PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Materials Chemistry

Biopolymer nanofibres play an important role in the construction of biological systems, where they contribute with mechanical and other physical properties. Fibres can be constructed from proteins, as in amyloids, or polysaccharides, such as cellulose and chitin. Their properties will be defined by the structures ranging from the mesoscale to the atomic level and it is hence of utmost importance to develop techniques to study their structures. Electron microscopy and electron diffraction have evolved over the last years into a new era. Cryo-EM was awarded the Nobel Prize in 2017 for studies of protein structures and methods for 3D electron diffraction have pushed the limits of atomic structure determination into the nanoworld.

In this project, we will utilize emerging opportunities for the rapid collection of electron diffraction data using transmission electron microscopy, called scanning electron diffraction and three-dimensional electron diffraction. These techniques are opening up for studies of electron beam-sensitive specimens, such as biopolymers and proteins, at the nanoscale.

The project will focus on the development of protocols for data collection and data analysis as well as the interpretation and utilization of the resulting data to understand the atomic arrangement and how this knowledge can aid the understanding of the properties of the biomaterials and how they can be used in the development of devices. The technique will generate large amounts of data and hence protocols for the analysis of big data will be necessary.

(06) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in sustainable biomedical devices

Transient technologies aim to ensure that all device components degrade after the intended use into non-toxic and even biologically friendly products. Key challenges are to develop materials that combine compatibility with fabrication processes, stable performance in environmental and/or physiological conditions (humidity, temperature, etc.), and safe biodegradation into non-toxic products. The project aims to develop organic bioelectronic devices that combine the properties needed for efficient function with a route for biodegradation in biological environments. The work is highly interdisciplinary, including materials development, device fabrication, and evaluation. It will address several research challenges, from fabrication of biomedical devices using degradable components to device operation for the timeframe required by the application, and materials degradation at physiological conditions after the device lifecycle.

(10) PhD Degree – Fully Funded

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Environmental Science focusing on Atmospheric Chemistry of Air Pollutants

The Department of Environmental Science invites applications for a four-year PhD position associated with the VR-funded project “Brake wear emissions – a hidden source of volatile organic compounds and secondary particles”. Road traffic is one of the main sources of urban air pollution. Unlike exhaust emissions, non-exhaust emissions from road traffic, such as brake wear, are still unregulated and therefore now often exceed exhaust emissions. While particles directly emitted from the braking process have already been studied in detail, only little is known about the gaseous emissions and their fate in the atmosphere.

The successful candidate will use different state-of-the-art on-line mass spectrometry techniques to understand the composition and atmospheric fate of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from the braking process. The project aims to first identify and quantify VOC emissions from simulated brake wear using authentic brake materials in a laboratory setup.  As a second step, the candidate will use an oxidation flow reactor to simulate atmospheric chemistry and thereby determine whether the emitted gases can lead to the formation of secondary particles.

Deadline : 31 January 2024.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Environmental Science focusing on greenhouse gas emissions from subsea permafrost

Subsea permafrost formed by flooding of land permafrost in the early Holocene, and now extends over large areas under the Arctic Ocean. High concentrations of methane have been observed in water above subsea permafrost and might be related to subsea permafrost thaw through several mechanisms: Subsea permafrost might act as a lid on methane deposits below or within (including thermogenic gas deposits and methane hydrates), and its thaw might open pathways for gas transport to the water and the atmosphere. Methane can also be freshly produced by microbial organic matter decomposition in thawing subsea permafrost. On the other hand, microbial methane oxidation in subsea permafrost can remove methane before it reaches the water column. Our current understanding of subsea permafrost, its extent, thaw rates, the organic matter and microorganisms within, and its relationship to the high methane concentrations above is very limited, since observation-based data are rare.

PhD position summary/title: PhD student in Environmental Science focusing on sea spray aerosol transport of PFAAs

Evidence has emerged that levels of perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) are elevated in coastal regions despite there being no obvious sources. In previous research, we have demonstrated that PFAAs emitted on sea spray aerosols (SSA) is an important source of PFAAs to air. It remains uncertain, however, what the contribution of SSA transport is to atmospheric deposition of PFAAs to land. While modelling of transport and deposition undertaken in our research group indicates the importance of SAA transport and deposition of PFAAs in coastal regions, there is currently little empirical evidence for these impacts. In this project, we aim to demonstrate that coastal zones in Denmark and Sweden are impacted by PFAAs through short-range transport and deposition of relatively large SSA particles with short atmospheric lifetimes. In this project, the student will:

  • Measure PFAAs in air on the Danish and Swedish coasts using high-volume air samplers and correlate PFAA air concentrations to SSA tracer ions measured in the same samples
  • Measure PFAAs in different aerosol size fractions near the coast using a cascade impactor
  • Measure wet and dry deposition of PFAAs using an automatic wet/dry deposition sampler, as well as levels of PFAAs in surface environmental media along a gradient from the sea inland, and
  • Model SSA emission in the surf zone and SSA transport and deposition to land to explain our empirical data.
