Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Human Computer Interaction

Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh is seeking candidates for a Research Associate in Human Computer Interaction who will support the work of the funded EPSRC (£3.4M) project Protecting Minority Ethnic Communities Online (PRIME). The PRIME project aims to broaden understanding of online harm and how it can be mitigated through new systems, tools and processes by focusing on Minority Ethnic (ME) communities’ experiences of digitalised services, particularly in the areas of housing, health and energy. We will draw on knowledge, methods and skills from social policy, cyber security and privacy, data mining and machine learning; human computer interaction, applied linguistics and educational technology. Working closely with National Research Centre on Privacy, Harm Reduction and Adversarial Influence online (REPHRAIN (https://www.rephrain.ac.uk) the PRIME consortium includes researchers from Heriot-Watt, Glasgow, York, Cranfield, and Open Universities, and it will engage with a wide range of individuals from ME communities, community organisations, public agencies and energy suppliers to identify and categorise the nature of the harms experienced, and assess the adequacy of existing systems and processes to counter them. In the first instance, we will translate this knowledge into the co-design and co-production of novel, effective and scalable social and technological harm-mitigating solutions through a Citizen-led Race Equity Living Lab (CREL).

(05) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Warehouse Operations

Warehouses play a critical role in the supply chain acting as the decoupling point where forecast meets demand. Therefore, warehouses are the strategic location of buffer inventory, the point where supplier flows merge, and customer flows are consolidated. The role of the warehouse in the supply chain means their operations are designed and sequenced to support transport operations which reflect customer expectations. Transport arrangements often span organisational boundaries and are therefore more difficult to coordinate and manage.

(12) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate – Cold Chain

We are looking to appoint a Research Associate (Full-time or Part-time) to join the biggest international research team at Heriot-Watt University and Centre for Sustainable Cooling working in the UK and internationally (e.g., ACES: Africa Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Cooling and Cold-Chain).

The food and drink industry is the largest manufacturing sector in the UK that responsible for 176 MtCO2e emissions (excludes, inter alia, pre-farm production, packaging, food waste, land use change). Food refrigeration is estimated to be responsible for 2-4% of the UKs total GHG emissions. Food security is an integrated global issue and requires cold-chains. Conventional cold-chains for food are energy intensive and use refrigerants often have high global warming potentials (GWPs). Zero-Emission Cold-Chain (ZECC) aims to develop and deliver a clear industry-led pathway to achieve the UK’s net zero 2050 target whilst maintaining food security and affordability for UK consumers and economic opportunity for the UK food industry: https://gtr.ukri.org/projects?ref=EP%2FV042548%2F1

(14) Postdoctoral Fellowship Position

Postdoc Fellowship Position summary/title: Research Associate in Materials Science

Through this 24 month industrially-focussed research project, ENVIROPET in collaboration with Heriot-Watt University (HWU) are developing a ground-breaking technology, which aims to enable inclusion of a minimum 30% rPET addition to bottle-grade PET. An additional target will be the ability to include up to 20% washed and unprocessed PET-flake without losing the mechanical and optical properties of the PET-bottle. The technology to be developed by HWU will focus on the use of liquid processing additives (LPAs) as a method to achieve homogenization of rPET with PET-flake feedstocks without any concomitant loss in either processing (i.e. viscosity) behaviour or final properties (mechanical and gas permeation). The research will explore how LPAs affect the mechanical, thermal, optical and barrier properties of PET-rPET blends via extensive testing and characterisation. Spectroscopic characterisation will be co-supervised by Prof Martin McCoustra, an experienced surface scientist with expertise in IR, optical and surface spectroscopic techniques.

About Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom – Official Website

Heriot-Watt University (Scottish Gaelic: Oilthigh Heriot-Watt) is a public research university based in Edinburgh, Scotland. It was established in 1821 as the School of Arts of Edinburgh, the world’s first mechanics’ institute, and subsequently granted university status by royal charter in 1966. It is the eighth oldest higher education institute in UK. The name Heriot-Watt was taken from Scottish inventor James Watt and Scottish philanthropist and goldsmith George Heriot.

Known for its focus on science and engineering, it is one of the 39 old universities in the UK comprising the second cluster of elite universities after Oxbridge.

Heriot-Watt was established as the School of Arts of Edinburgh by Scottish businessman Leonard Horner on 16 October 1821. Having been inspired by Anderson’s College in Glasgow, Horner established the School to provide practical knowledge of science and technology to Edinburgh’s working men. The institution was initially of modest size, giving lectures two nights a week in rented rooms and boasting a small library of around 500 technical works. It was also oversubscribed, with admissions soon closing despite the cost of 15 shillings for a year’s access to lectures and the library.

The School was managed by a board of eighteen directors and primarily funded by sponsors from the middle and upper classes including Robert Stevenson and Walter Scott. It first became associated with the inventor and engineer James Watt in 1824, as a means of raising funds to secure permanent accommodation. Justifying the association, School Director Lord Cockburn said:
