-hailing may result in more usage of passenger cars instead of public transits, and need better operation management and system optimization; connected automation encounters a set of dilemma in mixed traffic with both human-driven vehicle and automated vehicles.

Chalmers University of Technology  is a Swedish university located in Gothenburg that focuses on research and education in technology, natural sciences, architecture, mathematics, maritime and other management areas.
The university was founded in 1829 following a donation by William Chalmers, a director of the Swedish East India Company. He donated part of his fortune for the establishment of an “industrial school”. Chalmers was run as a private institution until 1937, when the institute became a state-owned university. In 1994, the school was incorporated as an aktiebolag under the control of the Swedish Government, the faculty and the Student Union. Chalmers is one of only three universities in Sweden which are named after a person, the other two being Karolinska Institutet and Linnaeus University.
